Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants Kicks Off the Lunar New Year’s Day Box Office and Starts with Expected Two Extremes of Reviews — 27 Comments

  1. I’m sorry but what are you taking about. Legend of the Condor Heroes did NOT top the lunar new years day box office. It didn’t even come close to doing that. It came in 4th. Ne Zha 2 top the box office followed by Detective Chinatown and then Creation of the Gods 2 in 3rd.

    • @rivel …did Koala changed the headline cause as of right now nothing in it or in her write up say that the movie topped the box office?

    • I changed it as it clearly led readers thinking I was implying it was top earning at the box office after actual receipts, I just meant it topped the exciting lineup of movies opening lunar new year day, since it had the highest presales.

  3. At this point shouldn’t guo jing stop being earnest and is a bit jaded? I thought this was major box office hit breaking records?

  4. Not a fan of Xiao Zhan or Zhuang Dafei, as well as Tsui Hark (though I respect him). But I think it’s quite admirable to be able to compete with the 3 mega IPs (Nezha, Creation of the Gods & Detective Chinatown) in a packed CNY. Their fans should celebrate it.

On the other hand, Liu Haoran cements his reputation as one of the most bankable young actors in China.

    • The IP is running because of Wang Baoqiang not Liu Haoran. Will anyone watch the movie if WB is not in it? All other liu haoran projects have been less than successful. Yi Yangxi is more bankable I think.

      • Both LHR and YYQX movies mostly as supporting actors to senior actors, not the lead actors. Their movies as ML did not get as good results. YYQX movie only grossed 700 M last month.
So the young bankable actors will continue to play supporting roles to senior actors?

    • How come all the so called “bankable young actors” are capital backed and playing supporting roles to senior actors? At least Xiao Zhan’s dramas and movies are all 1st billing and not dependent on seniors carrying everything.

  5. Maybe I am in a bubble, but the reviews are not good for this. Criticisms seem valid. It’s a Wuxia movie but none of the punches landed. Fight scenes were like fantasy, just CGI color waves. Huang Rong is a miscast. XZ frowned lots. His tan is indeed bad. BGM constant and loud. The Mongolian dubbing doesn’t match in tone of voice and lip movements.Plot and rhythm are not smooth. At the current rate, it is unlikely to recoup its costs.

    Hua Zheng was good.

    • Yes, you are in a bubble. Try to find reviews of people that really watched and not get influenced by the basic black drafts spread by the concurrence.

    • you are indeed in a dark ball..the general audience’s reception is really positive and it’s full of enthusiastic and articulate reviews, the reputation of the movie is really good and it’s exactly the reason why competitors have risen an heavy black campaign to smear the movie and downrate it. Every person who posts honest and positive reviews have been attacked in these days.

    • You’re being misled by anti narrative. Passers-by reviews are positive and mostly coming from Jin Yong fans. Viewers in cinemas cover diverse age demographics and not just fans, many literary bloggers and movie bloggers posted glowing reviews of the movie. Even mainstream media supported the movie because of its positive message and quality.

  6. Legend of The Condor Heroes has cemented its self as one of the top grossing films in box office presales history coming in at #5 on the all time list. Despite competing against capital backed films and having its screen availability only at 6% compared to everyone else’s 20% to 30% it will soon become the highest grossing Wuxia film of all time thanks to rave reviews and strong word of mouth. Congratulations to the cast and crew for all the rave reviews that propelled it to a Weibo rating of 9.6 out of 10. I can’t wait to watch this amazing film overseas when it is broadcasted in USA come February.

  7. I’m really anticipating this movie as a fan of Tsui Hark’s filmography
I’m waiting for the release in my country at the end of the month to watch it.
Because im super excited, I’m spending the last days reading passerby reviews on xhs (i avoid weibo, it’s too full of fandoms, black, fandoms wars In general) and so many people have watched it and are enthusiastics. Unfortunately, after one day from the release, i noticed that black armies came on xhs too and are attacking basically every one who speaks about the movie 😔 passerby are really pissed, competitors want to destroy the movie and they are using such mean ways. This is so sad to see, arts should never been treated like this, chinese entertainment world iis so dirty! In addition i also read, that the movie is heavily suppressed into its broadcast, squeezed in only 6% of total screenings and in bad hours, anyway i watched many photos on xhs and halls were well packed of people of any age and gender. This is good, nostalgic for older, stimulating for younger. Anyway, even if the suppression, i read it had record presale and it’s going to set historical record box office for a wuxia movie. What a pity, i wonder what it would had been without this suppression 😔
I watched all the trailers and everything looks really grant! I also liked really much the cast. Guo Jing looks amazing (i agree with you about tan make up, it’s the only thing that disturbs me) and acting looks really great, female characters looks really good, I’m especially fascinated by the Mongolian princess, and i love the Western Poisonous characterization.
I noticed chemistry is really good between the 2 leads, i loved the scene when guo jing recognized hua rong.
For sure i will have a better evaluation when i’ll watch it, but reviews let me enthusiastic

  8. Legend of the Condor Heroes received great reviews from the general audience who watched the movie, Jin Yong fans, movie critics, education bloggers, and is heavily supported by state media. The director and actor did a round table interview with respected figures Dou Wentao and Wen Jun about the movie and it was highly praised by viewers for the literary discussions.

The pre-sale of the movie broke record and it’s now #5 in all-time pre-sale box office list with the least number of screenings withstanding blatant capitalists’ suppressions. It will soon release overseas by Sony Pictures, wuxia fans are very excited.

  9. I’m not really a fan of Xiao Zhan, but I’ve noticed that whenever he releases a new project, there are always two extreme sides, some praising it endlessly while antis nitpick everything. There seem to be a lot of black drafts circulating, but at the same time, I’ve also seen plenty of positive word-of-mouth on Weibo and Douyin. Rather than getting caught up in all the noise, I’d rather watch it myself and form my own opinion as a general audience. After all, everyone has different tastes in movies, and what works for one person might not work for another.

  10. I have absolutely zero context for this story, so I’m going based off vibes alone, and this movie has been looking boring as heck since they started promoting. I’ve never been a fan of XZ, so I don’t care anyways, but he looks like he’s underperforming hard, based off this trailer where we actually watch characters exchange dialogue (not that it’s even his voice). I get why China does dubbing, but man, it’s hard to measure talent when performers don’t actually deliver dialogue, and yes, I’m speaking broadly because I, myself, can’t tell if line delivery for Chinese actors/actresses is good or not anyways. For me (and with English speaking acting), I always feel like a performer’s tone of voice and all the inflections and emotions that go into line delivery kicks an actor over into the elite category, so I always question if Chinese actors and actresses are actually good. I find drama reviewers who are native speakers to tell me! Haha. Anywayyyys, hope XZ chooses good dramas next because I don’t feel like his acting presence is large enough to carry movies 🤷‍♂️

    • Huh? I have seen many nonsense things about Xiao Zhan but this is probably one of the most misinformed comments of all time.
Your comment is weird cause Xiao Zhan never uses dubbing. He even learned Mongolian for this adaptation. And actually his lines and voice acting is what sets him apart from other young actors in China, who often get complaints about not being able to enunciate.
He also get frequently invited to translate different programs in China. So you must be confusing him with someone else

    • “Going based off vibes alone,” tells me allll I need to know about you and your ridiculous comment. Saying Xiao Zhan doesn’t have the acting chops to carry anything when he has been carrying everting in his career since The Untamed is hilarious. CCTV the most coveted national tv station has been broadcasting his dramas non-stop for 2 years now. Jade Dynasty the 1st movie he made was a massive hit making 30x its budget and becoming the autumn festival winner and still holding the record for it. And now Condor Heroes is top 2 for the largest box office of a Wuxia film of all time. It’s better to keep “opinions” to yourself if the only thing you have to back them up are your “vibes.” Lol

    • @lu, this is just your personal “feeling” and preference, not even a review of an actor or a drama cuz you didn’t even watch it. Besides, you got it all wrong regarding dubbing. XZ is one of very few popular Chinese actors (aka liuliang in Chinese) who dubbed his own voice. He performed stage play Dream like a Dream for three years straight, which is Shakespeare equivalent in China. He had to recite the lines on stage facing actual (not virtual LOL) audience for 8 hours on each stage presentation. How could he do that if he’s not competent with his lines?

This is not the first time you opined with negativity and doubt about XZ. That’s fine. But at least, you should look up some accurate information about him before sharing your points.

    • Lol, I’m open non-fan. I think he’s stronger in his contemporary works vs historical because he looks more comfortable. I think everyone loves him from “The Untamed”, and I’m happy for all of you who stand by or fight for him 🫡✊, I’ve just never enjoyed any production with him in it completely, and I’m still waiting for it. As objectively as possible, this movie looks over and underdone at the same time, not even due to XZ. I’ll go vibes any day over a pretentious money grab. None of you are thinking, “This is all this movie has to offer??” 🤷🏻‍♂️

  11. Jin Yong fans and wuxia fans seems to be loving this adaptation!
So I can’t wait to see it soon. It must be nice finally not having a stupid Guo Jing lol
