Blossoms Shanghai Wins Best Drama at the 2024 Magnolia Awards with Hu Ge and Zhou Xun Taking Home the Best Acting Awards Respectively

The Shanghai Film Festival wrapped up this week with the awards portion giving out the 2024 Magnolia Awards. The biggest winner was Blossoms Shanghai taking home both Best Drama (TV show) and Best Actor for Hu Ge. There wasn’t a sweep in the top as Zhou Xun won Best Actress over Tang Yan who may have had the comeback buzz but probably in the end still felt like a newbie to the serious drama veterans. Blossoms had both buzz and prestige and continued to reward Hu Ge for being uber selective with his acting projects, doing very few but picking the right ones that payoff.

  1. Well, there are folks saying Hu Ge and Zhou Xun are overrated actors. But when they say who their faves are, I only can laugh🤣. Congrats to them anyways.

  2. Tang Yang made an impressive effort in Blossoms Shanghai, kudos to her. I liked her work 🙂

But there’s no way she is at Zhou Xun level in acting. No hate intended, just pointing out their levels.

    • I didnt see the two dramas nominated, but this award is not an achievement award, they were judged for their roles. Zhou Xun is a much better actress than Tang Yang, but if the later had a better role and acting she should have won. No veterans should judge her for her past works.Inanother note, chinese dramaland need to stop giving preference to these “serious” roles so they can explore genres like horror and sci fi.

      • @Lizzy8 Who don’t know is about their roles? 🤣 Her acting in Blossoms Shanghai is not better than Zhou Xun’s in Imperfect Victim. That’s the main point.

      • It would be tough for C filming industry to explore horror and sci fi genres with quality writing thanks to censorship.

Sci fi and thrillers entail unlimited imagination but Chinese writers are playing safe to get their scripts approved by the authority.

  4. One chinese drama critic mentioned that because blossom shanghai is a shanghai show and the awards, which is hosted by the shanghai committe so they awarded their own show. I think is true in certain sense since some of the category could have won by other shows that also very good.

  5. I am happy! There is a Wang Xing Yue scandal happening right now. Looooooooool! I’m dying to see the reactions of his very vocal boot lickers (@somebody @drea @yui @&c) on this site.

  6. Everyone knew Blossoms and Hu Ge would win. Shanghai drama with a Shanghai actor, in a Shanghai awards.

Magnolia is open about prioritising Shanghai works and people. They even stated it.

    She was amazing in IV!

  7. Although BS and IV are two overrated dramas, I’m happy that HG and ZX won the awards. They both are actors I admire. I don’t think it’s gonna add any significant credits to their already impressive resumes. These awards are just like a small cherry on the cake for them. LOL.

  8. LOL. What’s the point for WXY antis to mention his name in an irrelevant blog? To create even more buzz around WXY cos not enough yet to surpass your faves? LOL. Ok, as you wish, let’s go! LOL

The only commotion around WXY in the news is about the mishap his studio staff created by posting clips of uncut scenes in the Double on social media, much to Yu Zeng’s chagrin. YZ blew up cos those uncut scenes implied the Double actually had a sad ending and Duke Su indeed died in the final bloody battle. That’s a start contrast to the ending YZ perhaps manipulated after seeing the huge success of the Double by adding an extra short ep to please fans of the Double. LOL. I’m so amused.

Koala, if this intrigues you, please dig in a bit. Fans would definitely chime in with all different perspectives. LOL.

      • They may feel their faves are threatened. I see this happened all the time in C-ent. Popularity comes and goes pretty quickly. There were always up and coming new stars who were the talks of the town in C-ent each year but the hype quickly dissipated. It’s yet to see if WXY’s rising popularity can sustain. Antis panic just for nothing. LOL.

      • @Somebody Wow. If their faves are threatened that means they aren’t good. I honestly don’t know much about C-Ent. I’m kinda new watching C-dramas but from what I’m seeing in The Double, he has a pretty good presence. I’m on ep 8.

      • I hope you’re enjoying the drama so far. It’s getting more and more interesting later on.

      • Oh no, an adult has a sex life! What am I supposed to do with this brand new information?!

      • @Haha Nah. Those are rumors, like most things in C-Ent. His agency has already denied it and has indicated they will take legal action. LOL. Although if it were real, how does it affect you? Or did you think he is a purist boy and you wanted to keep such image in your head for your own benefit? LMAO.

    • @Somebody I am definitely doing it! I have already advanced to ep 18. There are plot holes early on, but the weight of the artistic aspects as the series progresses may make me forget about them hahaha. Ji Shuran and Princess Wanning have outstanding actings from the moment they appear on screen. I grew up watching Joe Chen in my native Taiwan, so it is exciting to see her playing a mother in an actually good production!

I don’t have the impression that Duke Su is going to have a character development, but I am pleased with Wang Xing Yue’s charisma.

Although it is important to recognize the writing and the work of the cast. I would like to point out the good direction, I would write paragraphs about it haha.

  9. Tang Yan was so good in Blossoms Shanghai. The good thing is that role allowed her to venture into a more serious career, so it’s still a win long term. At the end of the day, these awards are very arbitrary and there’s a lot of internal politics behind it, so fans shouldn’t take it too seriously.

  10. Can’t see why Zhou Xun’s performance in “Imperfect Victim” deserved an award. I’ve seen it twice and was frustrated both times by the ambiguity of her character. Several of the other actors did deliver sharp performances but hers left me cold. It may have been partly the character, the lady lawyer who can’t make up her mind which side she’s on.

  11. I bet on Tang Yan winning due to the big female lead incident, but my guess was off. Perhaps it could be because they awarded the Best Actor to Hu Ge already. A nomination is still a win for her though.

And congrats to Zhou Xun and Hu Ge for winning Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

  12. Gotta say Hu Ge looks much older than his age, he has movie-star vibes, like Tony Leung or Louis Koo, but they are of an older generation.
Zhou Xun has been around much longer, but she looks lovely here, she looks good with rounder face and glasses.
