Youku Drops First Trailer for Big Budget Xianxia C-drama The Immortal Ascension with Yang Yang with Likely End of July Release
The wait may finally be over to see the live action adaptation of popular novel A Mortal’s Guide to Immortality. You just released the first trailer for The Immortal Ascension starring Yang Yang with female lead Jin Chen. The preview looks fine to me, someone with no attachment to the source IP and not a fan of xianxia unless it hooks me through leads or an interesting story. I don’t think Yang Yang comes across as “oily” which is the usual diss on him, he does seem older than a country bumpkin young man trying to attain godly powers. Jin Chen is gorgeous and just a year older than Yang Yang but she always looks like a beautiful auntie onscreen to me, and here the two give off Yang Guo and his Xiaolongnu gugu vibes haha. The drama is reportedly on deck in the end of July (maybe July 27th) as the third to be released big male lead IP C-drama of the year.

This looks like it could be promising. I’m looking forward to checking it out. Hopefully Yang Yang delivers the bare minimum but I don’t object to being pleasantly surprised.

His speech delivery is meh… The trailer doesn’t capture my interest either, I won’t be picking this up when it airs unless there’s many rave reviews.
He and Dilraba are in the same league, but she’s your supposed fav. LOL.

I don’t know if this is what you mean but Yang Yang’s speech feels very tight, like he is talking in his throat very clenched and doesn’t open his mouth or something. Anyway, just a harmless comment, no need to pick fight.

I love the veteran actor Chin Shih Chieh…. and a number of the supporting cast are great. Unsure about leads but supporting casts have a great number of strong actors. Good casting. Capitalist decides on leads, producer picks the rest.
I really liked both of them in You Are My Glory. Instead of Xianxia, i prefer both of them in modern drama.
The trailer looks so so. Nothing special.
I will watch for support casts if the story is good.

I am surprised to see younger folks show appreciation for Chin Shih Chieh. I too like him and saw him most recently in The Prisoner of Beauty. I think Youku has been casting very well the supporting roles in upcoming dramas. I may be showing my age with this comment but the veteran lineup in Vendetta of An is a dream. They may not be young and popular but each one is an acting talent in their own right.

It’s C-ent so it’s okay even if this drama ends up sucking. Just get the marketing team to blow it up. Judging from the comments on this site, all the recent hits (The Legend of Zang Hai, Feud, and the currently airing Coroner’s Diary) have either been overhyped and/or bought watered data. Actual quality productions and real acting skills are so rare these days, they’re almost extinct in C-ent. 😂

There were many comments under the LoZH articles on this site pointing out that it was overhyped (had six marketing companies plugging it). And that it was a commercial hit but not a critical hit because of Douban score being 7.1. I was referring to this site’s comments. You can read them under the article about the Douban score.

Legend of Zanghai is both a commercial and critical hit. It is very easy to see in China where even today cctv, people’s daily etc are regularly posting about it. CCTV is currently airing a 5 part show about various artistic elements of the drama. It was a huge hit in Taiwan which elevated it even further for I am sure obvious reasons.
Douban is irrelevant because simply put the score is locked. The production refused to pay the protection fee for the drama. As they should.
It is very weird that you accept opinions written here, without checking yourself and then slander a drama and the crew who made it.
No, Zanghai wasn’t watered. In fact, most data groups in China think the dara was actually slightly cut. Again, see fees.

I like male centric xianxia/wuxia dramas so I’ll definitely check it out. It has the same vibes as Guardians of the Dafeng, Mysterious Lotus Casebook and The Blood of Youth.
I want to watch for Wang Duo but he is so small in the posters and he’s barely in the trailers his screen time doesn’t look to promising.
