He Yu and Bao Shang En Start Filming Period Romance C-drama Yao Yao You Qi Adapted From the Novel Di Mo
The year end just days away has not stopped the filming commencement in C-drama land and new iQiyi period C-drama Yao Yao You Qi (窈窈有期) adapted from the novel Di Mo (嫡谋 best translated as Scheme of the Official Descendant) started filming this week on December 31st. The drama stars He Yu and Bao Shang En as a rebirth story for the female lead who gets a chance to avoid all the traps that led to her whole family getting annihilated in her first life. Even though these types of novels are so common these days if done well it’s still a very thrilling ride.

Bao Shang En is in so many upcoming dramas.
I hope she changes her acting style.
She often acts cute, coquettish ….
Well if you like that style over and over again….
I’ll check this drama to see if He Yu can be as impressive as in the recent drama with Esther Yu. Esther Yu once again forced me to exit. He Yu’s hotness can’t even save Esther’s cringe-worthy acting and wardrobes. lol
I watched SAL, a bit of it at least but I couldn’t stand FL. I’ve never watched this actress before so gave it a chance. ML was decent and fit the role well but something about the FL made it really hard to continue, more so of her character if felt like it was all about visuals trying to look pretty in every angle, looking with wide eyes, the voice and acting cutesy with little substance. Just sort of curious if the actress is like this for every drama or maybe just this one was really bad.
I don’t think the character in the writing attributed to Esther Yu’s phony acting. She was always like that in every single drama I’ve ever checked out, looking pretentious and affected. She acted more naturally in just one costume drama, My Journey to You. But the 2nd FL somehow stole her thunder there. lol
These two are an eye candy. Can’t wait to see how the chemistry will be like.
I’ve read the novel and wasn’t a fan of it. With my expectations so low, this drama probably has a slightly higher chance of being satisfactory.
The schemes itself—the inner courtyard shenanigans, the intricate extended family politics, and “face-slappings”—were objectively good. The side characters and their backstories were solid and interesting. But I found the OTP bland and predictable. ML was perfect AND boring, FL was also perfect and a bit cold and boring. Because I couldn’t root for them, the whole novel became meh for me.
Hopefully, these two actors can inject warmth and likeability to the main characters.
I like Bao Shang En well enough, she is good as supporting and recently elevated FL status. Can’t say the same for He Yu, he didn’t make much impression in supporting roles and his visual is below par as ML.
They seem well-matched in terms of rising careers. I haven’t warmed up to Bao Shang En in anything that I’ve seen her in. Hope this will change my mind.
