2013 Drama Reviews: A Year of Unexpected Dramas Both Real and Reel — 72 Comments

  1. 2013 was probably the worst drama year for me. I only watchend FBND, Cruel City, Cruel Palace and… well that’s it I think.

    Let’s hope for a better year 2014. 🙂

    • Miss Korea, You from Another Star and Prime Minister & I are all redeeming it for me. It would make more sense to lump them in with 2014 kdramas though

  2. I don’t know if you’d be interested but Mandate of Heaven (The Fugitive of Joseon) was really worth watching and that is not because of the main lead characters. In fact they were the most boring but the story moves on very fast and the side characters were very well written and are given enough screen time to shine!! Well I mean its just my feedback if you were interested 😉
Other than that thanks for the reviews throughout the year they were entertaining as ever I follow this blog on a daily basis!! Happy holidays 😉

  3. There wasn’t a single drama from 2013 that I actually liked from the beginning to the end or actually liked it enough to stalk it every week. Most of it got sooo predictable and boring after like the 4th episode…I hope it gets better in 2014. By the way, there was a mistake koala. It was supposed to NOTABLE HAPPENINGS in 2013, not 2012. XD

  4. My favorites from 2013:
Master’s Sun, Two Weeks, Dating Agency Cyrano, Incarnation Of Money, School 2013 and Heirs 🙂

Liked…I Hear Your Voice and FBND

Mixed feelings about Ad Genius Lee Tae Baek

Dropped Gu Family Book, MiRae’s Choice and YTBLSS.

  5. I loved Cruel City. Wished it was a little bit longer. Reply 1994 started out so good. I hear your voice was really good. Loved it from the beginning to the end. Lee bo young played the character well!! Farewell 2013.

  6. Captain Koala, longtime reader here (been following since M3), just wanted to say I <3×10^infinity AKP and will be here for as long as you keep on bending time. (Seriously, I don't know how you juggle family, career, life, and blog. Teach me please?) I initially started reading for the recaps but stayed for the opinions. Even if a recapped drama isn't one that I'm interested in or following, I'll always read your thoughts in the post. Your writing somehow manages to always hit that sweet spot between the exhilarated swooning of a fangirl and the cold-headed reasoning of a critic for me (sorry, can't explain it any better than that – suffice to say, it works for me!). Happy Holidays, and I'm going to tell Santa that you were a veeeeeeeeeery good girl this year and he better give you all the goodies you wanted under your tree or else someone may not be around for his job next year. <3!

    • I second everything V says. Well done on the year end review. Please tell us how you balance it all. Appreciate all the hard work you put into this blog. Happy New Year and may you find that perfect rom-com in 2014!

      Amy

(PS I really am enjoying the Prime Minister and I – fingers crossed it stays that way)

      • I second My2Girls seconding what V says!

Also that bit about Happy New Year, and hoping that Prime Minister and I continues to be a great rom-com. Because we really need at least one for 2013, right? 🙂

  7. Thanks for year end review. Some of the dramas I watched:
Love: IHYV, MS, School2013, FBND, monstar, still airing–reply1994, PrimeministerandI
Like: SHKeeper, gooddoctor, MTT, WAY?, heirs, still airing–belami, empresski

I’m hoping the next batch of dramas coming out soon have good storylines.

  8. Talking about crazy makjang daily dramas, I’m sure none can beat the weekly drama that is ending its 100-odd episode run soob called Princess Aurora. Utterly nonsensical storylines in which the writer randomly kills off lead characters (the actors themselves only know that they r being killed off last minute), that being devout and Buddhist can make a gay man go straight again, a cancer-riddled man being sympathetic to his cancer kills that he is killing off his cancer cells via treatment etc…..

  9. This year was pretty lackluster. I completed only Monstar and Scandal.

The ONLY reason I will be completing AM94 is I want to know how the writer will wrap up Chilbongie’s story. And, would like to thank AM94 only for Chilbongie and Yoo Yeon Seok.

  10. Soooo agree with Ms. Koala that couldn’t watch Secret ‘cuz scared by Hwang Jung Eum’s chopped-off face… She was soooo pretty and cute in Giant…

  11. 2013 was meh for me.
I didn’t watch any of the dramas which you have rated highly, so maybe it’s just me not picking the better ones.

The better dramas of 2013 for me were:
    1) GFB (only because of LSG)
    2) Master’s Sun (mainly for the sparkling chemistry between the OTP)
    3) IHYV (only for the brilliance of LBY, I didn’t feel a thing for the romance)
    4) MHIYD (frustrating for sure, but I kinda like that it is different, and LDG was major yum)

I need a rom-com like LTM to make me fall head over heels with it, I need a drama like the amazing TK2H that made me obssessed with it.
Let’s hope 2014 will be much better!

  12. Hi Koala, it’s a pity that you dropped Secret after the first episode – for me, the first episode was the worst of the series but the show just got better and better as it progressed. I think you gushed over the first episode of MHIYD, didn’t you? So for me at least, a lesson taught by Secret: don’t judge a drama by its first few episodes.

I’d never watched any of Hwang Jung Eum’s dramas before and am so glad I got to watch her awesome acting in Secret.

  13. I am just happy to see Jung Woo finally get some love. I know he has been around for awhile but I just remember him being a scene stealer in Youre the best Lee Soon Shin so I am glad that he is getting some mainstream love for his role as Trash in Reply 1994. I would say that in addition to Yoo Yun Seok , he is definitely a breakout star from that show based on all the domestic love he is getting for the role. For all of the duds this year, I will have to say 2013 is the year where I have been genuinely surprised by some of the performances both good and bad. Its too early for me to decide whether I think Yoona has improved since so far I have seen quite a bit of over-acting from her in PMandI but not as bad as previous roles, but I have been genuinely shocked by how much I like Go Ara as Najung in Reply 1994. For years I thought she was a pretty face but forgettable but I love her in this role. Its unfortunate that you are allergic to Lee Jong Seok because I Hear Your Voice was actually one of the better written and acted dramas of the year and School 2013 while lacking in many aspects was a great watch for the epic bromance alone, but to each their own. There has definitely been some things that you rave about that seriously have me going 0_0 and WTF? but everyone has their own taste and that’s the beauty of drama watching. I got bored near the end but Master’s Sun was defintely worth the watch for the palpable onscreen and offscreen chemistry between So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin. Shark was okay but dropped it midway do to a busy schedule. Monstar was adorable but lacked in development and I always felt it could of done more, but for slice of life dramas it was passable.

  14. I hated earlier episodes of secrets too, but after like 6th episode? It’s become good. All of Secret’s character sure are extreme but this drama really a guilty pleasure for me.

This year, I think I watch a lot but so little that I love dearly.
Monstar, I Hear Your Voice, Master Sun, Heartless City, and two that not yet ended but I hope still great till the end: Answer Me 1994 and In a Good Way.

And oh, I’m soooo happy Kim Woo Bin and Yoo Yeon Sok finally get spotlight they need. Plus discovered new talent named Ego Li

  15. Thanks very much, Koalasplayground. I agree with most of your reviews, especially the review on “That Winter, the Wind Blows” and Song Hye Kyo’s acting in the drama.

  16. I’ve dropped so many dramas because they were lackluster: JOJ, GFB, MHIYD, Heirs, WAY, TWTWB, GOF (I watched only the Tae Do and Jung Yi scenes),etc.
I’m watching and loving PMAI and only the OTP parts of Empress Ki, there were lots of SN and TH scenes that tbh I don’t feel.
The ones I watched complete were: CyranoDA, CA(because of my love for MGY and I misse her a lot this past 2 years), FBND (I enjoyed it all and reminds me that cute PSH is better in rom-com) and TMS (SJS and HHJ= Chemistry explode)
My favourite was Cruel City. I Loved! The doctors son, I loved the story and I loved the chemistry. The romance was epic!!!!
But my favourite chemistry was MGY and KB wich made me shipped them real and I’m a lucky one. Because it was my few all time ships and it became real. Best news of 2013: Kim Bum and Moon Geun Young dating!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And PMAI is in its way to become my favourite drama of the year, I hope it keeps its goodness.

  17. Thanks Captain K. Great wrap up for the year! I must say, however, that I thoroughly enjoyed Secret – Hwang Jung Eum’s horrific facial transformation, not withstanding – she’s still a pretty good actress.

  18. i watched the following and enjoyed them mostly: that winter, the wind blows; monstar (coz I am a B2ST fan too!); missing you; who are you; jang ok jung; heirs; flower boy next door (i watched all the flower boy series of tvN hehehe)

i dropped gu family book and mary him if you dare (great actors but the story is just sooooo disappointing for me)

enjoying empress ki and reply 1994 (team chil bong! hahaha)

i’ve become a fan of tvN/MNET coz they produced a lot of great series even if most didnt have big name actors.

  19. This year was so meh for me that I started watching anime, jdoramas & TW dramas instead. I don’t regret it at all.

Goodbye, Kdramas & your makjang crap!

      • xxxHolic! I was astonished at how well they managed to capture the look and feel of CLAMP’s artwork, but that drama nailed it, and Anne Watanabe was perfect as Yuuko.

(also Hanazawa Naoki, but everyone knows that already)

  20. Koala unnie,,,i am curious about something..what the reason do you allergic to joo won?
I am really curious cause i feel the same and i don’t even know why

  21. My favorite drama of the year was Cheongdamdong Alice, and i liked the second half as well!!! my second favorite was Secret.. pretty intense!! other than that i liked Kim Woo Bin in heirs.. not heirs itself though! kim woo bin totally stole the show!

  22. People that don’t enjoy Answer 1994 are either CB shippers or get too caught up in the husband game, if you know how to ignore this part of the drama, it is pretty enjoyable and have great scenes. But when you watch a drama and focus too much in not the main guy, this might happen.

I also know lots of people don’t like A1994 because they feel manipulated because of the trolling and husband game, I understand.

I also don’t get why two dramas have their images up there and didn’t get review but I from In a good way recaps, I can know Koala does not enjoy Answer 1994 much – her jarbs at A1994 while talking about In A good way did not go without notice – or maybe I’m being sensitive.

    • I’m a total Oppa shipper but Answer Me 1994 simply doesn’t have my heart in the same way as 1997 because of one reason, and one only – it’s FAR too long, and meanders way too much.

1997 wasn’t perfect either and got meander-y near the end but was kept in rein by having only 16 episodes. And 1994 definitely benefits from having more time to spend with the side characters, but I think 1 hour 15 minute-long episodes are just overkill.

    • I think you definitely are too sensitive. It’s too easy to say people who can’t enjoy A1994 are all CB shippers. I’m fairly neutral to both ships and enjoy some scenes from every episode, but on the other hand have to also skip some/fast-forward way too often. It started out really good but has fallen flat in recent weeks IMO.

  23. This year was a mess , not one memorable drama apart from Nine. Thank God for discovery of Kim Won Bin cause that was my highlight of year 2013.And Prime Minister and I if we can count that in 2013.

  24. January 2013 I was in Seoul git to watch missing and Alive live

Spent a few hours walking arounf

Looking for a drama being shot
Still remember the histel owner asking me if I understand yed I answered in Korean

    He shook hus geaf

  25. Dramas I loved in 2013: (in airing order) School 2013 (real shame you’re allergic to LJS, koala, because Woo-bin is fantastic here and so are the adults and other kids, especially Kwak Jung-wook), Flower Boy Next Door, Cruel City, I Hear Your Voice, and Master’s Sun (I’m definitely won over by their chemistry even if the thought of SJS doing comedy made me nervouse at first – he killed it). Also Potato Star, it’s hilarious and I’m loving Ha Yeon-soo.

Dramas I liked (but could have been better) – Monstar (way too slow, especially between episodes 10-12. Which is ridiculous, in a drama that is only 12 eps). But the cast was so great, it’s definitely one of the better dramas of 2013 for me.

Dramas I tolerated but was disappointed by: Gu Family Book (it only avoids earning my eternal hatred for its sloppy worldbuilding, regressive treatment of rape and terrible character writing because it introduced me to the talent of
    1. Choi Jin-hyuk (make this guy a lead already, he stole scenes left right and centre even from Lee Seung-gi)
    2. Lee Yubi (didn’t like her in Nice Guy, but here….I’ve never done such a quick turnaround on an actress, she may have been the second lead but she proved her acting chops and had far more convincing romantic chemistry with LSG than Suzy did. Another one who needs to move into lead territory, and soon)
And also Heirs – I never expected the central love story to be compelling or even interesting, and certainly didn’t expect the OTP to have any chemistry – and they proved me right. But between the excessive and repetitive staring and playing of Love Is More Pain/The Moment/whatever, I did discover an excellent and mostly wasted supporting cast who were far more watchable than the leads, even if the only one who really rose above his terribly-written role was Kim Woo-bin.
That Winter, The Wind Blows – it certainly had all the trappings of an old-school melo, and visually, it’s possibly the best-looking drama this year. And Jo In-sung and Song Hye-kyo both did a really good job with the acting, even if their chemistry wasn’t enough to make me feel invested in Soo and Young. Though I freely admit, the real reason I hung on to this drama was for Kim Bum and Jung Eun-ji – now they had great chemistry, and JEJ especially made the most of a small role with a really warm, earthy screen presence.

Hated and dropped midway/will never watch again: Sword and Flower (thank GOD Song Joong-ki and Park Shin-hye passed on this), You’re The Best Lee Soon-shin (too much crazy)

    • oh, and I forgot – Two Weeks definitely goes into the ‘love it’ column as well! Lee Jun-ki did a great job, even if I could at times feel him about to return to his pre-Arang hammy ways, it’s a good drama – shame it’s in a genre that tends not to be super popular, and up against strong ratings competition like Master’s Sun.

  26. I loved Nine, Cruel City and Ten- Season Two. I don’t know if Ten was filmed last year or not.
I did watch Goddess of Marriage until the last episode was to air and stopped.
Mostly, I’ve been reading recaps. A few times I would jump into a drama midway through, if it sounded interesting, but would always drop it.
I think I’m in a Kdrama slump. Seen it before or something similar.

I’ve switched over to Jdoramas for the time being or am watching movies.
One thing I like about Jdoramas, they don’t have as many episodes as the Kdramas do and sometimes 10-12 episodes are too long.

  27. I don’t why but Cruel City reminds me of Resurrection. Even when I see the stills, I think of Resurrection. Maybe it’s the color, maybe Jung Kyung Ho’s hairstyle beinf similar to Uhm Tae Woong’s.
I know that the plots are different but still…
    Is it just me?

  28. I like ‘incarnation of money’,’Secret’, ‘Cheongdamdong Alice’ and ‘goddess of fire, jung yi’. Moon Geun Young and Hwang Jung Eum’s acting skills are really good.

  29. I didn’t really watched many dramas this year, because some of the storylines I read were boring.

Cheongdamdong Alice – It was cute in the beginning, but I got bored halfway.

All About My Romance – I just loved this drama! I could rewatch again and wouldn’t get bored.

Bel Ami – I am suprised I’m loving this drama. It’s cute, funny and quirky. It sucks the ratings aren’t good.

Heirs – I didn’t watch this drama and I’m glad I didn’t. I would have gone crazy in the end.

  30. When I look at this year.., there was some great dramas there…
If I have to sum all up in the way how much I loved&cared, it would be:
    Cruel City;
    Saikou no rikon,
    Woman,
    Secret;
    Master’s Sun.

That would be 5 of over 40 dramas I watched this year.

    Runners:
    I hear your voice,
    Monstar,
    Empire of gold,
    R1997,
    Hanzawa Naoki,
    Love, now.

I don’t include dramas who are airing now.

  31. Thanks for this summary.

Actually, I was very happy to have you suffer (that is not what I mean!!) through the bad ones so I didn’t have to. Thanks for that, Koala. 🙂

When the years pass by, I think I will remember the intensity I felt watching Cruel City more than anything. The OST can bring me back to those moments in a couple with a couple strums of the guitar. And Jinjung Soo thrilled me, too.

Aside from that, Yoo Yeon-suk is the best thing that happened to me in 2013.

(Lego Li gets nudged into 2014 in order for me to make that statement.)

Looking at your list and some of the ones from the other sites, I see there weren’t any completely wonderful shows, just a lot of good bits and pieces here and there. That is OK. I can always go back and watch moments I loved.

  32. Ms. Koala,

Thank you for this year-end review. I agree with an earlier comment that said you have this really great way of balancing the affectionate gaze of a fangirl and the cold, analytical eye of a critic.

I’m always impressed by how you put forth your negative opinions. You seem to have a way of getting to the core of the issue by saying exactly what it is that you don’t like and why, rather than expressing your negativity through snarky comments regarding superficial matters.

So although I may not agree with you on some points of your year-end review, I do value your opinion so as to give some of the dramas that you rated highly a try, such as Cruel City.

Thank you for all the effort that you must put into this blog. Hopefully, 2014 will be a better drama year for you (i.e. The PM and I doesn’t disappoint).

  33. 2013 is for me the Best drama year.just the fact that “CRUEL CITY” was aired in this year is enough to put this year in my memory as a very good drama year.
-Cruel City -my best .you said it all in your review. The OSTs of drama are unforgettable.Months after the series finished I go to you tube and listen to them ,recalling in my mind each scene from that Drama.
-Incarnation of money-. Each episode was a cliffhanger.Kang ji Hwan was Awesome.
-Secret-I loved it from epis.1 to the end.Chemistry in main couple amazing.
    -Bel ami is funny .
-I Miss you -I really liked it.Crying in every episode was some kind of therapy-stress relieving from me.Lol.
-Gu Family Book -was good in its most part.
    – Was not Jodorama “Last Cinderella” this year?I enjoy a lot this one too.

  34. One man s meat is another s poison couldn’t ring more true!Abhorred some of those u put in the A list or thought to b recap/review worthy..

Secret was the cherry on the cake for many of us in 2013..Many stalked n grew obsessed with the plot, the storyline n
the amazing cast who outdid themselves..esp HJE..she s the new reigning queen of k melodrama while the sizzling chemistry btw JS n HJE left many breathless n giddy wth delight
    week after week!Best OTP ever!!
But like u,Couldn’t get past IHYV because of Lee Jong seok n I found the pairing of LBY n LJS to b the uncanniest n mismatched of OTPs in recent k drama history…shudder…
    Merry Christmas!

  35. I completely agree with your comment on the lack of a good rom com drama. Why does it seem like I had to wait the whole year for light fluffy dramas that are cute. Let’s Eat, Pretty Man, and The Prime Minister and I.

  36. Thank you for posting this year-end-review! I love to hear your take on each show, and what good dramas I may have missed and should check out or stay clear of.

Koala, with the amount of readers/followers you have, I really wish the Korean/Taiwanese drama industry will allow you to give your objective critique on how to better their live filming dramas.

  37. Secret was one of the best drama 2013 the main lead actress won best actress for that drama she deserved it ….. She made my cry until my head hurt that’s how good it was… Masters sun, I hear you voice, good doctor, gu family book, two weeks, cruel city,

  38. Top 5 highly recommended in my opinion and likes

    1) masters sun
    2) I hear you voice
    3) secret
    4) good doctor
    5) two weeks

  39. Much agree on your review for “Lee Soon Shin” It was boring on almost every episode because they focused on only so much grief towards Soon Shin. I stopped watching around episode 20.
