Tan Song Yun and Liu Xue Yi in Talks for Period Romance C-drama Against the Current Adapted From Novel The Fate of the Orchids Fragrance
An upcoming C-drama production in the works is close to finalizing the leads, and it looks to be Tan Song Yun paired with Liu Xue Yi. The drama is titled Against the Current (Chinese title 兰香如故 Lan Xiang Ru Gu or Orchid Fragrance Remains) and is adapted from the novel 兰香缘 Lan Xiang Yuan or The Fate of the Orchids Fragrance. It’s a period drama and the two leads are noted stars who manage to deliver chemistry with their leads and the performance needed for the character, but both are hit and miss with picking scripts. C-novelist Tong Hua is connected to this project as the drama script screenwriter and this seems to be her recent return as she also did the script for modern C-drama Filter.
This is a pairing I can get behind. Filter was well written though and I enjoyed that drama as quirky as it was so hopefully this upcoming story does well.
Wow… he is definitely doing well now… I like Tan Song Yun but she does not alway get very good scripts.
Love both actors. The novel is still on hold, i’ve read the first 4 chapters and not having an urge to continue. I expected they cast younger actors but both TSY and LXY are good actors. Wah, i like most of TH’s dramas. So, probably will give this one a try too.
Sorry HL, didnt mean it as a reply…
But agree with your comment. TSY’s choice a miss or a hit.
No worries…I make that mistake sometimes too.
oh myyyy I would be so very interested in this pairing! I hope it happens and script would be written well written progressive romance with slice of life.
Seven Tang picture is a bit weird, her teeth does not align with her nose. This is orthodontic precision.
Curious to see how they manage to adopt the novel without changing basically everything. SPOILER.
The male lead of the novel has multiple concubines and doesn’t shy from spending time with them, he forces the protagonist to become his concubine because she is beautiful, nevermind that she doesn’t want. She tries to escape a couple of times and hates him for having crushed her hope of having a good life. At the end she resigns to her fate to having no other choice in life
That sounds obnoxious but accurate to the time period lol… it almost sounds like her other drama where she was a concubine or main wife role. Not sure how they would change it either. You know with that comes the war of women to gain the main man’s affection and then some. It is what it is.
I think Sword and Brocade really felt more like historical fiction where a couple gets married because it was what they sort of expected it was their duty. From the description above, it sounds like the FL in this story tried to resist being concubine-trapped by the ML and was ultimately unsuccessful…which makes it sadder. They may downplay the amount of time he spends with the concubines and focus on the FL’s ability to rule over the hearts and management of the house and win the respect and admiration of everyone.
In the end, I guess it’s all about the execution. If the marriage happens early enough in the drama, there is time for a long redemption arc.Anyways, I really like these two actors and look forward to them working together.
TSY is a solid actress. But funny that I’ve never finished one single drama of hers. Interesting scripts just didn’t go to her?? Why?
