Supernatural Investigative Period C-drama The Demon Hunter’s Romance with Allen Ren and Song Zu Er Ends Run with Decent 7.3 Douban Ratings
iQiyi is surely breathing a sigh of relief with the reception for it’s fantasy supernatural period C-drama The Demon Hunter’s Romance. The shelved for nearly two years drama airdropped in early April once the ban on female lead Song Zu Er was lifted and the result was better than expected. The drama got stronger than expected reviews especially for male lead Allen Ren who many felt was back to his strong suit in playing the stoic yet still emotionally aware male lead. Song Zu Er has long been a top among the flowers of her generation for both her visuals and her acting so her performance here was par for the course. It helps that the directing was sharp and the vignette stories interesting, and the drama recently wrapped its run and opened with a solid 7.3 Douban ratings.

This drama is definitely joining my list of rewatchable dramas.
Mine too. I watched to support Song Zu’er and it exceed my expectations. I dont want to compare it to others great Chinese dramas, this was entertaining for me. Even Allen Ren was watchable.
It’s making me look forward to Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei’s Moonlit Reunion as well, where the male lead is also a demon hunter.
I hope this drama will be good for Xu Kai… He is not a bad actor, he looks good but there something lacking in his dramas… I wish him well this time.
He seems to do well when he has chemistry with his co-star. The most recent drama which I think he’s good in is As Beautiful As You.
It’s such well made drama, in terms of writing, and cinematography, it’s beautiful. Director did a great job, and usually lifeless Allen Ren is very suited for role. Love it.
I think if iQIYI didn’t mess up with AI open ending the rating Douban would be higher.
I agree.
The stories were interesting and engaging. I know I have hard time finishing dramas but this one, I’ve finished it in one week. The open ending was absolutely not necessary though.
I dropped it thanks to SZE’s visuals. She looked so weird, not my cup of tea. But I may pick up again given good reviews. I can overlook visuals if everything else works.
Allen Ren should be given more opportunity to show personality, as he was allowed to do in this. I really enjoyed it….except I didn’t like the conclusion of the drama. She went from being a strong, independent character, willing to follow her heart, to a very weak version who asked HIM to stay (regardless of his huge responsibilities)… but why? So she didn’t have to leave her parents? What was the writer thinking?
She still lets him go in the end though. For someone who just recalled her lost memories and feelings, she’ll be devastated upon knowing that she cannot stay reunited with her lost love. I think it’s a very human reaction to try her best to see if there’s a slight chance her love can stay. But I do wish we could have a happy ending too, with her following Xuanye to his world.
I read it is to open for season 2…unsure if it is true..
How much I hate it when they leave an open ending hoping to produce a 2nd season one day. Generally when the cast have not signed a contract it is unlikely they would come back for another season and if a story could be finished in one season why prolong it? How many dramas have been ruined this way simply for making more money of course.
@Gelar, that I definitely agree… I never forget the few dramas with such ending that annoys me. Worst many Season 2s do not even live up to expectation.
Exactly
It still doesn’t work for me. I dropped it and back to Kdrama again LOL. I can’t get over SZE’s weird visuals that aren’t something appeasing to me taste at all. I’m indifferent to Allen Ren but think his acting very natural, not awkward as many C MLs. I’m indeed very comfortable with his acting here and the plot isn’t that boring. But dang I just don’t understand how people even rate SZE’s visuals so high. She is even ugly in my aesthetic definition. LOL.
with that ending no matter how much I enjoyed a serie it just leaves a bad taste :c sadly..
