The Ending Scene in Episode 8 of When the Stars Gossip is Being Called the Worst Sex Scene in the History of K-dramas by Netizens
Hahahaha, OMG I thought I was just losing brain cells continuing to watch When the Stars Gossip but it managed to one-up its sheer dumbassery at the end of episode 8 in ways that still boggle the mind. For a drama where characters spend all their time talking about fruit fly sex, mice sex, artificial insemination, lottery winnings, this weekend’s two episodes brought the standard space station in peril from space debris and the astronauts needing to evacuate. The whole thing led up to Lee Min Ho‘s character staying behind to save the last inseminated embryo and then later Gong Hyo Jin‘s character goes back solo to save him. Everyone else plops back to earth and sadly doesn’t die upon their ocean landing, bummer we have to see these characters more. The two stranded space lovers with negative chemistry find themselves naked and in a incubator/sleeping bag of sorts to stay warm and then proceed to have the most awkward and uncomfortable sex captured on film. K-netizens are furious and the interwebs lit up with insults and anger over what is being called the worst sex scene in the history of K-dramas. Hyperbole, yes, but sadly it may actually be factually accurate. It’s basically sex between two people who no one can understand why they like each other or feel that they want to bone, then having sex framed like some sort of conception of an alien in space montage.
Well what can one say to that? Lol… I have not even watched the show yet.

Yes exactly! All the fans claiming it was the ‘CGI’ holding back the post production. It was obvious no network or OTT wanted this drama because they saw the drama and knew it would flop. Keyeast must have pulled some major strings to get this drama on air to cut losses. This drama will add to TvN deficit again which not a good thing. Producers need to stop throwing money at big name stars and start looking for better scripts.
No worries. Something and her army of bots will be here soon to tell us that CJ ENM being on the brink of bankruptcy just proves that the drama is a success, somehow, and that only a star of LMH’s calibre could ever accomplish such a feat lol

New article dropped and WTSG pretty much undid all of the returns that TVN/CJ ENM earned from QoT last year. Company is in the red (because of this and Jeongnyeon – KTR’s show), and stock price has dropped double digits.
WTSG’s production costs spiraled out of control because of LMH and GHJ’s salaries + high CGI costs. CJ ENM was hoping Netflix would save them, but Netflix refused to buy this series out as an original show, leaving the show in limbo because no one else wanted to pay up either. The current distribution agreement with Netflix only covers 80% of production costs, and the the overseas sales aren’t looking optimistic for covering the other 20%.
Yeah…LMH and GHJ and everyone else involved are definitely gonna feel the impact of this one for their next projects, especially when it comes to salary negotiations.

Normally male actors fees are alway bigger than female actress but kim taeri nice track of hits that why his fees similar to ksh ,tvn rating was good but ott viewership was big problem internationally it was not hit as compared to domestic and biggest problem was Disney+ were many big hits 2024 like good partner,jude from the hell also face the same problem in ott viewership
Woa good for taeri for managing to secure that paycheck. It’s annoying though it’s not her fault, since Disney suck at promo also this show is not the kind of show that’ll be a hit with the international fans.
Domestic ratings =/= earnings. Jeongnyan had high domestic earnings, but cost alot to produce due to KTR’s salary and the set designs. The international earnings weren’t as high, so CJ ENM is at a loss. This isn’t the first high domestic rating show that ended up with negative profit. Jang Nara’s The Good Lawyer was also in the red, even though her salary wasn’t high.
This is why overseas sales are so important for kdramas. Korea itself is too small to be able to generate enough ROI.
Which is exactly why CEW is always booked and busy. His dramas SELL abroad at insane prices. Same with SK he has Netflix as a guaranteed taker for everything he does. The new generation isn’t about domestic ratings but international sales because drama production costs are sky rocketing and all the production houses big and small are in the red. Even rookie male leads increase their fees astronomically once they land one good project so its not cheap to hire rookies either and stars that aren’t able to breakout after multiple tries loose their chances at lead roles since there are no takers for international sales. OTT has changed the game for Kdrama but so has the new labor laws that make it impossible for production houses to exploit staff and crew like they used to but that pushes up the cost again which is why dramas are fewer and shorter these days. Everyone just trying not to go bankrupt at this point and between all that they throw away 50 billion KRW on this is space mess is just grabbing more eyeballs.
This is a good thread about the need for overseas sales to help the productions at least break even. At least in my country, the blockbuster dramas are not being acquired by the TV networks anymore not just because of the overall decline in viewership but also because of the exclusivity arrangements with Netflix and Disney+ (Viu does not hog its dramas as much). Very few dramas that are not N Originals get picked up either. So if Netflix is not picking up the bill, what overseas company will do that?
@peanut gallery – period dramas/sageuk are expensive to produce and can’t have PPL to offset costs, Jeongnyeon performed really well domestically but I’m not surprised it didn’t make as much money as a modern drama with the same ratings.
Not even the show dropping the OST with BTS Jin late in the airing (they advertised it at the beginning but released it after the poor drama reception) could give it a boost in buzz if the drama’s that terrible. WHEN the Phone Rings (=, some say it was mid but it’s a certified hit regardless), WHEN the Stars Gossip (-, all around crap), WHEN Life Gives You Lemons (__?; hopefully +?) ~
On the contrary, WTPR soundtrack performed incredibly well.
See The Light charted at #10 while YYS song charted at #7 of Billboard Global Chart. That’s enough to certify that the show is a hit esp among international audience.
I hope Tangerine will do well. It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a slice of life drama (My Mister being the last whereas I feel indifferent over My Liberation Note)

WTPR fans here have been raving about the show’s success but I didnt see YYS especially CSB bagging endorsements left and right if its a true hit though? It was probably with international fans but not in Korea. You’ll see how Lee Joon Hyuk and the new boy in Lady Ok and Trauma Code will bag CFs this year but not YYS and thats true success

As a KSH fan, its news to me that “True success” is now based of how many CFs someone bags LOL. He’s as successful as one can get in that dept spanning his entire career and yet if he didn’t do a quarter of those CFs, his dramas would still be just as successful. One day it’s “Koala didn’t write a post WTPR so it’s obv not successful” now it’s “No CFs!!”. The goal post keeps getting ridiculous. Your claim suggests JN wasn’t “true success” for KTR. Or Good Partner for Jang Nara or Knight Flower for Lee Honey since they arent bagging CFs left and right despite their 15% drama.
WTPR is huge internationally, performed fantastically on Netflix, and had incredible hype on socials. It was also a good project for MBC, did decently in ratings ending at 8% on the back of absolutely zero expectations. YYS was then nominated for Daesang by MBC. Success in Korea isn’t enough, yet WTPR is plenty successful there.
Trauma code can’t bag CFs – that’s literally a drama. If you mean JJH, I’d like to see that happen with the general Korean public sentiment towards him. And whether or not LJH gets CFs won’t change how successful Love Scout is. But aside from all this empty can noise, it’s amusing to see just how bitter some fools are getting over the popularity and success YYS and CSB got for WTPR. These are amazing actors who have proven their talents time and again. Being jealous of their drama’s fame won’t change the reality of your oppar’s flop.

Eternal King, Jirisan or Arthdal did not get half the hate this one’s getting. More baffling is how none of LMH’s fangirls minus 1-2 here are defending it. I’m enjoying LMH in this role, agree there is no chemistry, but I found the topic of the value of life thought provoking. The stylised sex scene was disappointing, and now we have to wait to see if they were more successful than the mice.
Over all its an interesting glimpse into life on a space station.
I’m going to continue watching.
Regardless of the vitriol hurled at the drama, I’m getting more and more fun following it and looking forward to new eps. One week is actually too long for me to wait for next plot development. No other currently airing dramas are as interesting to me as WTSG.
The ending scene of ep8 took me by surprise too. That’s too explicit for my taste. That said, Hollywood is not lacking any scenes more graphic and bizarre LOL. This writer seemed to want experimenting Hollywood ideas and obviously they fail Asian fans big time LOL. I’m not a fan of the romance she created either. Nonetheless, I read several positive reviews from Western critiques and they also pointed out the narratives of this drama have stepped out the comfort zone of typical K dramas that’s not for everyone. Even though the love lives between the OTP mostly fail to make fans fantasize like other old-school K romance LOL, the process of getting very strong bonding between the characters of LMH and GHJ was very realistic and convincing considering they went through critical moments of life and death in the space. And the acting at the moment they embraced kissing each other after passing the door to hell but one saved the other person, is GREAT and touching!
I bet Koala continued to watch the drama just for the sake to have a position to say something scathing about the story. This drama wasn’t her cup of tea from the right beginning. Once you have strong prejudice against a particular actor or a drama from the get go, it’s more than easy to continue to hate it to the end. We have to admit we are all biased. Koala loved cheesy slapstick Cdrama Dafeng and overpraised it through the end. I understand why and that’s fine because she just love Dylan Wang. That said, I don’t get the point if WTSG is such crap as Koala have been bitching about from ep 1 through ep 8, why not just drop it and give everyone peace of mind LOL, Koala? Or are you just using it as a click bait for your site traffic thanks to the fame of the leading actors and many waiting in line to diss LMH in particular LOL?

Asian drama fans love conformity and approval from others based upon my observation from several blogging sites. I’m here to offer different perspectives to remind people the universe has many dimensions (at least three D with our limited vision scopes) and infinite under Einstein’s theory of relativity, not a straight line with one direction only. We don’t have to all go in the same way with only one uniform voice. Therefore, please respect (minority) people who still appreciate this drama that is hated by most of Koala’s guests.
I voice a different opinion first so that the (possible) minority with similar views won’t be intimidated to speak their mind. Otherwise, Asian fan blogs like this one would just look more and more unanimous and close-rank LOL.

Reading from Reddit/Kdrama, there are many fans dislike WTSG with negative reviews. But they always presented their viewpoints with valid support and observations. They didn’t attack people who like WTSG or those who defended WTSG. Therefore, the subReddit has very balanced and nuanced dialogues among fans and you get to see diversity with various perspectives which are a very healthy blogging site. For example, each ep of WTSG has a recap and discussions followed with comments easily exceeding 150 or so but peaceful.
In contrast on this site, there were always a specific group of people including you who can only take favorable remarks about specific actors and are particularly scathing about certain other actors. Once you disagree with something, you started to attack the commenters. That’s why whenever there were many comments in a particular blog here, I smelt cesspool LMAO cuz it guaranteed verbal exchanges were going on. The commenters in this blog have left a foul taste in my mouth. I’m not a nice person. I usually teeth for teeth to see the other party deserve insult too LOL. If you criticize something it’s because “as a consumer entitled to review anything relevant to drama including scripts, directing, acting, visuals, and whatnot. I’m justified to criticize actors who are part of the products sold to me as a consumer. It makes sense for me to say certain actors not up to par if I don’t think their works are entertaining enough.”
Like so many annoying person you are blind and forgetful how many scathing comments you hurled to others here for a long time. I know this blog since forever but rarely comment. But I remember you as a person who are annoying, always itching for a debate and fights, always feel superior.
I never ever in my life commenting bad about any shows or any actors/actresses. As I said before if I don’t like any of them I just scroll past. But I can never stand a hater like you, who casually insulted casts just because you don’t like them. You whine and complain how this blog has a lot of users that likes to criticize, but lo and behold are no different, I dare say you are worse.

The fact thet some still watching it while hating it, doesn’t it mean that in some way they like it . Hate is the other face of love . Seemingly, the drama doesn’t leaves anyone indifferent and everyone can voice out what they feel about it . I dropped because as i said Space genre isn’t my cup of tea but i perfectly understand that people may like it or not . Some are lamenting that it was a waste of money, yes but at the same time they try to offer something new in K drama land , if producers always play safe dramaland will have the same fate as Marvel cinematic universe :a decline in viewership . I’m pretty confident to say that I’ve never been the one initiating insult on people who have different perspectives except for those I regard as CCP stooges LMAO. But once people gaslight or shade or name call or whatever sh*tty enough spitting on me or someone else who I don’t see deserving such insult, I’m not shy of returning eye for an eye. LOL. I must lost my mind for a bit, knowing how koala’s habit is, and yet here I am still getting bait clicked lol. Funny that despite of hating the drama and doesnt enjoy it at all, she still watching and posting about it, just like you said, I questioned her motive often. And fascinating that among all comments, only yours that I found positive and most importantly objective and mature. I really wanted to do something with all these negativity, but I know you know how severe their negativities here, that I wonder, do they think of themselves being true objective and neutral in judging and commenting, or simply doesnt care being subjective and carelessly negative?
I am already in my mid 30s, I am simply skip or drop something that I dont enjoy. Even more in cricizing about something, specially when it comes to creativity, I try to always hold my tongue and my hand from writing something that I know could be very subjective. Many of us here koala’s readers, are not young at all, but I wonder if we all just bunch of immature and unhealthy adult, carelessly and or thoughtlessly and or heartlessly having fun and joy in sharing negativity.
last, despite of massive negative comments and reactions toward this drama, I found WHEN THE STARS GOSSIP is very refreshing, unnaturally provocative, objectively it’s one of most challenging production in korean drama history, as a fan of the casts (specially Gong Hyo-jin and Oh Jung-se), I am proud they took this project, their acting performance is always a treasure for me to watch. And for chemistry between Hyo-jin and MIn-ho, it’s not really apparent in beginning, but started from episode 6 it started kicking in and in ep 8, I am genuinly in awe and you all can come at me and yet I wont change my mind, it’s one of the most beautiful intimate scene in any kdrama I’ve watched.
Koala, to be honest, since you enjoyed It’s OKay It’s Love, I expected you to be more objective and neutral, but seem you just dislike it too much to not see the good side of the drama… it sadden me a bit…
Idk how often you have visited Koala’s blogs. She’s by no means objective and has very strong personal preference like most of her guests visiting this site, me included. As a matter of fact, you may be in the younger demographics among Koala’s guests. There are quite a few overbearing old bones making obnoxious remarks dissing whoever doesn’t close rank with them like Kpop teens LMAO. They won’t change as one of them hinted “old habits die hard” LOL. If you frequent this site, you will quickly have an inkling of what I’m saying. This blogging site is biased in general and toxic in some threads. The overall messages delivered are not diverse neither balanced like Reddit Kdrama but one-sided.
That’s fine cuz it’s a personal blog with a very strong individual style. This site has its own merit. Koala doesn’t censor speech and I give her kudos for respecting freedom of speech. Koala is a long-term US resident. So I think she truly understand the spirit of this country.
That said, people have to understand the opinions prevalent and favored on this site do not represent the opinion landscape of the international community which is better and more accurately reflected in the Kdrama section of Reddit. Besides, a lot of fans of popular K or C actors just stop coming to this site cuz they certainly figured out the volume of hostility exuded by a lot of users who are more vocal about what they love and hate.
I kept writing about WTSG and LMH cuz I have seen a lot of guests here in particular have a strong fetish to diss him and his works. I’m not even his fan. But I laughed out loud when antis purposely dismissed his accomplishment and contribution to the hallyu wave. The bigotry magnified through many toxic remarks appear out of touch. I just don’t want to see this site get further polarized and fans of certain actors are intimidated to speak up. LMH still has a huge fanbase by just looking at the numbers of the comments on each ep. recap over Reddit, let alone there are other international websites raving about him and WTSG. The vitriol against the actor on this site is actually coming from the minority of the international drama fans in reality. And I assure you most of these antis are not native English speakers but ASIAN LOL. Even when international drama fans are not satisfied with WTSG, most of them don’t attack, mock, or diss the actors, as I’ve read from Reddit.
I would suggest fans of this drama do the same if they hate the negative comments so much, they can stop visiting this site. Spend your time at dedicated fan sites and discuss what you enjoy instead of spamming the comments section here.
Also taking about negativity, Koala’s guests in general, specifically some avid and vocal readers of her blogs, are indeed very gossipy LOL. I guess that has much to do with their Asian (Chinese in particular) upbringing. I am Asian myself. I don’t downgrade my own race but still have to be honest with some facts. Many of those remarks reek of acrimony came from people of Chinese descent or related Asian blood since they are also Cdrama fans. I gather they picked up this obnoxious habit of being extremely negative, trolling, and obnoxious from online culture that is prevalent on Chinese social media. I also checked Chinse social media from time to time. They share similar traits, very different from most Western social media I visited .
@Leah, that’s what I’ve been contemplating recently given that I have found other Kdrama blogging sites where commenters are more savvy LOL. But Koala will lose a lot of traffic and therefore ads $$$$$ cuz she has to admit that even spammers have created a lot of comments and contributed to the traffic. LOL. But your reminder is a good one under my consideration although I’ll miss fun chats with some nice guests here anyhow. LOL

I think it might have the lowest kdrama views in Netflix history. Only Top 10 in one country and #69 on Netflix global list. The fan girls are right about one thing, it’s GLOBAL FLOP.
