Hong Kong Born Superstar Coco Lee Passes Away at 48 Years Old After Taking Own Life

What a shocking news to wake up to and it just brings me back exactly 20 years in 2003 when news broke about Leslie Cheung’s passing. Hong born and America raised singer superstar Coco Lee (Lee Wen) has passed away as confirmed by her two older sisters in an official announcement. She was 48-years old and took her own life on July 2nd and was discovered by her elderly mother in her own home. After being rushed to the hospital and on life support for three days, she passed away. Coco was one of the last mega super stars in Canto- and Mando-pop and even reached the Oscar stage as the singer and voice of the Chinese-dubbed version of the Disney animated movie Mulan. She was married to Canadian music mogul Bruce Rockowitz but never had any kids with him. Reportedly the two have been separated for half a year after she caught Bruce cheating multiple times with much younger women, and recently Coco had surgery for a long standing spinal and leg pain problem and was recovering. Her sisters wrote that Coco was suffering from depression these past few years and ultimately is at peace now.

  • Coco had such a vibrant and beautiful personality. She was always laughing and full of energy in variety shows, that it's hard to imagine she has depression. Unfortunately, it's a silent disease that hides well amongst the crowds. I hope that she has found peace now. Thank you Coco for blessing us with your power vocals and performances all these years.

  • I disagree with the word she's at peace now, as if it's OK. Its not ok when someone committed suicide. We must do better to help, if can be helped. She was calling for help, in a way crying for attention but no one could s3e the sign. I just don't agree with the statement oh at least she's at peace now. I don't know if she is, I don't know if this is really what she wanted. All I know is no one happily commit suicide. Root cause is always sadness, that desperation.

    • My thoughts exactly! So wrong! Just like "losing the battle" with an illness or "gave up" if someone dies.

    • As someone who lost a family member to suicide, I don't agree with you. No one thinks it's okay to take your own life away. No one knows if she is at peace. No one knows what she felt. But is it so bad that we hope she's not in pain anymore?

I also disagree that no one saw the signs. Do you know what it feels like to lose someone to suicide and think that you could've done more? The guilt that goes with it? Feeling like you didn't do enough? You live out the rest of your life with "if only". You might ask yourself how did I miss that sign? There's a lot of overthinking. It takes a lot of therapy to come to terms that even if you think you did everything that you could, you might not have been able to stop that person.

I don't know who you are and why you made such a comment, but I hope you take care.

      • To those taking exception to the words "at peace", Ms Koala, just like all other blogs and mainstream news agencies, are just quoting Coco's sister's exact words.

    • Yes. It’s not ok. It’s bad enough that she suffered depression and on top of that she was married to a repeated cheater. I feel so bad for her. She seemed nice when I was watching her mentored some contestants for some singing program. RIP Coco.

    • I read a translation of her sister’s statement and don’t think “eh, it’s fine and she’s a peace” is quite accurate.

With great sadness, we are here [to] break the most devastating news: CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months," the sisters wrote. "Although CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.

    • If a person who committed suicide is "not at peace", I sincerely would like to believe that the person is no longer suffering or in pain. I would hate it if someone who had died suffering (due to any multitude of reasons) continue to suffer afterwards.

  • She's at peace IF she'd let go of her husband - no scumbag is worth anyone 'poisoning' themselves into ill health and festering further.

Often folks used Depression as a cause, without examining the factors. Those factors are human.
And ironically, it's all the humans left behind who do the talking, on behalf of the person gone from the world.

There's also articles she had Breast Cancer, and while she had surgery - he didn't care and was away somewhere.

It must be tiring to be the star of the family, as well.

  • Oh my my
    Why this is happened
I am so heart broken :( she is the truly legend that knock my heart once since the youngest age of us!rest in peace the angel coco :(

  • I used to hope when depression and suicides of celebrities are mentioned people will learn to be kinder in cyber spaces and not do scathing hate campaigns or cyberbullying etc. but after seeing many many netizens still behaving like bullies on the internet I realized those who have only hate and negativity in their hearts and enjoy others in pain will never change cyberbullying will continue and these netizens will never suffer for their hateful actions and I don't think any change is going to happen ever as long as humans exist these bullies will also exist.

I don't understand why people have to hate, at least people can be neutral right if you don't like them don't say hateful words just leave , move on is that so hard to do ? , is it necessary to spread hate ? to use words like swords ?.

My parents said be kind do not hurt other whether its in words or actions its hard to hold onto these beliefs when many people have shown the opposite behaviour or does internet bring out the worst in people because they are safe behind a screen and their real ugly personality can be finally released ,they utter prickly words to stab and hurt others and they don't suffer repercussions.
