The Marvels Bombs at the Box Office Which Means Park Seo Joon Isn’t the Only Laughingstock From the Film

When Hollywood comes calling for most Asian stars is always an opportunity impossible to pass by. For Park Seo Joon I wished he would have passed right on by the recent MCU movie The Marvels because hoo boy was the movie so chaotic and mediocre (and bombed in its first weekend at the box office) but his role in particular was just cringe bad. Not his performance but the character and his entire planet of singing and dancing beings were just silly and intended to be kinda cheesy. The interlude was short and a set up for the planet to be attacked just so the Marvels can fight back. To think he put up with a douchey hairstyle and cabaret level outfits just to be so pointless. Honestly, any random actor could have played this throwaway role why hire one of South Korea’s popular young actors for it.

  2. Idk if Disney is intentionally sabotaging Marvel or what’s has been going on but if I were an actor I’d stay clear of those movies for the next couple of years. Besides Spider-Man, black panther, and shangchi and the 10 rings. Every movie after end game has sucked. Good thing too because Disney should be boycotted. The writers strike is still on going.

  3. Hollywood exposure, who knows?
Why even come to Hollywood, when, in recent history, the best & brightest of movies & dramas have come from South Korea?
When a drama like “Moving” can give one a different take on ordinary human beings with superpowers while Hollywood continues the outlandish costumes & gimmicky plots … sad, when imagination dies.

    • Agreed. While most of MCU are forgettable for me, I was impressed by Moving. I watched quite a few of MCU as a guardian for juniors in my household. I’m not motivated to watch MCU anymore after they grew out of the series. LOL. But I’ll be interested in watching a Moving sequel.

    • Uh…because Hollywood is a financial behemoth while the Korean film industry has been struggling? Parasite was 4 years ago, and Korea itself is too small. People want money and exposure.

      • Ah true, no much money going around in korea acting industry. Chinese stars make way more than them, even when they can’t act

    • LOL this is one of the most delusional comments I’ve ever seen on this site. Most Kdramas and Kmovies are boring or garbage. They’re not that special.

    • Best and brightest when it comes to quality but still doesn’t give them the kind of global exposure that Hollywood brings. Yoo Tae-Oh has been grinding as a second male lead or character actor in SK for years but only got widespread recognition after he went Hollywood with Past Lives. For all the hype Moving has from kdrama fans in Asia, it hasn’t gotten that much traction globally even though it is on Hulu.

      • Moving is the Squid Game in 2023 according to the reports from several streaming sites across including Neflix, Disney+, and Hulu etc. Moving is the most watched K dramas this year. It’s not only storming Asian market. But I’m talking about globally the most watched in the genre of international dramas in 2023.

FYI. Moving actually beat out series that hail from the Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universes also produced by the same producer, Disney+ according to Rolling Stone.

      • @Somebody

Lol Moving is a Disney+ exclusive in Asia which is a platform that has less than a third of Netflix subscribers in the same area. It was on Hulu in the US.

Just for reference from the Rolling Stone article you mentioned:

“In Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Moving has become the streamers’ most-watched series, full stop — yes, it beat out series that hail from the Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universes.”

Variety, which called it the next the next breakout it after Squid Games as you said also reported that it was a hit in those territories. Not quite as global as what ‘Hollywood’ normally connotes as those same territories are where kdramas are already quite popular.

      • @Popgo,

I don’t disagree with you though about Moving’s global popularity compared with Hollywood scale. Yes, I incorrectly said it’s also streamed on Netflix that is actual the rival of Disney+. Nonetheless, Moving did take the superhero market in Asian Pacific region by storm that used to be just dominated by Hollywood. You can’t just dismiss its hit success outside SK. As a result, big American companies like Netflix and Disney+ will continue to bet on K dramas.

Also Netflix shows weekly top 10 international (non-English) dramas on its website. There are always several K dramas in this weekly list. Specifically Squid Game on top 1 of 2023 most watched international dramas as of April. I have no other updated data up to this point. My point: you can’t dismiss the increasing global popularity and market share of K drama outside SK. Many C drama fans has been claiming K drama has become less popular cos they prefer to watch C drama now. LOL. They were always excited to see K actors or K dramas flop outside SK. It’s just to the opposite of their claim and wish.

    • Plss Hollywood is still #1 in terms of exposure, scripts, pay, everything. Korea who and where? The majority of American and international audiences arent even checking for Korean content like that. Moving? Looks like a cheap spinoff of any Western superhero movie that had been done to death 1000x before. The west has tonnes of that already why watch another similar movie in a language they dont even understand?

  4. Disney’s “The Marvels” took home the top spot at the box office despite its lackluster opening. News just out!

As long as there are kids and teenagers in the US, Marvel will never die. LOL

    • Marvel have a target market…and Christmas is coming. Holiday spirit is in the air…I too will love to watch a Marvel movie for the experience. I grew up collecting thousands of marvel comics… I will watch a marvel movie…I am part of their target market. Reviews means nothing to me, just my own review matters.

      • It had been a ritual for me to take kids from my household and their school friends to theaters for Marvel every year over a 10 year span. LOL. I was reluctant at first cos comics had never been my thing but I was obliged. The disappointed opening of The Marvels in box office isn’t a huge deal for the MCU studio. It was just a weekend. But American media surely would make it big to attract readership.

      • @Somebody

Better not to speak if you have no clue what you’re talking about. The Marvels is set to lose upwards of $300 million at the box office.

      • @Rina, I’m certainly not an expert on filming financing. I have no access to MCU’s financial statements. I don’t think you do either. LOL. Therefore let’s both be open minded to the end game of The Marvels. I’m indifferent to how the movie will fair commercially at the end, not a fan of PSJ or MCU though. But like Star Wars, Marvel has a huge cult following for DECADES! So, nobody including you should dismiss MCU per one weekend box office only. Nonetheless, you talked as if you were the CFO managing the finance of MCU though. LMAO.

      • @Anne, LOL. I work from home FULL TIME and have 2/3 of the whole day to goof around with keyboard gibberish like your comments.

    • @Rina

She doesn’t know anything about financials and thinks living in the USA and Google qualifies her to make “statements” about it. My advice is don’t bother, you will lose some brain cells.

      • LOL @Oof, I’m a certified pro in a very exclusive financial sector. It took years of exams to get credentials in my profession that is highly respected. I don’t talk nonsense with school girls or ignoramuses that have a fetish to dismiss people but actually expose themselves airheads.

Yes, unlike unreliable Baidu, Google is the easiest and credible channel to provide good education for the uneducated and the ill-informed, all depending on if you even have ability to do proper searches and research. LOL

      • LOL @Oof, by your logic then folks like you who’re apparently outside the States should even shut up whenever anything to do with the country is touched. Since you don’t think I’m entitled to my own opinion about the movie as a US citizen and a past long-term MCU goer, How the heck were you even qualified to comment about The Marvels given that you’re not even in the States? Hmmmmm. Better learn to get used to free speech before waging a fight online!

      • @Rina, LMAO. You Steve Jobs or not, I’m who I am with my credentials certified. That won’t change. Some fans, specifically Chinese fans outside the US are always incoherent when referring to the US. LOL

      • @somebody LOLLL certified pro in an exclusive financial sector in your dreams maybe. If u were u wont be posting on any kpop or kdrama site like this one, u wouldn’t have the time for it. U sound like any run of the mill kdrama/kpop fan that has no life n has never touched grass in awhile. It’s time to log off and get out of the house yo

      • @Anne, only butthurt Chinese fans like you who love gibberish would dismiss K-ent and K drama. Your uncontrollable mental gymnastics wouldn’t land you on floor properly anyhow. LMAO. My job requires to work on plenty of professional reports including executive summaries. Do you think skimming casual blogs with a lot of nonsense commented by brainless ppl like you, some of which I just skipped, would take up time? Writing a few lines off hand is a piece of cake for me. Why not? It’s entertaining while I take breaks since I work from home full time. I got plenty to goof around off work. 2/3 of the day belongs to myself. LOL

      • @Anne, I work from home FULL TIME and have 2/3 of the whole day to goof around with keyboard gibberish like your comments! LOL

  5. “The Marvels” cost about $300 million to make and market and arrived to $47 million in domestic sales (per NYT). An unprecedented failure in the history of MCU. Sorry for PSJ! Not an impressive debut in Hollywood. Sigh!

Nonetheless, MCU will continue to have a spot in American box office as long as there are still kids and teenagers in the States. LOL. One flop isn’t a big deal for the studio while they are also experimenting many new ideas for future projects. I’ve never seen Asian actors debut successfully in Hollywood, be they main leads or in supporting roles. Crystal Liu failed and this for PSJ too.

    • So they need around 500 mil to profit?

Btw yeah mulan was a disappointment, like what did the production team were thinking? They made mulan into superhero born child lmao

Feels like they are less sincere now, just pumping out whatever worked in franchise. If they were going for mulan they should have got chinese historian to help them, considering they thought they would be banking in chinese market. Everything was so inaccurate that the animation was far better

    • “as long as there are still kids and teenagers in the States”

sorry but kids and teenagers aren’t into movie franchises that make entertainment feel like homework. Apparently your “credentials” don’t prevent you from being defensive over some stupid movie or seeing common sense.

(it was fine before Avengers: Endgame, now the Marvel studio made it so we can’t watch a movie without watching 243689392 tv shows on a separate subscription channel)

      • Where in my comments are defending The Marvels? Don’t randomly put your misreading in my mouth. LOL. I said it’s too early to predict the end game of the movie yet although it looked like a flop in box office at the get-go.

Ppl are butthurt and resort to meaningless sarcasm, e.g., questioning my professional credentials, trying to deny facts that are true but not in their favor. Immature and irrational! Keyboard nonsense has no authority to revoke my pro qualifications though. LOL. My credentials are recorded in house of the trade organization.

      • @somebody – “too early to predict the end game of the movie yet though it looked like a flop in box office at the get-go”

lol it’s a flop. The box office numbers don’t lie – $47 million opening against a $200 million budget and poor word of mouth/Cinemascore = The Marvels is a huge flop and even the Hollywood trade magazines including The Hollywood Reporter, which track the financial prospects of these films, are calling it a flop and a meltdown.

Sorry your “credentials” didn’t teach you to recognise reality and not be pointlessly defensive over some subpar Disney-owned movie franchise.

  6. You all too caught up in your feelings of wanting either to mold into having your bias to be a top dog or tear down everyone who is not in “the best thing ever since sliced bread”, when it comes to those popular actors. Like you guys are sitting there with pitchforks, just waiting for them to be in something so called “bad”. Why you all acting so damn worked up over Park Seo Jun’s little adventure to have some experience and fun with a Hollywood movie? Any korean actor desperate and happy to take small roles like this, to be part of big Hollywood. LBH spend years playing small and unimportant, unmemorable roles in Hollywood, despite being one the most accomplished korean actor ever. Ma Dong Seok’s role in Eternals wasn’t bigger or flashier than Seo Jun’s, when he was high on his back to back successful movies. Jennie played itsy-bitsy-tiny role in The Idol, while having huge fanbase and international internet recognition with her group. And all that, because those actors see Hollywood as an important experiment and experience in their careers? Pretty sure, they well aware that their roles small and not impactful, yet they also know it’s a great opportunity to have some experience in Hollywood. Say what you want about it, but Hollywood is a standard and great school. And all actors around the world want to be part of it and experience it one way or another. Also it’s blatant stupid and borderline ridiculous to make fun of Koreans, who take roles like this, but at the same breath be okay with the likes for example Jeff Goldblooms being in same strange outfits, hairstyles and make ups and never make fun of him for that. Or never fault Chris Hemsworth for playing fat Thor or in some dumb comedy acting like a clown. Let me ever (never) understand the logic of this type of blog posts and people commenting here something sarcastic thinking they’re oh so smart (no).
You all basically deep into idolizing or objectifying korean actors and actresses, so anything less than suit and dress with blurred filters makes you all go crazy. Or you all just enjoying tearing down anyone popular, because you all just jealous and want your bias to be the best. So all see opportunities in this type of scenarios to badmouth and bring others down. Anyway it’s all simply pathetic.

    • It is really about having fun with these artiste. It is not as if they will leave and pick up and move to US to work from now on… Park Seo Joon had fun, that is the most valuable experience for him. Marvel lives forever, all his future generation will remember just how amazing he is.. That to me is priceless.

Marvel is not expecting Park Seo Joon to make this movie a hit. They just need a reputable good Asian actor to take the role.

    • I think you have a point there. It would seem that Asian fans are too harsh on their own stars. White stars can do whatever they like, dress up however they want, act however they like and everyone is praising them. Jeff Goldbloom is a good example.

    • Good points! It’s legit to wonder a lot of immature ppl making fun of Korean celebrities are Chinese drama fans who are butthurt to see K actors make a foray into bigger international stage. They would take any chance to have a pile-on over K actors. They would also have similar reactions to those who are in favor of Kdrama over Cdrama.

  8. I am in love with Loki on Disney+. They seem to have created a great niche for short series – Wanda Vision and Loki being two of the best that has come out of Hollywood/Marvel/Disney recently. They aim to bring more of these short-format shows to audiences, too, so all is not lost.

  9. I’ve seen plenty of actors from all over the world jump at the chance to work in Hollywood and why wouldn’t they. The pay is probably solid, they might luck out and not be in a crap project and, more importantly, they might end up meeting people and making connections and end up with more opportunities down the line. Does that happen often? No, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Rain was in Speed Racer and ended up headlining Ninja Assassin because of who he was working with.

    • That’s so true! Think about Michelle Yeoh who wouldn’t have achieved such a high status if she had not started her exposure in Hollywood 20 yrs ago. Who knows! Disappointing box office is one thing, long-term career development of an actor is another story. I won’t conveniently and ignorantly dismiss an actor just for one single underwhelming open box office. Will see if more opportunities will be open for PSJ to get other projects in the West.

  10. One expects to be most glorious special guest star but except for Tony leung and mostly hk stars, the rest are more most glorified kelefes. This for instance. Captain marvel has never been popular tho.

    • Agree, I don’t think Captain Marvel was a fan favorite. She doesn’t even do much in Avengers or at least hang out with other Marvel characters.

  11. The movie and the role might be meh but I think asians arent stupid when they go through the scipt and read their role. Maybe its for the experience, the exposure or even for networking. Theres a tradeoff and I’m pretty sure they weighed it before deciding to appear in the movie.

  12. this movie is tanking due to, (not in chronological order)
1- lack of star power- the actress and the rest of the casts
2- Marvel fatigue- most Marvel movies produced after the end game performed less than expected.
    3- Cringey plot

my 2 cents from the movie reviews, I have not watched it yet and not going to. lol

  13. Back then , in 2008 i enjoyed Marvel movies ( even if i’m more into thrillers and classic movies) Iron man , The guardians of galaxy , but after Disney took the game i dropped . Too much FX ,serials streaming, I lost any interest and the movies lost their “magical” touch , sad because actors as Robert Downey Jr , Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd
…were really great and they seemed to enjoy playing their character , now MCU it’s more like a milk cow !!! i’m happy that Robert Zemeckis didn’t want to make reboots of Back to the future , not like George Lucas with Star Wars( for me it killed the magic of the 1st trilogy) same goes for Indiana jones , the 3 movies were the best, Ghostbusters, the actors were so good in their role and the alchemy was there , not like in the lastest ones . But who can beat Bill Murray / Dan Aykroyd / the late Harold Ramis .

    • I think i can be at ease with classic movies of Billy Wilder, John Mankiewicz, Ernst Lubitsch, Douglas Sirk, …as younger ones don’t know who they are, Disney, streaming sites will not give money to make reboots !

  14. Captain Marvel is probably the least popular franchise in the MCU, so the lackluster box office isn’t surprising. I’m not sure why, but Brie Larson also seemed to have a lot of negative rumors about her not getting along with the other MCU actors/actresses as well.

With the writer’s strike, there was little to no promotion. Marvel’s style is also getting old. I used to enjoy the humor, but it’s getting repetitive. Even in Guardians 3, I felt like half the movie they were basically just screaming at each other and calling each other names trying to be funny.

I like the short series much more like Loki. Tom Hiddleston is a brilliant actor.
