So I’m going to give As Beautiful as You another chance after learning that it’s the first big second half of 2024 streaming hit with modern C-dramas. The drama starring Tan Song Yun and Xu Kai wrapped with an average 6.7 Douban ratings but did really good streaming viewership numbers that industry insiders are calling it a hit. Attributing it to Tan Song Yun’s streak of delivering ratings and also giving Xu Kai the bounce he needed after a string of merely mediocre viewership dramas.

No superb looks can replace real talent…Tan Song Yun has talent to help thaw stone block actors like Xu Kai, Allen Ren, Song Weilong.
I bet anyone working with her, producers, acting casts, crew must feel a sense of relief.
She may not suit all roles but she is good at picking suitable roles for herself.
She is believable in all the roles she has taken on so far. I’ve never been disappointed in any of her dramas which I’ve watched. Both she and Xu Kai delivered in this drama, they made both their lovey-dovey and quarrel scenes look real and believable.
Tan Songyun quietly does well. She has very good ratings on her shows with little mediaplay. She gets dragged for her visuals but she is the master of chemistry. Young actors or old actors she is shippable with evryone. I never thought i would like Song Weilong on a role and she made me like their pairing. Xu Kai is lucky, his other modern pairing with YZ was so boring, this one is cliché but entertaining.
She just needs a costume drama hit.
exactly, TSY is really superb actress
Does she really get criticism for her looks?!that’s odd😶🤔 I actually find her very pretty and charming, she looks good with different hairstyles and with/without makeup also.
@zee: Yes but a lot of actors who worked with her say she is a very pretty person and more so in person than you would expect. I think because her face is rounder than most is where she gains her criticism. These days thin is still in high demand but she defies that so who knows maybe they just jealous she is able to succeed despite this.
@Rero Actually the criticisms are mostly about her nose and body proportions. Actresses with round faces appeal to the general public. But honestly, I feel that those criticisms are mostly from jealous fans of other actresses. All that matters to the general public for female leads are good acting and being relatable/friendly-looking.
douban rating is useless….its just a tool for the hater and those who try to extort money from the production team. Look at the streaming number
Can’t disagree with you. Whenever I saw DOUBAN, I thought jokes coming. LOL.
I wasnt talking about douban ratings or streaming numbers, i was talking about TV ratings. TSY has dramas with good ratings.
There seems to be a bunch of pretty petite FLs in Cdramaland punching above their weight and making their MLs look good. This drama is nothing to write home about but I really liked her. She made me believe in her story. Also the FLs of TPR and FYH. Nice to see real actors getting their due instead of glamorous inert mannequins ruining the dramas.
I wouldn’t say this was anywhere close to a hit in China. It did fine but that’s about it. The only “industry insider” who would call this a hit is someone related to the crew. Also the plot was very messy so that rating is pretty much ok.
Coincidentally I picked up this drama out of boredom last evening and binged 4 eps, rare for me bcos most of the time I failed to proceed after 2-3 eps. I’ve been in the mood for soft romance and there’s nothing much to watch nor anything from others’ recommendations. I won’t say this one is as addictive as the Double. The plot is tropey and all the backdrops/development are as fluffy but predictable as possible like so many C idol dramas. Nonetheless, TSY is the gem of the drama. It’s kinda magical that she made Xu Kai convincing in their relationship that’s interesting to watch. Last modern romance drama of XK as the ML I watched was the boring noona romace with Yang Mi; he was more lifeless than a heck piece of dry wood by my fireplace over there. LMAO. At this point, I’m curious how she would break up with her bf on the talks for marriage and ended up being with XK. No spoilers please. Let me see how far I can stick to this drama. I did doze off over some scenes and didn’t feel missing anything. LOL.
Was that a hit ? 🤔 really ? Seems it was in the bleh zone numberwise. Nobody mention that show anywhere on the net
I guess koala is trying to say ,this show is recieved well by viewers and it seems in c ent, there might be certain reasons a show is considered a hit.
it’s a rating champion for Hunan channel so far this year I heard.
I really like it, although i skipped all the side couple scenes and wished they didnt make Han Ting too much of a simp in the end. Still it’s really enjoyable because of the acting and chemistry of the leads. TSY has always been fabulous but Xu Kai was meh to me until this drama. He carries the CEO role very well. Imo he is a better actor than Yang Yang, Song Weilong…and is more versatile.
The feeling which I get from Xu Kai is that he works well if he’s comfortable with his partner actress. I actually think he acted pretty well too in his previous drama with Yang Mi, his role’s personality was meant to be passive and chill. And yes, I agree he’s a better actor than Yang Yang and Song Weilong.
Thanks, Koala for posting about As Beautiful As You (aka You Are More Beautiful Than Starlight). I really enjoyed watching the drama and would definitely recommend it. Some may consider it a slow burn, but I believe the gradual build-up adds to the excitement when they get together, their romance, the impact of the story. In an interview, Xu Kai mentioned that there are a thousand kisses. At first, I thought it might be an exaggeration, but after comparing it to the usual amount of kisses in kdramas and cdramas, I appreciated his description. It was refreshing to see so many kisses, looks of affection, and quality time spent together. The chemistry between Tan Song Yun and Xu Kai is fantastic and makes the drama even more enjoyable.
I preferred this drama than Best Choice Ever. At least, the parents were not invasive and the story was about the ML and the FL (even if I didn’t like how she ran away).
I really like Xu Kai…but can I be honest and say he literally plays the same character in all dramas😅…The last time I really enjoyed a drama with him was The Lengend with Bai lu….after I watch him with Cheng Xiao, Yang Mi then with Yang Zi… and wondered what the heck was going on…He’s always this…Cold, Cool, Handsome, perfect, CEO type of guy…is he type casted…help me yall…I know fans will back him regardless…but dang he’s just the same in all dramas now…yall he can even stand and don’t move and it won’t matter…because hes handsome and we know how that sells…but is it always gonna be like this…things need to change before he falls into the Yang Yang route…
I miss his lively and fun side from Arsenal Milatary Academy. It’s still my favorite role for him.
I’m watching once upon a time in Lingjian mountain and found it to be quite funny (in a slaptick comedy way). He’s lively and goofy here too and I dont think Yang Yang can ever act like this so imo XK has more potential.
Xu Kai had that fun personality in the first quarter of Wonderland of Love (his character, I mean) and then it all went down coz the stakes got higher onn the story and there was no more Fun Li Ni. :/ It’s there but it depends on what character Xu Kai is given, really..
@Trina, agreed. It depends on what roles were given to him AND whom he costarred with. I’m also fond of him in the first half of Wonderland of Love. He’s totally wooden in Falling into Your Smile. He’s nonexistent, looked pretty bored LOL and boring in each scene in She and Her Perfect Husband. THIS, is the best of XK I’ve watched so far IMO.
This drama is getting boring and made common mistakes with noticeable weakness of most of the C dramas. I’m running out of steam to continue watching.
The startup storylines were as fictional and stupid as it could be. I can’t take the corporate tropes seriously. It’s 100% idol-ish. I laughed at these make-believe child plays.
Good for XK though. I found him charming in the drama and his acting has improved. I’ve only had fun watching Xu Kai’s extremely beautiful face lately. LOL. Nonetheless, his CEO role was reduced to a prince charming always coming to rescue his girl on his white horse in due time. LOL. So, it all falls into cliché.
Maybe because you have a certain preference for dramas hence you pick up the same thing to watch hence you saw him in the same type of role? Because if pick up Once Lingjian Mountain, Wonderland of Love and Arsenal Military Academy is playing the same character then…
