Jang Geun Seok and Park Min Young for ICU Chinese Web-movie CF
I get that there isn’t a single entertainer that looks as beautiful or handsome in real life as onscreen. Thanks to the magic of make up and camera lens and editing, what we see is a very idealized version of some pretty good looking people. With that said, seeing Jang Geun Seok looking truly terrible at the airport last week was still quite shocking because of how young he is its hard to wrap my mind around him already preternaturally pushing his body and face to age like that in a short 3 years since he started his “singing and clubbing” other career. Fast forward to this week and I came across the latest China CF for Tong Yi brand fruit drinks featuring Jang Geun Seok and Park Min Young. He actually cleaned up okay but the hard-living lines etched deeper into his face is impossible to miss. Jang Geun Seok has already conquered Japan and has now set his sights on China, and word on the street is that he’s doing pretty well there in terms of building name recognition in the niche Korean entertainer category. I think Park Min Young’s exposure in China comes courtesy of Lee Min Ho‘s City Hunter, but nevertheless she’s taken on this CF with Jang Geun Seok to further make inroads. This is the second series of Tong Yi CFs they have done, but this time it’s a web-movie format that is scored to a Chinese single performed by Jang Geun Seok called “ICU” (as in I See You). Probably the only thing Jang Geun Seok hasn’t worked over is his voice, but hearing him sing in Chinese is pretty cringeworthy because his Mandarin Chinese pronunciation is awful. It makes me appreciate more how Super Junior and some of the other Korean singers who have released Chinese singles must have worked their butts off on their Chinese because they didn’t butcher the language. Here I was trying to read the lyrics to even understand what he was singing. I’ve always thought there was a high probability Jang Geun Seok and Park Min Young would work together at some point, and I’m glad its through this web-movie because they have no chemistry so at least this pairing is been there-done that and hopefully won’t get repeated for a drama or movie down the road. The first picture…if his face was more round…looks a bit like Mingdao, probably not but when I saw it, it reminded me of him.
Decided to watch the clips to see how badly he butchered the language, but I think he’s quite ok (only his 然 made me cringe real bad). Have not heard other K artists sing Mandarin songs, but they usually sound terrible speaking Mandarin in K dramas. It’s a different ball game altogether (song v drama) but more often than not, I don’t know what on earth they are speaking and still have to refer to the subtitles!
The only one K-artists I know who speaks mandarin/chinese fluently is Jang Na Ra.. She sings too 🙂
Try “不敗” by Vanness Wu and 2PM’s Junho. Back then, Mrs Koala had stated that the Korean singer’s Mandarin was excellent. 😉 He has not had any acting gig yet.
Super Junior’s Donghae and Choi Si Won supposedly speak Chinese fluently and both starred in a tw-drama but both were dubbed.
i don’t think donghae and siwon are fluent, but they speak pretty well. the SJ-M members have good mandarin pronunciation in general!
as for jang geunseok, yeah it was mainly the 然 that made me cringe… along with his 亂，讓，and 存. but it was okay overall!
Am I the only one who looks forward to JGS going to the army? I’m really curious to see how he would look 😛 Park Min Young seems to have lost some weight.

Yeah, his singing mandarin isn’t great but with the lyrics and all the English it wasn’t so bad. It is was ok.
I wish he wouldn’t do the pompadour hair and the Elvis suit. It’s not a flattering look for him. Makes his face look puffy and emphasizes his snub nose. He is so naturally attractive and is so charismatic…..He doesn’t need to bling out so much. This guy has it all but he’s doing it all wrong. I confess I do like him in eyeliner.
Look at PMY’s nose ….It’s done so badly. I have nothing against plastic surgery but I think it should be subtle. Don’t plonk a nose on a face like that without taking into consideration the symmetry and proportions of the face.
Has Park Min Young ever had good chemistry with someone or have I missed something?

Agreed. She is pretty bland when it comes to chemistry. But it’s all in the due of the beholder. So there probably is something, I just am not seeing it.
I think it’s time to for JGS to change his clothes and hair style…I really miss his clean look.

Siiigh. Guys, dont take this the wrong way, I absolutely love JGS and especially his deep husky timbre. But I really am so annoyed with seeing him with long hair and a guitar. The guitar I can probably stomach if he lose the hair.I dont know what girl is lying to him, but the hotness of his locks are completely over for me now. It only looks hot in MMM. But, its whatever that floats his boat at the end of the day 🙂

So I’m not the only one that noticed JGS has definitely done these scenes before. At the end I was thinking….isn’t this just the end of You’re Beautiful? Except for the clothes. I was trying to laugh, but I was slightly ashamed for JGS. I don’t know why I am when he’s perfectly fine with it.
But that hair! Please can he just go waaay back to his Do Re Mi hair? Can we get a few photoshoots with good hair before he has to chop it all off for military service?
I ask for good hair b/c I remember Taeyang in Big Bang had the same hair for years, people wanted it to change, he did – and now I can look at him anymore. Be careful what you wish for.

I’m old enough to be his mom, but I still adore him. (Not in a creepy way.) There is something about him that just makes me smile. I do agree with most of you – MS will do him good. He’ll come back more grounded and mature. I can’t wait.

Lose the hair! It no longer has any appeal. I am willing to bet there is no military in this person’s future. Maybe I am being rude and wrong but he should come out of the closet ’cause there is no masculinity left there. So happy for his fans who do not care what others say and love him to the death but I see nothing worth admiring anymore as he had my heart and fan-ship once. So sad. He is rich though and he probably doesn’t care.IMO.
I had a feeling we’ll see this pair some day (before JGS put his acting career on a hiatus). Well, I feel most of the time chemistry is luck.. and I just find her acting blank and wide eyed, so in my opinion she doesn’t have chemistry with most actors.

Agreed! He is the only Korean actor that has become this succesful with his music, has 1 mini album & 2 full Japanese albums – all reached #1 in Oricon Chart in its 1st day of release. Hats off to JKS for paving the way for his co-actors not to hesitate showcasing their other talents if they have!
Agree. If a “kid” (I’m old…) who’s not my style at all can make me into a fan for the first time in my life (not in a creepy way, pls), I really give him a lot of credit. He’s very talented, but also very unique. Not the cookie cut k-pop artist I often see.

I don’t understand why people bother so much about his singing career??? He’s just living his life the way he wanted…not like some Kpop idols where they’re like an item that the company advertise in certain way. They don’t get to chose their music type or their outfit…to me some kpop idols are like robots that the company has invented. At JGS is free to pursuit whatever music he wants and wear whichever make him feel comfortable…I enjoy his music…it’s funny and free spirit!
Yes, i agree. If idols can try to pursue an acting career, why can’t actors try singing. It is their life. It is almost impossible for actors to become singers in Korea, while it is so much easier for singers to become actors in Korea. If they can’t do it in their own country, why deny them a chance to do it in other countries. If they release an album, at least they will have something to perform during FM and concert.
JKS is not the only actor who try to sing. Lee Byung Hun, Kim Bum, lee jun ki and releasing his album soon Lee Min Ho etc all release albums in Japan. There don’t do it as frequent only because the albums are not selling as well as JKS. I am sure if there are selling more than 10,000 k per single or album, their companies will also get them to release singles and albums every year.

I thought JGS nailed his Mandarin… Almost perfect enunciation. The boy may need to join the military to earn some respect. Is it just me or Park Min Young looks sooo perfect, she looks just like many other Korean actresses, like a Stepford Korean actress. Kinda hard to tell who is who, maybe too much plastic surery? Whereas, Park Shin Hye and Yoon Eun Hye look more unique.
