Slow Burn Revenge and Romance Period C-drama The Glory with Chen Du Ling and Xin Yun Lai Bit by Bit Increasing Heat Index and Views
So the slow burn rise in buzz and views for period C-drama The Glory may just match the pace and storytelling of the actual drama itself. Tencent premiered The Glory starring Chen Du Ling and Xin Yun Lai last week and it’s methodically building up a stronger and stronger showing and in the most recent sign hit 28,000 heat index within the platform. Industry insiders are saying this drama is looking like the steady one way rise of the last Tencent hit Blossom a few months ago, though Blossom increased to become a hit at a slightly faster pace than The Glory. Viewer reviews are on the negative side with the three big complaints are that this is a fake female empowerment story since the female lead needs the male lead’s help frequently, the male lead Xin Yun Lai is ugly, and the female lead Chen Du Ling has very wooden and limited acting. But it appears the strong veteran showing and the measured revenge and plotting story line is engaging the broader audience and Tencent is seeing new viewers join everyday. It’s still too early to say if this drama will level up either or both leads but that should be clear in another week or so.

This is my first drama of CDL that i could pass through ep 10 and now currently on the latest episode. I prefer other actresses to play her character but well, stil bearable.
I like the ML. He looks fine to me. Probably bcuz im not so into ‘handsome’ guys, but men like him and Ding Yuxi are my type. Also, i enjoy his performances. Both actors have decent chemistry.
I’ve read the novel, but prefer the drama. Give it a try guys.
This drama is not as solid as Blossom nor as addicting as The Double
I dropped the Blossom. Didn’t like the leads.
So there you go. Different preferences.
I think the acting for The Double was fantastic but the female lead looked too old for the character’s age.
Of these 3 this drama has actually been well cast.
Definitely reminded me of The Double. Blossom is good but the storyline doesn’t keep me hooked like this one does. Strangely for me, I was just as addicted to this one compared to the Double. Maybe even a little more. I binge watched 13 episodes in one day. I think I like the directing more in this one (not too many of the intently looking at the camera stuff in the Double). The storyline is just as interesting for me. The ML of The Double is my favorite out of the bunch. But this ML isn’t bad. The FL and her mom have some of the best scenes when they are together.
Yah I saw it gained popularity right now but I am waiting till it finishes to watch. This will probably bring Cheng du Ling more roles considering the acknowledgment and maybe the main lead. Not sure if it will elevate them so much but something is better than nothing. It might be too soon to say so though till it finishes lol. You know Chinese dramas and their endings and finishing touches always shows the outcome.
Way overrated show. I honestly don’t get its popularity. I just don’t get it. I think neither lead actor/actress is showing lead potential here and neither the story nor the characters are very likeable or interesting (except maybe the mom and her ex-fiance, they tugged at my heartstrings I admit). Plus many keep linking this drama to the The Double and I understand that comparison even less. This hype is so confusing.
It might be a question of taste, but many feel that The Glory is indeed the better drama among the two.
the story is weak and a bit disjointed. ML is not as captivating as Duke Su. FL is ok
The storyline in The Glory is much stronger, more realistic and more tightly woven than The Double. There are no glaring plot holes that require you to shut off your logical thinking as there is in The Double. For me, a good plot trumps everything else, and for this reason alone, I would say that The Glory is better than The Double. It is grittier, but much more plausible and feels more real.
Just could never get into Chen Duling. She’s gorgeous but seems so lifeless. But Xin Yunlai is worse. He has neither looks nor acting skills.
Well.
Not that addicting and the story is quite disjointed. I’m really surprised how intellectual and smart ladies are in ancient Chinese dramas. She seemed to look the same also with her character in that other period drama. The ML grows on me though. Not as ghastly white as everybody else.
The story is quite good and Chen Du Ling’s acting is ok(ish) by idol drama standards. Sadly the ML has neither looks nor acting skills so I am rather mystified as to how he got this role when there are plenty of more suitable actors around.
However, the MAIN REASON to watch this is Wen Zhengrong (who plays the FL’s mother). She is absolutely glorious!!! Every single scene with her is totally captivating.
Can someone please give this woman a main role!
No one is complaining about CDL’s acting. If anything, they’re complaining about the ML who actually looks wooden and has the same expression in every single scene. On Douyin they replaced him with other male actors implying the scenes would have hit harder if we had a ML that could act. His acting is so trash that I don’t even care about the romance part of this drama. The relationship between the FL and her mom is what I’m loving the most.
I can’t believe people are saying the ML is ugly! He has a very strong, ethnic profile, and to me, the most kissable looking lips I’ve seen in a while! The FL is beautiful and in the storyline, I applaud her loyalty to her female partner. I would almost call it a “girl love” situation.
I have to agree with your comment. The GL vibe is very strong when she is with her bestie. I almost thought they were lovers. Certainly, one can almost infer that her bestie is in love with her.
Love the strong chemistry between Chen Duling and the actress that plays FL’s mom. They have amazing chemistry. Actually, all the actresses in this drama have a very strong showing. Including the villains.
Although i enjoyed Blossom, personally the best ep for me was ep 1 (before rebirth) because of how epic it felt and it made me wonder how the story would be if they continued from there, rather than them restarting. But character wise, i felt FL in Blossom was too OP and that in the end, ML seems to just listen to her plan. I prefer both sides of the couple to be scheming together.
I don’t get how getting help is considered “fake female empowerment”. What’s wrong with having support? Empowerment doesn’t mean “I can do everything on my own.”
I actually like this main lead a lot. I’m at ep 14 and still don’t know if he truly love her or not. That shown that he is doing a great job at his role, being mysterious. CDL is beautiful and I love her in this role.
The story line is more mysterious and kept you wanting to know more. Maybe this is my type of drama because I usually fast forward Cdrama, even The Double, but I have not FF any moment in this drama. Everyone has different taste and preferences though.
Not as interesting as the Double or Blossom, mostly thanks to the acting and the visuals of the main leads. I watched 8 eps and have been distracted to more interesting K dramas since. I don’t feel any urge to pick up the Glory again and don’t feel any loss. The story seems forgettable. I may watch Kdrama the Glory though LOL. The latter has been in my bucket list, but I just need time to enjoy such a great hit. Given that I’ve been so much impressed by Lee Do Hyun in 18 Again recently, I definitely will check out K the Glory sooner or later.
I m watching more out of curiosity than the drama was appealing. Unlike Flourished Peony can’t wait for the next episode soonest and following every day, this drama I watch when I have free time. The story direction and production is good. The actors ok. The male lead is more interesting to me. But the story line is rather weak. Don’t know what will happen in the end but the seriously wanting to catch the FL over a suspected murder and the FL family’s so trivia things become big issues not very good scripting to entice
This drama was nicely written and interesting, the pace of the episodes keep me looking forward for more.I like Xin Yun Lai as ML as he has the male dominantfeatures with strong ethnic sense. He carried his character veryvwell indeed.Hope to see more of him as ML in new upcoming dramas. Chen Du Ling suited the FL character, looked timid but clever. Though I think her expressions can be better. Anyway, The Glory is as good as Blossom up to the latest episode. Well done.
I actually think I like this drama more than The Double. The ML could def be upgraded, but for what it is, he’s not required to emote more than he has to for the character. The FL also fits the frail beauty and convincing as a girl who’s been abused since young. The beginning is a little weird, though. It took a long unraveling to get to episode 17, where we discovered a big secret. Sometimes the plot feels a little too forced to get the logic in place, but I had the same complaints about The Double, so I guess it just comes with the territory.
There’s a big secret in The Glory and the motivations behind everyone’s actions keep me guessing. The ML’s characterization is interesting, an anti-hero, and keeps me on my toes. When you think he’s softened, he gives you a kick down to remind you who he is.
But in all honesty the one who steals the show in this drama is the mother. That first scene where she confronts the family was brilliant. She scared me and I thought her character was psychotic. She only continues to be more impressive as time goes on. A very powerful female character and amazing casting
This drama is getting good reception in China and CDL beauty and temperament are also getting high praise from both female and male drama fans. Although impo CDL sometimes appear too like lifeless mannequin in some scenes. In Blossom, both FL and ML complimented eo looks whenever they were on the same frame but for this drama, ML appears like grey background. The Double is not for me bec the FL was way too old looking vs the ML and her old face ruined the watching experience bec it doesn’t match the character temperament and age. Just like how Yang Zi always fail to convince the viewers whenever she plays ’a beautiful character’ in custome dramas bec her face and temperament are very inferior compared to what the character supposed to be. Just like how in Immortal Samsara, when MZY beautiful fairy appearance highlighted how old and ugly Yang Zi really was in that particular scene. Yang Zi also appeared boxy and stout next to MZY. So CDL getting a lot of praise for her beauty for this drama leaves a bad taste to Yang Zi fans who always have to defend her from netizens targeting YZ inferior appearance
Xin Yun Lại is great in this drama. He is manly handsome and not the typical frail pretty boys I see many times in C-drama and K-drama. So sick of pretty boys playing tough roles, not likely in real life. Love this drama for the story, acting and the chemistry between the 2 main characters.
