Zhang Wan Yi and Shen Yue Cast in Modern Family C-drama Adapted From Novel — 6 Comments

  1. Personally I think this is a good step for Shen Yue’s career. Got to know her from Meteor Garden (though silly, it was highly entertaining 🤭) and she’s a constant on the VS circuit (I watch more variety Chinese shows than dramas). She’s sweet and funny and always gets along with everyone, and they all always seem to like her and end up being friends, so I’m actually excited for this genre expansion for her. The last drama I watch of hers was Smile Code with Lin Yi, and although I found the start a bit slow, it really picked up and it ended up being a really good drama for me. So I do think she has potential. Although I also like Zhang Wanyi (from watching Are You the One), his fans have been a bit too aggressive in this casting. Shen Yue won a couple of awards for a similar genre (slice of life) last year for Six Sisters, so I do believe she has what it takes to portray a more in depth character other than idol dramas. Though the pairing is unexpected, I’m excited to see how this will develop 👍🏻

  2. Personally, I don’t like him. It’s hard to believe he’s completely innocent given how his fans have been attacking his female co-stars, rumored or confirmed, from Wang Churan to Ren Min to THE Ma Sichun and now Shen Yue, as if the public would automatically side with him over actresses who are not only beautiful but widely respected and layered in their performances. Shen Yue has been quietly building her momentum. Her work in Six Sisters, Smile Code, and Love in Pavilion has been genuinely well received. Looking through her filmography, her range is more diverse than many so-called traffic stars, even those heavily backed by industry seniors. Anyone still reducing her to A Love So Beautiful and Meteor Garden just sounds outdated and unwilling to keep up.

    • Totally agree. She’s on a steady pace instead of a sprint, which is great for her compared to some traffic stars who are getting burnt out. She said in one of her variety shows that this year she wanted to get more acting awards and try to get roles other than idol dramas if she gets the opportunity. Never watched ALSB (the storyline didn’t appeal to me) but I actually loved her in Love in Pavilion. I think not many actresses can portray a childish and cute character without being cringey and annoying, but her portrayal in that was endearing. I saw LSS and ZYL also doted on her and praised her a lot during their time doing that drama. I remember watching her on an acting workshop variety show from a couple of years ago, and it’s such a contrast from the stage shy girl who’s grown to be able to perform on large stages with other singers and actors. I can’t believe Zhang Wanyi’s fans digging early footage from that variety show to criticise her skills and marketability. They sure didn’t go far enough to see that all those senior actors in that workshop shaped her up throughout later episodes and all ended up praising her. I also remember a while back there was an actor tier list and iirc Shen Yue was listed under the A tier, which is not bad… at least she’s not B tier. Compared to A+ or S…. It means she still has a chance to sell something to her audience. So I don’t get their vehement rejection without even giving her a chance. Worse they are personally attacking her looks over her acting skills as well. But tbh I can’t really blame ZWY. He’s a free agent, and I don’t think he adept to handle PR like this maybe…. It’ll probs be a damn if he does or damn if he didn’t say anything about the fan war, so maybe he’d rather not rock the boat in case he exacerbates the situation 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I don’t know him well enough to criticise him anyway. I only watched Are You the One cause I like Wang Chu Ran. Didn’t know his fans were doing her dirty as well, that’s news to me. Besides, isn’t he busy shooting some other drama before starting this drama 🤔 His fans should just focus on that instead of attacking innocent parties.

  3. Zhang Wan Yi’s acting is okay, but he always look tense or perturbed. It’s like there’s a mask on his face – too much botox? His upper lip sometimes disappears too when he’s acting and that’s also not appealing to look at.

But his acting is watchable – he gives all the necessary emotions. I would like to see him in something more relaxed.

  4. I was on a point where giving up on him because he is quite stiff and same style of acting esp in costumes. But after hearing these casting news Im quite excited and hopeful again.
I dont know how Shen Yue does it but she always manage to have heartfelt moments with her lead guys one way or another in dramas.
Not only drama but Im also excited to have behind the scenes videos now. I cant wait to check what kind of dynamic they are going to haveee
