tvN Weekend Drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Ends with 17.107% High Ratings and a Happy Ending for the Viewers
The tale of a modern Michelin starred chef and her tyrant gourmet counissoeur in sageuk K-drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty wrapped its incredibly successful run this weekend, with the final episode getting 17.107% and making it the 7th highest rated drama in tvN history. It now sits right under another time-traveling to Joseon era chef K-drama in Queen Cheorin (Mr. Queen) with is number 6, so maybe make more of these dramas lol. I’m kidding, please don’t milk the concept and genre, ultimate what makes a successful K-drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty had it all. Solid acting by leads Yoona and Lee Chae Min with great onscreen couple chemistry, well-written characters, engaging struggles with all the food competitions, and a political conspiracy to give it a grander scope. While K-dramas has had low viewership for years now but every time there is the rare hit these days I always think “If you build it, they will come”. It’s just that there are so few worth wanting K-dramas these days, not that viewers have abandoned the art form en masse permanently, and many are just waiting for ones like this that bring back all the good feels. Speaking of feels, the drama ending with a swirling happy end, the likes of which MAKE NO SENSE but the reaction from most viewers seem to be WHO CARES, WE HAPPY! with the ending haha. While this was a fantasy time-travel drama to begin with, at least the mechanics in the beginning seem to be there but it all went to rainbows and unicorns magic at the end with the King somehow in the modern era perfectly airdropped in and ready to live happily ever after with his chef. Too many time-travel dramas end with permanent despair (Bu Bu Jing Xin K-drama Scarlet Heart:Ryeo I’m talking to you) that a nice albeit how-it-happened-is- nonsensical happy ending is just fine with me.

I really liked this for the most part , but I lost interest in the end because the romance didn’t work for me. They had chemistry but there were not enough scenes to make me care if they found each other again.
I am a bit baffled by the ratings success. It was good, but not that good. But good for the cast and crew, as I am in the minority with my opinion.
Same, to me it feels like that last yoona drama with lee junho, good but I don’t think it’s unique enough for me to remember. I guess yoona has a pull on knetz, her drama consistently has high rating
I started watching this drama with zero expectations and I ended falling in love with the leads’ chemistry. The writing leaves much to be desired, especially that cop out ending, proving once again that k-drama writers still have a lot to learn in making good, unrushed endings. How did he adjust to the modern world? And unless I missed it, what happened to that Ming head chef that was secretly helping Joseon out, what was his motive? Lots of loopholes to an otherwise okay plot.
The real revelation for me was LCM and his amazing looks and acting skills. This is the first time I’ve ever watched him and woah. That boy has potential with his face, height, and talent! This was my favorite Yoona drama and IMO, the strongest chemistry she’s had with any of her male leads. I will definitely be re-watching the drama with focus on LCM and Yoona’s scenes!
The ending made no sense. The pacing was terrible towards the end. Classic kdrama issues. Pity. It was great to start and then deteriorated.
The first couple of episodes were interesting and well-paced, but the show quickly went downhill after the Ming convoy subplot. Yoona and Lee Chaemin look their actual age, so I was glad that romance was kept minimal. Overall, this one has zero rewatch value for me. Very surprised at the high ratings.
I think casting is so off in all the dramas these days. 25-year-olds are playing CEOs while 35-year-olds are playing school kids. Totally breaks the immersion. I am in a total kdrama slump. Feels like the Hallyu era is over.
They left out the most important part like how the heck he came from the past to present. Also some characters were reincarnated but no memories. It was a happy ending but I wanted more. I just wish the Asian writers from Korea and China can make these scenarios of time slip have a grand ending that is conclusive without a rushed ending like let us linger a little longer at their reunion. There will always be stereotypical outcomes with these genre dramas but this one has a better ending than most thus far.
I saw some “side stories” that explained more, from the original story …. he basically woke up in the right time, got into an accident immediately, recovered in hospital getting the hang of modern life, met the reincarnation of his best friend, found the FL and happy ending abounds!
I’m now more intrigued by C actor Yu Menglong’s death and possible political fallout. Besides the increasing attention from the international community including serious think tank like Foreign Policy to the infamous case, Kpop Stray Kids are more exciting to watch than all the drama now. LOL.
Am still checking this blog site from time to time to see anything fun. But not much TBH.
Love the leads. Perfect casting for me because they have chemistry and they acted well here. Solid! No surprise with the high ratings. Love the story even the ending because its FANTASY, helllloooo!!! It never pretended to be anything else. Nonsensical, what do you expect hehehe… Time Travel! Thanks, Koala!
