Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum in Talks for KBS Drama Secret

Can someone at KBS puhlease get their act together and lock down a cast for this drama ASAP. The Blade and Petal (truly astonishingly amazing) has just finished airing episode 8 and at a scheduled 20 episodes is slated to wrap up September 5th. Which means its follow up drama Secret is airing September 12th, which is less than 6 weeks away in case anyone over at KBS needs me to count for them. With today’s news that the network is close to landing Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum as the leads, at least there is some movement on the production but sadly neither has confirmed yet. The pictures in this post showing Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum getting married are for a series of CFs they did last year for Himart, so at least we know they look good together and seem to have chemistry. One can never tell with these CF thingies. Secret will be directed by the PD who did Dream High (also a KBS drama), with a script written by a first time screenwriter that won this year’s drama script writing competition. I give it the benefit of the doubt that it must have some merit to win, but I already dock it points because it comes with the lame-O title of Secret. In the world of K-dramas, only if the drama called itself Love could it be even more obvious about its story.

Ji Sung’s character is a second generation cold chaebol who doesn’t believe in love until he meets the heroine played by Hwang Jung Eum. That was the description that went along with the news reports last week when he was being courted. Do you guys want to hear the rumored plot? Prepare for some headspinning guffaws. Apparently Hwang Jung Eum’s leading lady is a woman who takes the rap for the second male lead when he causes a traffic accident that kills a guy. She goes to prison for him because she luuurves him. Whatever. The guy that is killed is the leading man’s younger brother. He seeks out the leading lady when she gets out of prison to exact more vengeance on her, except he falls in love with her and then finds out she did not cause the accident. While the leading lady is in prison, the second male lead falls for the second female lead and marries her rather than waiting for his girlfriend who is in prison on his behalf. Sterling dude, I see. The second female lead happens to be the ex-girlfriend of the leading man and is still nursing a broken heart that he never loved her back. Seriously? This script won an award? Imma definitely checking it out just to see how the executed product stacks up against what reads like the successor to all the lame makjang love quadrangles that have gone before it.

Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum are both alright with me. I like them when I like their characters (Protect the Boss) or the drama they are starring in is good (Giant), otherwise I have no desire to watch a drama just because they are in it. With his real life girlfriend Lee Bo Young starring in successive hit dramas, I think Ji Sung is due for a hit of his own just to balance things out at home.
