Lost You Forever Chapter 9: Brow Furrowed, No Choice But Mutual Avoidance — 75 Comments

  1. Thank you for the chapter. You ate very quick Koala. Xiao Liu’s meeting with the Consort brought tears to my eyes.

I missed Xiang Liu in this chapter though.

  2. I cried a bucket every time read this part where Xiao Yao begged for her mom. It’s just heart wrenching to lose mom at young age.

  3. great! It seems that Jing is the most sadness character in the story! Wanna see what is going on after that. Hope next chapter will be posted tomorrow 🙂

  4. Jing is so smart.

And poor Xiao Yao. Her backstory is so sad! I wonder why the fox felt a sense of relief when it was about die? Wily as a fox. Wily as a fox. Somehow, I can’t get over the fact that it let down its guard to be poisoned, and remain calm was it gets murdered.

  5. Jing is so smart.

  6. Question! How exactly did Xiao Yao lose her powers, and why is she no longer able to cultivate them? I thought this chapter would explain, but it doesn’t?

Ah, Zhuan Xu. I would’ve like to see you wallow in your remorse a bit (okay, a lot) longer. Think of all the mean/bad things you did to your little cousin-sister. 😛 Hmmph.

The reunion between Xiao Yao and the Grand Emperor gets to me every time. Sniffle.

Personally, it annoys me when characters in C-novels (and elsewhere) marry doppelgängers of their old loves. Grand Emperor, I’m looking at you. It’s not in the least bit romantic. You lost your chance with your old love (A’Heng), now reap the consequences. You should take your own words of wisdom to heart: “It’s not only ill intent that causes harm, a lot of harm is caused by love.”

  7. This line is epic
    – “I’ve always been scared. To desire comes worry, to love comes fear. It would be strange not to be scared.”
    Love this novel!!! Thank you.

  8. Jst finished reading this chapter and i actually acted it out and cried rivers.

Loved the pained longing after her mother and the moment between zhang xu and xiao yao like when they were kids.

And boy did i miss xiang liu!!!

Its amazing how a gruff, rude character like xiang liu can grab so much attention.

Still don’t know which boat out of three to sail ‘uri’ xiao liu in. All three guys are awesome!!!

  9. one more reason to like xiang liu. he has no girls around him. Si Qi with his fiancee and Xuan with Ah Nian. why do i feel Ah nian will cause trouble in the future. i miss Xiang Liu in this chapter.

(i wonder whether you get enough sleep or not)
    take care miss koala

    • Exactly my sentiments. Always prefer the leads that singlemindedly has the heroine only in his sights. Those that get entangled with other women for whatever reason lose brownie points:)

  10. Oh my…plot thickens. I guess, that Ah Nian luvs her gege ( i think, she is only a sub sis for Z, niyhin beats wt his bond wt XY ) so much to the point of marriage wc will seal GX kingdom succession for him. But, going XY way…will be like hittin 2 kingdom in one stone. I guess, AH and the consort will become wicked witches for XY as Jing will face headache wt Ya Ying ( lyk her name ) who i guess is related in some way wt Xiang Liu. *sigh* its so complicated who will XY will end wt.

    • I meant, nothing beats Z’s bond wt XY and i like fei fang Ya Ying’s name. I also wonder who is the real Xiang Liu behind the nine headed demon exterior. Will he be XY’s Huo Quo Bing or Meng Jue? He got the advantage of the 2 promises XY gave.

  11. This is my first time reading anything based on Chinese mythology, so I’m confused about why would Xiang Liu would be a viable option for her. She knows he’s hiding his true form as a Nine-headed Demon, (and is cheeky enough to mention it as a goad to his pride) so I don’t think she would ever fall in love with him. I do think their personalities are compatible for a great friendship, though. I don’t know enough! Would a god marry a nine-headed demon (one that’s not in disguise) and have a family, etc??

    • In a previous chapter when they were dealing with Chuangzi’s marriage issues, it was said that La Mu came from a kingdom where gods could marry whoever they wanted even if its demons. However, I’m not sure this kingdom is like that.

Xiao Liu the normal guy could marry whoever she wants but Xiao Yao the royal daughter can’t. Royal marriages are mainly used to stabilize a kingdom and I can see her being destined to marry Zhuang Xu. Unless her dad gives her a pass if she doesn’t want to.

  12. I love the part about Zhuan Xu, it seems like he loves his cousin a lot and they have a long history backstory. I always have a soft spot for the gege, close male relative who takes care of the heroine, and in this case a soulmate as well, maybe he is a good compromise between soft Jing and wild Xiang Lu. He is not too soft and not too wild. He is impressive in his own way and has a sad backstory too. Looking forward!

  13. You’re so fast! Thanks so much Ms. Koala!!^^

I’m glad we’re finally getting some backstory to Xiao Liu, which means we are closer to her showing her true form. Yay!
I’m excited to see the development of the love square. It seems in this chapter she keeps having to divide her attention because both males are worried for her hehe but I do indeed miss Xiang Liu in this chapter 🙁

I’ve been wondering..her real father is Chi You who was part of Shen Nong tribe and now Xiang Liu is the General of the Shen Nong Army so is there some sort of connection or am I getting everything wrong? Lol.

    • also does everyone know that the Grand Emperor isn’t her real father? Is that what she overheard in the carriage and that’s why she asked him ‘are you really my father?’ and he was so responded back so adamantly?

and who is her ‘mother’s friend’? i know reading Once Promised isn’t necessary to appreciate this book, but i was wondering if we could get a quick synopsis of what happened during that book so we can get a little more context? i know that’s asking a lot on top of translating chapters, but if anyone else can give a breakdown that’ll be really helpful!

  14. Her parents felt the need to mask her true form….She must be very powerful. She had a rough start in life….SQ of the fox clan. Reminds me of Aesop’s fable(s).

    Thanks for another terrific chapter.

  15. Aaaaaawwww! That scene in Ah Nian’s room was heartbreaking! I feel so sad for her loosing her mum at such a young age. Her reunion with her dad and gege was bittersweet. I loved how she pretended to be this rude uncouth person so that he wouldn’t recognize her. I’m amazed at how she is able to rise above the horrible circumstances she has been through. I don’t think I would be able to forgive a person who tortured me for years.

I fear that Shi Qi will be told to stay away from Xiao Liu because he already has a fiance. He will probably be sent away soon since it wouldn’t be proper for a princess to be in close intimate terms with someone who already has a fiancee. But I’m still on this ship even if circumstances are causing it to sink. I just love how he is able to read her mind. He got a blanket because he was cold, he peeled her fruits, he carried her everywhere, etc. How can he be so perfect?!

  16. Xiao Yao looks a lot like her real father, the Great General Qi Yo of the Sheng Nong Kingdom. Hence at her birth, her mom and the Grand Emperor placed a magical object in her body that gave her the power to change her face, and her mom changed her face immediately so she looked like the Grand Emperor.

Yup, all hell would’ve have broken loose if anyone suspected she was Qi Yo’s daughter.

    • Sugar! Does that mean we never get to see Xiao Yao’s real face? I mean does the Emperor know that she is not his real daughter? If he doesn’t then it’s best Xiao Yao never reveals her real face. OR maybe she does find out how she really looks and all hell will break lose and the we can see Xiang Liu again. I really missed him. I hope he appears soon. He lights up the pages for me.

      • Didn’t the Grand Emperor change her face? Doesn’t that mean that he knows she’s not his daughter?

    • Oh…Thanks for the response. I hope we read more about that latter. As for now, I hope she stops with these “palm promises” since the first one had the voodoo bug thingy melt into her hand giving off a phoenix notion….

    • Oh…Thanks for the response. I hope we read more about that later. As for now, I hope she stops with these “palm promises” since the first one had the voodoo bug thingy melt into her hand giving off a phoenix notion….

  17. Thank you thank you! Was refreshing the page out of impatience and imagine my glee when there was a new chapter! You must be a goddess as we’ll to be able to translate so fast and still do your normal daily duties! I don’t know who to ship anymore as all three leads seem perfect for Xiao Liu. And she really is one of th best female leads ever – her strength, her wit, her ability to see the big picture and not over dramatize every little thing is truly a joy to read. Such a real yet fantastical novel. TONG HUA SHOULD READ THIS AND MAKE YOU HER OFFICIAL TRANSLATOR FOR ALL HER NOVELS!!!

  18. Ms. Koala, do you accept Starbucks gift cards as a token of appreciation? If yes, I think myself and all your devoted followers need to send you hundreds of them. In between drama recaps, celeb news and translating the more than amazing story, how do you have time to sleep? Thank you SO much for all your hard work and seriously, please let us know what we can do for you.

  19. Koala, I think I know which ship you are on, judging from your opening lines, kekeke. I’m on book 3 now, and am still following your translation, so it’s like a recap for me. As you know, many of us can’t get this story out of our mind that easily!

  20. Cried during the scene where Xiao Yao saw the Empress who resembled her mother. </3 It was so heart breaking imagining her breaking down like that. I love the way Zhuan Xuan came to her rescue and comforted her. However, now that things are this way, her love life would be even more difficult. Honestly, I don't see her having any romantic feelings for Xuan. I see them having sibling love, probably because they grew up together. Something about the way Xiao Yao treats him sort of puts him in the "friend zone." Her interaction with Jing is obviously romance, but how far can it go? She's really attached to him but fears that he'll end up having to leave her side due to their birth status. However, her relationship with Xiang Liu is the one that confuses me the most. They argue like a married couple but she doesn't seem to realize where they're headed. Their relationship could go from acquaintances to romance (even though he already likes her) but could also stop at friendship depending on how Xiang Liu pursues her and whether or not she guards her heart. I'm torn between shipping Xiao Yao and Jing or Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu. Jing is your typical nice guy who will sacrifice anything and everything for the one he loves but Xiang Liu is the hot bad boy who secretly falls in love and also attempts to sacrifice for Xiao Yao. I guess the best solution is to not ship her with these 3 guys, but to ship her own happiness. xP

  21. All these are heart breaking and all since we all imagine her as a girl rather than a girl. But imagine all those love scene and cry moments with the guy form is kind of awkward and weird X: I can’t help but laugh. And this is getting really complicated how she doesn’t even know her true form and her childhood form is not even her… This is just crazy plot

  22. I cried when Xuan knew Xiao Yao identity. his regret feels so deep but fortunately they can get along very well after that.
and even though i’m already read this chapter last week but when xiao yao scream for her mom, i’m crying again. I can’t stop my tears! so much pain in her life. poor Xiao yao.
    Thank you Koala.

  23. Now I see why Xiao Yao likes Xiang Liu. He is so free compare Shi Qi and Zhuan Xu. Shi Qi is tied down by his past and need to cut his marriage ties to be with her. Zhuan Xu will just be a constant reminder of her past and the whole messing/complicate royal shebang if she is to be with him. Being with Xiang Liu would let her have an escape from all the family ties and political mess. I completely understand it…why she always feel so relax and mischievous around Xiang Liu. And my god, she is only eight years old to be going through something traumatizing like that!! My poor darling XL/Xiao Yao!

  24. Hiiiii!!! KOALA!

I confess I’ve been a silent secret admirer of you and discover your site ever since couple of years ago (since 2010?) when you translated Da Mo Yao. 25. Just wondering…

    1. Xiang Liu always go to Xiao Liu for his blood. Now Xiao Liu is at Grand Emperor’s place and how does Xiang Liu be able to control his need? I have a nagging feeling that Xiang Liu probably sneak in to take a look at Xiao Liu from time to time.

    2. How come Ye Shi never show any signs of jealousy when he saw “love bites” or Xuan hugging Xiao Liu? He must have tremenduous control over his feelings.

    • Haha! Xiang Liu is not a vampire! He does not lust purely for Xiao Yao’s blood. He enjoys sucking her (or kissing her), and only occasionally feeds on her to recover from his injures or teach her a lesson.

Shi Qi doesn’t show his jealousy because he knows he has no right to exhibit such emotions. Xiao Yao doesn’t belong to him, yet.

      • Thank you, Nekoi for enlightening me.

So will Xiang Liu rush to Xiao Liu’s rescue since Xiao Liu’s hands are badly beat? *another round of anticipation*

    • Unfortunately, you might want to prepare your heart, because this novel is not all about Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu. Xiao Yao may be a damsel in distress at times… okay, many a times, but she also has 2 other knights waiting to save her princessy arse. XDDD

  26. Thank you again for another fabulous chapter translated!! You make me wish I paid more attention in Chinese school so I could read these books myself! SO thankful you’re translating this for us. Waiting with bated breath for the next chapter!

  27. The problem with loving a story like this is that every chapter bring more excitement and joy to the reader but it brings a ton of trepidation. Kind of like sprinting towards a rainbow barefoot over broken glass. I’ve read a lot of Chinese novels but only a few has the power to make me want to read it all in one session and yet to stop every few chapters and wallow in the memories of all the emotional upheaval. I want to know how it ends now, so I can go back and enjoy my favorite parts in peace, but doing that requires me to finish something that I can’t say goodbye to. Tong Hua is a true master.

    Thank you, Koala!

  28. No idea where my post went…does anyone have any idea how Xiao Liu gave her identity away? How did the emperor guess???

  29. Gosh Mz Koala I think you’re doing this deliberately – dangling a carrot in front of us – and I must say I’m loving every minute of it.

You’re certainly keeping us in suspense and we love you for it.

I can’t wait for the next instalment or better yet Xiao Yiao’s true face.

This is such a wonderful tale and thank you very much for sharing it with us. It almost seems superfluous to say thank you because we are eternally grateful for your time and effort in translating this novel but I’ll say it again – THANK YOU!

  30. Yet another intriguing chapter, thanks for translating! The sacrifice of the two men is touching, how could the lady not tell the depth of her influence on them? All that distance for two questions indeed! The end of the chapter left me feeling low with the hopelessness at this point. I guess she won’t resolve her real face so soon, yet she has to settle on once the Grand Emperor makes the announcement of her return. I look forward to more soaring emotions coming up. Have no idea what will come next..

  31. I never read Once Promised but I’m pretty sad for the Grand Emperor. What kind of regret or resignation is he living with in order to choose to be with only one person who is just a look-a-like of the person he loves. Good to know that his father-daughter relationship with XY is good and brings him happiness.

I lol when she drank the hand washing water. I miss these light-hearted scenes. The last time I laughed was when she drew all over XL’s face. will there be any more funny scenes or is it going to be heartbreak paradise from here on?

    • Pls let me add….Not only she is just a look a like, she is only a consort, never an empress. I’m Sure she and the princess will cause Xiao Yao great pain. I’m so much looking forward to XL’s back story and so much more of XY’s hidden real face. What a novel *sigh*

    • The regret of a life time…

I gathered from the comments of those who read Once Promised that Xiao Liu’s mother was the official wife of the Grand Emperor, but he didn’t come to love her until it’s too late. It’s the kind of “I could have had it” regret.

  32. Brain addled! No longer sure, whom to ship anymore.

I am really confused about her parentage at the moment. What exactly happens at the end of Once Promised?

Thank you for the frequent updates! Your work on Da Mo Yao spirited me into this mystical realm of Chinese novels. How I wish I could read other novels listed in shushengbar.

    – Lia

  33. I haven’t read the book, but I want to one day. Thanks for this. I just want to ask who the artist for the painting you posted here? It’s a gorgeous painting, and I’d like to use it for my blog thus I need to properly source it. For now, I will just link the painting in my blog with this page of yours. Thanks.

  34. The chapter broke a dam inside me too. Xiao Yao’s life is so incredibly tumultuous and harrowing; losing your family & ability to cultivate powers and IDENTITY at such young age is so traumatizing.
This chapter was poignant and a much needed reconciliation & reunion between Xiao Yao & Zhuan Xu…his love for her broke my heart.
It’s my 3rd time rereading this and all 3 guys love her so so much, each to the best of their abilities, you can never fault any of them too much. I want them all to have a XY.
