Director Guo Jing Ming’s Next C-drama Inferno of Wings Reportedly in Talks with Liu Yu Ning and Dai Lu Wa as the Leads — 126 Comments

  1. I tend to enjoy Guo Jing Min’s work as a writer. Cry Me a Sad River is one of my favorite books of all time. However, his work as a director always leaves me wanting more. In his productions, I get the impression that he lumps a lot of ideas together and then doesn’t know what to do with them.

As for the casting, I haven’t seen Dai Lu Wa in anything other than Lost You Forever. She didn’t leave a strong impression on me there. I’m more familiar with Liu Yuning and have appreciated his performance in works like Eternal Brotherhood or Heroes, but I don’t think he has the presence to convince as a main lead in romantic stories and even less so when he does not even come close to the description (both physically and personality-wise) of his characters in the novels.

    • The screenwriter will be Qian Jue (Good Bye, My Princess). So we may be able to avoid Edward Guo’s pretension. My Journey to You was less intelligent and complex than intended.

Liu Yuning looks no different from the average man and I find it unnecessary when in the dramas they point out that he has outstanding appearance or is handsome. I can’t see it and much less when Gao Weiguang who played his older brother in The Prisoner of Beauty. There are quite a few untalented actors/actresses in C-dramas but many have enough visuals for styling to amplify their visuals.

      • Qian Jue only has two works: Good Bye My Princess and Beauty of Resilience. I enjoyed the first one, disliked the latter. My stance towards her is neutral. Lol.

I recently read that Liu Yu Ning rejected this project.

    • @1+1 you’re always hating on Liu Yuning but ironically your South Korean favs don’t have good looks either. Also many of them are already close to becoming fossils – Kim Jae Wook, Lee Joon Gi, Kim Namgil, Nam Goongmin to name a few. Tan Jian Ci is one of your favs too. You’d like him to be as successful as Yuning.

      • Haha, I wonder if you will stop being devoted to Liu Yu Ning when he is about to turn 40. Tan Jian Ci isn’t super handsome but he has a good work ethic when it comes to getting into his characters. That’s why he’s a better actor than Liu Yu Ning (who takes it for granted that he’s charming just because it’s written in the script).

      • I hadn’t seen your comment. LOL. But Tan Jianci is not the name you should use to annoy me, I am indifferent towards him. The South Koreans you mentioned don’t play roles where they are described as ridiculously handsome. Can you see the difference?

  2. Dai Lu Wa is an actress who needs a certain styling to look good and I confirmed it in Moonlight Mystique because I wasn’t recognizing her. I loved her eye shadow, red lips, raven black hair, accessories…. She looked great, one of the best demon looks I’ve seen in C-drama land! C-netz usually describe her as a hard-working beauty (actors who depend on external means to achieve good appearance) but Liu Yunning does not seem visually compatible with her. He doesn’t even look “ethereal” with makeup and other aids.

  3. When I read the novel I thought of Liu Xue Yi. Visually he fits the character thanks to his good facial structure and delicate yet masculine features. He is also a capable actor. I think he’s better than the options people were suggesting in the forums: Deng Wei, Chen Zheyuan. Don’t know Dai Lu Wa at all but I like how she looks in the photo.

    • Agree but Liu Yue Xi needs a solid romance script where his character isn’t the creepy type or to explore other genres. He can act and these idol dramas aren’t going to do anything for him. I’m afraid he’ll end up stuck like many of his peers.

    • oh my that would be one of my ‘dream pairing’s! IF ONLY this happens end up with DLW & LXY as her lead ahhh I always try to lower my expectations with casting of lead pairings in recent years…
I either love pairing but script sucks OR I like script but it fais on second half OR both pairing and script scks..

  4. I thought this director favors pretty male leads. All actors in his work are strong in visual. What happened

    • Because this isn’t his own production. This is produced by Youhug Media (whom Dai Luwa is signed to) and they just hired him as a director so he has no say in casting (unlike Veil of Shadows where he picked his own leads).

  5. Doesn’t Guo Jing Ming have like6 or 7 other pending works, some of which he’s supposedly screenwriting. How does he have time to be working on them all properly?

    • the answer is that he doesn’t work properly. That’s why his projects either feel rushed or like something is missing.

  6. He just doesn’t fit the role, Tian Jia Rui didn’t do it either. Dai Luwa has acting chops and looks hella pretty in some dramas, in others not so much. Just my opinion, I don’t want to get into lame debates.

  7. Edward Guo is known for amplifying actors’ visuals with his styling. He made a below average looking actress like Esther Yu look good, and might be the only director who is able to make Liu Yuning look bearable. I had to look away from my screen several times in The Prisoner of Beauty when they did close up on his face.

    • @Mel It would be a stretch for me to look the other way just for him. 😂. If in real life I don’t go into pain every time I see unattractive people on the street, I wouldn’t do it for an actor. And if you’re not pretty, do you also avoid looking in the mirror? Or your loved ones?

      • Thank you! If LYN is really that unbearably ugly to someone, they should do themselves a favor and skip his drama even if they really love the story or other cast members. So exaggerated. 🙄

      • Only for Song Zuer tbh, which I became a fan of after watching The Demon Hunter’s Romance which luckily for me had an attractive male lead. I skipped all his other previous dramas because well, he’s ugly to me. Too bad if you get triggered by this ~ Don’t worry I do my best to avoid all his dramas and if he gets cast in this, its good news to me too because I don’t care about this actress.

And if you are curious, its only in the context of romantic interactions that I avoid ugly people. So yes in real life I do avoid dating ugly people. And I’m thankful that my parents did not give me an unbearable face to look at.

      • Haha, good joke! You had to look away from LYN’s face but Ren Jia Lun is attractive.

What more can you ask for in like than finding your own face bearable to look at? Life goals. Try putting that same face on the silver screen and see if the masses will agree. 😂

  8. Liu Yu Ning isn’t a handsome actor but isn’t it too mean to keep criticizing him for his looks as if he’s some kind of hideous monster? He just does his job whether you think he does it well or not and he doesn’t bother anyone.

The people here always blasting him for his looks are so hypocritical. I see loads of comments either praising Dylan Wang or Xiao Zhan on this site. Dylan Wang isn’t exactly any handsome guy either just because some girls fell for his bad boy look and voice dubber in LBDAF. As for Xiao Zhan, he clearly had plastic surgery if you go look at his before and after pictures and yet there are comments about his top visuals and mesmerizing eyes. It looks like Liu Yu Ning is just unlucky because he hasn’t had a xianxia makeover or plastic surgery and trying to pass it off as something else.

So tired of seeing comments about Liu Yu Ning not being suitable as a romantic male lead too when others have the same problem. Leo Wu is unbearably creepy. Yang Yang is greasy and in love with himself. Allen Ren and Xu Kai are robotic and wooden. And don’t get me started on the likes of Xiao Zhan and Gong Jun who’ve had more success and chemistry with men than any of their leading ladies.

It’s fine if you don’t like Liu Yu Ning but he clearly has fans and is getting roles. Find something new to say, no need to keep repeating the same critical and negative opinion about him under every article of his. It’s getting really old.

    • Lyn ? He’s as robotic as some actors you mentioned. The worst part is his lack of beauty and charisma. You still have to be suited to be appropriate for the role. Fans, no no need to cry here. People can have their opinion and i think he’s neither handsome not such a good actor. You have for sure such special taste. don’t impose it on others ok?

      • Well his acting has seriously improved I’m almost certain you have not watched his recent dramas because one constant feedback has been his good acting.

In ADWAD he basically had a role that covered half his face and the guy was still able to convey his emotions appropriately.

That guy is far from being a robotic actor, he is better than a lot of the pretty faces we have.

But that’s just my own opinion lol.

      • Also, if not with love overkill scenes, I rarely feel his chemistry with his female co-stars.

      • No one is crying except the haters, coming to every LYN article to cry about the same thing. Just because people can have opinions, is it necessary to keep sharing the same negative one over and over again? Does it not get old? You can also skip his article, you know? I’m not imposing my taste on anyone. Did I praise him anywhere in my comment? And I might think you sure have special taste too but I don’t care to know who you like.

    • The funny thing about Liu Yuning’s fans is that they are ultra sensitive and ready to mention other actors as an attempt to shove him down our throats when one hasn’t even compared him to others. LOL.

If you can be critical of these actors, what makes you think that we can’t talk about LYN?

      • This aesthetic is truly indescribable even unreliable. The admirer glasses are so scary. It’s already good that he managed to land good scenarios. Please let dramas that require visuals actors have people who have them.
It’s not necessary to attack people for an opinion when everyone is on same level loll.

      • The funniest thing is everyone’s fans behave like this. Nothing special or unique about LYN fans. Are you new here or just blind? 😂

    • XZ eyes are not attractive. 1 is bigger than the other and they look as if they are about to fall out. Dylan’s face is asymmetrical but it’s not as noticeable. Wu Lei has a rustic profile, his short nose can not be filmed from that angle. Allen Ren also had obvious work done and his acting is 1 note. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder

      • Again, the fact that x actors have had plastic surgery does not help Liu Yuning at all because the topic is that he does not fit the classic beauty of the male lead in this novel. The mention of asymmetry is also irrelevant, but Xiao Zhan’s eyes are nicely shaped. LOL. Ok, let’s forget about that. If beauty is so subjective, why do some of you get worked-up when we don’t find Liu Yuning attractive? Some people find him unbearable to look at, and if it depends on personal taste, shouldn’t we just accept such opinions instead of insisting or mentioning other actors as wild cards?

      • @Debbie. Oh, you’re being too emotional to think rationally. LOL. The link you posted doesn’t change my perception at all because I’m not seeing the Xiao Zhan of the past on screen. The present matters. LOL.

If beauty is subjective, by comparing his before and after, are you suggesting that he definitely got a better look when passing under the knife? Or what was your intention?

      • @1+1 IMNSHO, XZ’s eyes are not nicely shaped. The demi-eyelids are less than half the width of his eyes. His larger eye, the lower eyelid is widen in the outer part, giving an inexplicable pulled down appearance. The irises are small, showing white space under them when he looks straight. He also has strabismus, when he looks a certain way, the eyeballs are in different directions.

The point of mentioning the flaws of these actors is to illustrate that it’s ridiculous to harp on LYN’s looks when every actor has flaws, even the “beautiful” ones. How would you feel if every XZ article people comment about his wonky eyes? It gets dull and repetitive.

Feel free to criticize his acting, his line delivery, his singing, his other professional attributes but to continuously bash his looks like you are the arbitrator of beauty is insanity.

      • @E, so now there is objectivity according to science-based beauty metrics? LOL. That’s what I wanted to read!

I still like Xia Zhan’s eyes by the way. And just as I don’t find Liu Yuning attractive, there are people who do. But I don’t go around responding to their comments to contradict them by telling them they are nuts or have bad tastes, unlike those who disagreed with me calling me hater and whatnot. LOL.

If you read my comments well, they are all summarized in that he didn’t fit the physical description of the character given in the novel: man with a classic (Chinese standard) beauty and sharp, well-defined features. It’s something that Liu Yuning doesn’t have. No one has ridiculously perfect features, but there are better actors than him when it comes to visuals (for this characters). It’s not like among +1 billion people there were no options. LOL.

Flaws in the “beauties” are one thing, and a whole change in the facial department is another.

I didn’t disparage him for his looks (again, read my comments carefully), but I will answer your question anyway: I wouldn’t care if people point out that his eyes are uneven/wonky. Why should I let my feelings change just because of comments on the internet? Especially on this site, which is known for having unhinged comments. Lol.

  9. Lol at the rants above.

Anyway I’m puzzled why do investors keep using GJM as director when he hasn’t had a single hit drama as a director?

  10. Finally a lead costume drama for Dai Luwa *-* I swear she is so underrated! She can pull both cute and silly look while she can also do cool & chic as well. Her acting feels sincere and natural without overreactions. So very pretty and all.
Im glad to hear his name as her partner IF this happens.

  11. For someone who doesn’t want her fav to be criticized, you just went on and did the same to others. What makes you diff from those above then. It seems to me you’re just attracting more criticisms towards LYN.

    • It’s too early in my country to have popcorn while reading the comments that went off the deep end. Lol. I don’t see the point in comparing him to Xiao Zhan, Yang Yang Yang or Xu Kai. The criticism towards them won’t remove that Liu Yuning is a dude who doesn’t have enough visuals for his characters described as handsome or even ethereal.

      • All three you mentioned have had xianxias where the ML is supposed to be handsome/ethereal and none of those works did well either. Of the three, only Yang Yang was born handsome. I don’t consider Xu Kai handsome and Xiao Zhan had plastic surgery.

Blasting Liu Yu Ning for not being born handsome but still taking on those roles because he was HIRED for them and wants to WORK makes a lot of sense. He should totally turn them down so your faves can get them. It’s too early for popcorn but go get some caffeine and wake up. 😂

      • @Reina, hahahaha! None of them are on my list of faves, so your attempt at rage bait isn’t working. LOL. You should go cool off (maybe drink cold water) because your veins are definitely popping out. What does what you wrote have to do with the fact that he’s not attractive? Rabid fans always use lame arguments like “success” in unrelated discussions.

Caffeine would be better for you to wake you up and keep you on topic, which is: Liu Yuning does not fit in with the characters who are supposed to be described as HANDSOME. Or, even the best styling doesn’t help him look better. LOL.

Oh, I almost forgot that Liu Yuning also had plastic surgery. A nose job. Check out his pre-debut photos.

      • @1+1

Not rage bait. Only mentioned the ones you mentioned. Didn’t say those are your faves. Understand what you’re reading.

C-drama male and female lead characters are usually supposed to be attractive, either handsome or beautiful. Lots of actors and actresses don’t fit that description, regardless of styling.

Not finding plastic surgery photos on Liu Yu Ning. Maybe they’re in your head, just like my veins popping out. 😉

      • @Reina. Oh, poor you. You mentioned them first (in your long comment), so I just repeated their names to emphasize that the comparison is unnecessary considering that we were talking about looks and not whether he is more popular or talented than the other dudes. None of that has anything to do with the fact that Liu Yuning doesn’t visually fit some characters from some novels.

I haven’t written that it’s a requirement for actors to be handsome. But if an average or ugly actor plays someone who is described as good-looking, I just can’t take it seriously. It’s like seeing actors in their 30s playing teenage boys. LOL.

Yes, many don’t fit in. You recognize that. Then what is your suffering? You directed your anger at me wrongly because I didn’t call him ugly, hideous, or horrible like other users did. I even commented that I appreciate his acting. Can’t you read properly because you’re too busy fulfilling your role as a rabid fan?

And no. There’s nothing in my head, it’s on the internet. But I guess you don’t want to see it for fear that your veins will explode. LOL.

      • @1+1

It’s great that you finally mentioned one thing we can agree on. There’s nothing in your head. LOL.

      • @Reina. Hahaha. For someone who has nothing in their head, you’re spending too much time on me, which puts you on the same level or even worse, considering that you’re playing dumb and looking for a way to avoid reality (come on, use the internet and confirm what I mentioned). That’s why you only have answers at the level of a kindergarten kid. LMAO. Put more energy into your responses to me; don’t be predictable 😉

      • @1+1

You say I spend too much time on you, yet encourage me to put even more energy into my responses. LOL. Okay, as a last favor to you…

You stated yourself that you have nothing in your head. Not the smartest thing to do in hindsight, huh? Having nothing in your head is not bad enough? There’s a worse level?? LOL.

I don’t have a need to confirm what you wrote. You wrote it and if it’s readily available on the internet, the burden of proof is on you. I won’t be back to check for that though! We agree on another point. I spend too much time on someone like you with nothing in their head. LMAO.

      • @Reina

what a dedicated fan you are but Liu Yu Ning isn’t going to thank you or become any more handsome because of your efforts responding in an uncivilized manner to people who have not even been disrespectful to him. I just hope the pay is high because you’re putting a lot of effort into your one-person campaign. He didn’t even accept the role because he himself recognizes that he doesn’t fit in and you’re doing mental gymnastics just for him. Pathetic lmao, you’ve only managed to get him criticized even more. You need to be less emotional and more rational.

      • @REINA. There are jerks here but you’re deranged for trying to label users who have left positive or neutral opinions about LYN as haters. You gained nothing by mentioning the other actors who have nothing to do with this discussion. At least Koala gets some traffic.

      • @reina there’s no way Liu’s unbalanced face (and ultra-small eyes) can compete with the three-dimensional faces of Xu Kai & Xiao Zhan. it’s not my personal opinion, it’s a matter of attractiveness according to science. and don’t even mention Liu’s lanky body. being tall is good when you have nice body proportions.

      • Reina needs to quit the internet.

Such a long thread of comments just because someone wrote that LYN doesn’t have the necessary visuals to play fellas with ethereal beauty lmao. He is good looking to me but @Reina why didn’t you respond to those who insulted him?

I’m also a fan of his but we shouldn’t act as if our lives depend on how much we defend him.

      • @C-drama

I never said he was handsome or acted well. In fact, the first sentence in my original post was “ LYN isn’t a handsome actor…”

I’m doing too much mental gymnastics? Maybe, maybe not. You apparently need to do more. Your mind is not working correctly. It’s funny how people here are so naive with their conclusions. I am not even a LYN fan and have not and will not be watching any of his dramas. Again, more mental gymnastics for you to exercise that defunct brain of yours. Bye, I don’t want to discuss with people who have nothing in their heads or defunct brains!

      • @Stan

You call me deranged but you’re paying attention to me so what does that make you? I’m getting plenty of traffic with all the replies just like yours instead of people ignoring my comment. Of course Koala has the most traffic, everyone is here fighting on her website. Duh!

      • @No name

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Plus, I never said LYN is handsome. Learn to read and understand what you’re reading.

      • @Myolie

I’m not a LYN fan. I don’t need to quit the internet. People just need to learn to ignore me but they haven’t so you can’t really blame me. LOL.

      • @Reina. LOL. I can’t leave you, you amuse me. For someone who isn’t a fan and hasn’t seen his dramas, you’ve given good details about his chemistry with his female co-stars and whatnot. You started protecting him from every possible comment here and even bragged about how successful he is. Hahaha, you made comparisons between him and other actors while suffering and wondering why only he is criticized. Haha. If you were indifferent to him, you wouldn’t still be here. But your mind is worn out from mental gymnastics (you shouldn’t recommend it so that others don’t end up as foolish as you), so all you have is a lame contradiction. Funny! How naive of you to think that we have to ignore you when you’ve started acting like a rabid consort who’s about to lose favor. You should have thought about it and calmed down before writing. You can’t do it, can you? Unstable, silly, delusional.

    • @Reina. Oh. What a boring, predictable response, once again. If, according to you, I wasn’t worth your time from the start, why did you continue? Just a few minutes ago, I mentioned that you’re wasting too much energy on me. Do you like obeying me? LOL!

You’ve already wasted your limited mental capacity acting like a keyboard warrior to defend your highness Liu Yuning. My comments toward him have been harmless, but you’ve been acting as if it were a selection of concubines for his harem. HAHAHA!

“Not finding plastic surgery photos on Liu Yuning. Maybe they’re in your head.” You mentioned it first, the lack of intelligence has been in you since your first response to me. See? LOL. Are you so dense that you can’t stay on topic and keep the lines of the conversation going in order? Maybe I should have written to you as if you had learning disabilities? LOL.

You have nothing to add to save your rabid fan spirit. If you’re afraid to look up what I mentioned on the internet, just accept it. Next time you want to play the defender, at least make sure you have information that doesn’t make you look like an idiot. Or maybe that’s just your nature, and I’m here expecting too much from you.

Thanks for making me laugh, you can come back anytime.

  12. What’s wrong with y’all? He’s beautiful. Lol. He has super masculine energy in his portrayals, I actually believe he’s a warrior and could woo a woman. HAHAHA. But okayyyyyy, everyone. 🙄

    • HAHAHA, for sure. He’s an average uncle who should stop acting with younger actresses who don’t even make a good visual match for him at least. That way you wouldn’t notice his lack of good looks in roles where he’s supposed to have it. LOL. You can cry a river but don’t go drowning.

      • Liu Yu Ning was born in 1990 but he’s an uncle. You do realize many popular actors in C-ent are around his age, right? That’s a lot of uncles running around. Fans are crying, haters are crying, we’re all going to drown together when all of our tears make a river. But a lot of fans can swim. Can all the haters? 😂

      • @Reina

The last thing you’re doing is swimming; you’re too worked up to pretend you’re having a good time. I hope the pay is high.

      • @Ouch

Ouch. Are you hurting because you can’t come up with a better comeback? 😂

      • Just Emie bruh, you have issuuuuess. Consider his ROLES. His characters are mostly masters at fighting, leaders of nations, etc. His AGE works for his ROLES. And because he plays them well, it’s never awkward when he’s acting opposite the leading ladies. He’s had solid chemistry with all of them.

I know you were trying to bring my comments from the other thread in here, but please, graduate from LOOKS. My point has always been that actors and actresses need to BE THEIR CHARACTERS to convince the audience to believe in their relationships and/or invest in their stories. LYN knows how to play his characters well and elevates most stories through his portrayals.

(Btw, through your writing (and rage) I can tell who you are 😉)

    • Just because you think of him that way doesn’t mean that everyone else should. When you have criticized actors and actresses, you have done so freely to the point that you have fallen into name-calling several times. LOL. But for your favorite, respect should be mandatory, according to you. So much so that you consider there is something wrong with those who don’t share your tastes. Lol.

      • What you said is true. If you look at the comments all over this site, not just this article, it looks like everyone is a hypocrite, myself included and maybe you too but I don’t know what else you’ve shared. Human nature can be disappointing. No wonder everyone fights so much about some onscreen faces no one here personally knows. I guess we all should take a chill pill. 😂

      • @Reina, you should have followed your own advice and taken the chill pill, because your pathetic behavior as a bitter, resentful fan lasted almost the entire day. Just read the nonsense you’ve written. Lol.

      • NO. What people are objectively wrong about is criticizing LYN for his looks alone, and not his performances. Saying he’s ugly helps or hurts a story how???? At least when I say Wu Lei needs to bulk up to land movie gigs and elevate his performances in dramas, I say it thinking it will ACTUALLY help him to present the macho-warrior-lover type much better. I only suspended disbelief in “Love Like the Galaxy” because him and Zhao Lusi had such great chemistry. Did he actually execute the wise, strong, experienced general well? No, because he looked like a lovelorn baby for most of the drama, but I could pretend with him because I at least believed his character and ZLS’ were meant to be.

Come on, people. Give us more than “he’s ugly” when it comes to LYN. That’s such low level analysis of all the projects he’s been in.

      • @Lu, people who are acting as if he were Quasimodo clearly have an agenda against him. But in the same way that you consider that Wu Lei (lol, why is he in this discussion by the way?) needs to increase his muscular mass to look more manly for certain roles, I believe that Liu Yuning should stay away from projects where the character has a classic beauty (according to Chinese standards), such as in this adaptation. Especially when the character’s good looks play an important role in connecting the plot with the leading lady, and serves to trigger key events.

      • @ 1+1 LYN thinks exactly like you do. He knows the chatter around his looks, and he chooses dramas accordingly because he knows he’ll always catch heat from crazy netizens. Lol. He came from bottom up in his career. He started as a normal person, then became a singer, then became a much older actor than most in “idol” dramas these days… yet he still does live streams, knows how to hold his own on variety shows, and sings iconic theme songs for all these dramas we watch… I think he knows his worth and place in the industry. Even if he were to bow out of acting, this guy’s not going away because he’s figured out how to navigate the industry. And if he ONLY ever sang period drama OSTs for the rest of his career, it would be heaven. Lol

      • @lu

I love LYN as a celebrity. He’s an amazing singer and an improving actor. The best thing about him isn’t his looks or talent but his personality. He’s authentic, hardworking, and likable. Unlike the pretentious “pretty” faces who are actually neither handsome nor talented. The people so obsessed about downgrading him for his looks – it’s not just simply a matter of opinion. They are hopelessly shallow and mean.

      • @Lu. Yes, I read that he rejected the offer. It was a good move considering that every actor should know their limits and improve their work ethic when possible (cases where body builning is required, learning skills for the characters, and whatnot). Casting does matter in projects where the characters’ visuals are fundamental to the story.

  13. This Liu yuning is ugly narrative is just ridiculous and hilarious. The way some people comment you’d think the guy looks like shrek. Anyway the guy clearly has a lot of fans and he just proves that success in the entertainment industry is more than being a pretty face. I’m one of those seated for his next project and I’m hoping he keeps proving all these nay sayers wrong.

LYN pls press their necks well 🤣🤣🤣.

    • To me, Liu Yuning seems ordinary compared to the descriptions of his characters in the novels. An adaptation also has to be careful with the casting, it’s not as if there aren’t options among +1 billion population. LOL. I can enjoy his performance, but I will continue to say that he doesn’t fit certain roles.

      • Sadly, C-ent doesn’t care about casting the right actors, whether it’s based on looks/fit or acting talent. It’s ALL about traffic and capital backing. Once in a while I’ll circle back to C dramas but I’m spending most of my drama time on K dramas.

      • @Fei, I’ve also been focusing more on K-dramas, the quality is superior and the actors have a better work ethic. I keep coming back to C-dramas when it comes to adaptations of novels I love, only to be disappointed. LOL.

      • I can’t speak to all of his work, but ofthe 3 I’ve watched, TLB, POB and ADWAD, I dont remember his character being described as very handsome, or his looks being essential to the character. What gets mentioned most times are his height and small eyes.

I understand his visuals dont suite roles in which the characters beauty is an essential part of the character. LYN is more on the manly attractive side. But it leaves a bad taste when people flood comments with LYN is ugly, that statement goes beyond saying he is not suited for a particular character and reads more like bullying.

I read he has rejected the role, which is good for him. He might not be a beautuful Greek God, but he is clearly a smart mortal😂.

      • @Mimi, he’s definitely smarter and more successful than his naysayers here. The guy has lead roles to turn down. They’re just pathetic opinionated keyboard warriors. 😂

  14. There are people who don’t see beauty in conventionally attractive actors such as Fang Bing Bing, Huo Chien-hwa, Yang Yang, Dilraba, Liu Xue Yi, Xiao Zhan and others. So what’s the big deal if folks don’t appreciate the looks of Liu Yuning, who is more on the ordinary side?

P.S. I don’t care if he acts worse or better than them. That’s not the point of my comment.

    • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The names you listed as conventionally attractive – even those can be a huge point of contention.

      • If beauty is subjective, it should be logical that there are people who do not find Liu Yuning attractive, right?

      • @1+1

I was agreeing with @Koo Tin-lok. I do not find LYN attractive. Whether people find anyone attractive and unattractive is up to each person’s personal preference. I don’t think about it in terms of logic.

      • @Guest. Me neither, but I do like actors to resemble the character (from the novel) they are going to play. If it’s an original script or characters with vague descriptions, I have no problem with them being ordinary-looking.

If beauty is subjective, it’s not reasonable for them to respond like that, “You’re out of your mind, Liu Yuning is handsome, blah blah blah.” That’s my point. They can praise their fav without trying to convince me.

    • Fan Bing Bing is rumored to have had plastic surgery. Dilraba is usually considered exotically beautiful but not conventionally attractive. There are many who find her features not delicate and exquisite enough according to traditional Chinese standards of beauty. No comment on Huo Chien Hwa, Liu Xue Yi, and Yang Yang. Xiao Zhan is also someone who has had plastic surgery.

      • @Jing: Whether or not they have plastic surgery is irrelevant considering that they fit into what is conventionally considered attractive. If the issue is that they supposedly went under the knife, I doubt we should say that Liu Yuning should do so too, right?

@Guest: Your reading comprehension skills are poor. Lol. I mentioned them precisely to point out that there are folks who don’t find them appealing; you haven’t added anything new.

    • @Koo Tin-lok

Your reading comprehension skills are poor too. I was agreeing without actually literally saying so. No need to be a jerk.

    • @Koo Tin-lok

  15. Liu Yu Ning has turned down Inferno of Wings. He said (on today’s live stream) he felt he was not suitable for the role.

I agree. I think he’s a competent actor, but I can’t imagine him fitting (or getting closer) the visuals of the male lead in Que Ta Zhi.

    • Thank you for attaching the link.
Now I’m curious to know who else will be offered the script.
While there is no man who is an exact copy of Shen Zhi Yuan, there are actors who come close like Pentagon’s Yanan.
I have more names in mind but it’s not a good idea to mention them on here lol.

    • All the fighting above and it turns out he didn’t even accept the role. LOL. Can always appreciate LYN for being candid, honest, and modest. He will never be the most handsome or best actor, but he has a good personality and is still improving.

      • Yep. I like Liu Yu Ning. I first discovered him as a singer, and there isn’t a single OST he’s sung that I don’t appreciate. I find his voice to be fabulous. As I mentioned earlier, he is compelling. But I just don’t like it when actors take on roles that don’t suit them. It’s not a crime, I still want to share my opinion about it though.

Some of his fans behave uncivilly just because my comments (which are harmless, by the way) don’t seem welcome in their cult, lol.

    • Yan An is good-looking, tall, and muscular. He seems to be a nice fit in the visual department. However, he recently revealed that he has a brain tumor and will undergo surgery. His activities are currently on hold.

  16. I am done in this thread. People who are late to the party don’t need to bother with a reply @ me. Especially those desperately responding under different usernames! 😉

I’m gone but you’re more than welcome to rock on solo! 😂

    • Oh no, how quickly your energy ran out. I wonder what motivated you to write your first comment if you’re supposedly indifferent to Liu Yu Ning? You put a remarkable effort into mentioning Xu Kai, Xiao Zhan, Yang Yang, Wang He Di, Wu Lei, Ren Jialun and Gong Jun in a negative light. Nobody’s going to rock on solo, I doubt anyone can beat your one-man campaign. LOL.

      • But you are still going on after she left so although you can’t outdo her (you’re right about not being able to beat her), you’ve outlasted her. Congratulations, I guess? 😂

      • @1+1 is a rat

Hahaha. Terrible comeback. But it’s entertaining. @Reina didn’t respond to any of my points logically, and I doubt it would have been any different if she had stayed. All she had were emotional arguments. If you can read well, why don’t you check how she tried to evade my questions using lame excuses?

Was @Reina right in saying that Liu Yuning isn’t handsome? Lol! If she had won according to you, why did she say she was “done” with the comments? She should have continued enlightening us with her wisdom, so you could be part of the list of applicants to the harem or cult dedicated to Liu Yuning. LOL. Your hyperbole is funny, she wanted to deny reality and ultimately say that she doesn’t want to waste time, even though she did so without any problems until she ran out of resources. LOL. That’s what hurts you too, and that’s why you’re looking for a way to feel like you have something up your sleeve. But you should at least try to defend your position if you’re dangerous to me.

It wasn’t a competition, but it’s a shame she got off topic and got pissed off, just like you. LOL. The one who gets angry loses. At least come up with a better accusation. 😉

      • You’re the most logical, rational, and wise, etc. 🙄

And that’s why you’re still here being triggered and responding. I can push all your buttons and turn you on or off just like a toy in my hand to entertain me. I laugh at the trail of stupidity you leave here for all to see. 😂

      • @1+1 is a rat

THIS! More logical than you, yes. And that’s why I’ve got your adrenaline pumping high and fast. LMAO. I’m responding because you amuse me. I highly doubt you’re laughing considering how hurt you seemed in previous comments (you confused me with a user who despises your lordship Liu Yu Ning, quite emotional and stupid). Hahahaha. You can’t even hold your ground, all you’ve done and will continue to do is look for ways to resort to personal attacks. LOL. But it’s not working Liu Yuning turned down the role, and that’s a relief. You’re just another delusional, emotional, bitter fanatic in the crowd. Hahahaha.

      • What buttons? You mean yours? Because if so, you should adjust them to prevent your veins from popping out. LOL. According to you, I’m triggered, but the irony is that the one who is ultra sensitive about her fave, upset and ready to invent narratives, confusing users is YOU. You have a fixation with me because you don’t even try to respond to other users who have actually left derogatory comments about Liu Yuning. You and @Reina aren’t the only folks I’ve responded to. But are you so angry that you can’t even read that? Hahaha. That’s the difference, and it shows that you’re the only one who’s hurt. LOL. You can keep writing. In fact, I beg you to do so. How could I stop you from doing it if you’re entertaining me? LMAO.

  17. @reina lol.

why do those who are embarrassing themselves with their trashy comments always accuse others of using multiple names? It seems like your goal was to compare Yuning to better-looking actors so he’d get criticized even more. Once you get what you want you play the victim. Typical anti behavior.

  18. @1+1 has recently been on every LYN article to say the same thing over and over about him not being handsome enough to fulfill handsome roles. It’s like some new dig. LOL. Name one actor who can get a unanimous vote on being extremely handsome and ethereal.

Thanks @Reina, whoever you are, for bringing out the best in @1+1, who “can’t leave you” and still chasing you after you’ve left, only because she never got the last word on anything even after changing usernames. LMAO. She was still trying to sound like a legit drama critic but you really brought out all the crazy in her. Lost all credibility. Haha.

    • THIS! This is the funniest thing I have read in this comment section. I wish I had seen you guys getting upset about nothing before but this is the first time I’ve commented on an article related to Liu Yuning. You are probably confusing me with someone else who left you triggered. I am not the only one who has commented that he is not handsome enough for certain roles, and in fact, my comments have been neutral compared to others on this site. But I have no problem with you developing a fixation with me from now on. LOL.

@Reina has not brought out the best in me, nor the worst. LOL. All I did was use her same energy to respond to her, but she didn’t like seeing her reflection. Don’t expect me to be polite when she first started being rabid. You just want to see what suits you so you can justify her (and yours) silly behavior.

Drama critic? Oh, I know which user you are confusing me with! It’s laughable because I’ve had disagreements with her a few times.

Multiple accounts? I expected a better effort from you, you can learn from @Reina, who according to you, left me speechless. LOL.

  19. I don’t know the source materials of the roles LYN has taken, so can’t make a comment on how beautiful the character is supposed to be – but I find him quite attractive? I also haven’t seen all his dramas, but the ones that I have, I have enjoyed his acting – he has made all the characters believable and seems to have good chemistry with his FLs.

    • I agree with you. He may not be the best actor of the century but he’s a done a good job in all his roles so far. As for looks, I find him most attractive with simple styling. His eyes are his best feature imo

It’s beyond me how he manages to generate such strong opinions from people who act like he’s the ugliest guy they’ve ever laid eyes on when there are male celebrities out there who are less fortunate in the looks department by far 😅

      • I like his acting in various dramas, but I just felt, and still feel, that he wasn’t the right person to play the male lead in this novel, at least in terms of appearance. Nothing about him fits the character visually. Although it’s impossible to find an exact match, there are more suitable actors.

As I mentioned before, people who act as if he were Gollum, Quasimodo, or Nostradamus obviously have an agenda and were waiting for an opportunity to attack him. But I don’t see why people like me, who simply express disagreement, should be labeled as haters.

  20. Apparently he rejected because he said he didn’t fit the role. I agree with this decision, in the novel the FL is a demon who likes flirting with men and a major reason she starts a relationship with the male lead is because he is very handsome, which LYN isn’t.

  21. First things first, I am not a LYN fan nor his anti. Just commenting from a neutral perspective after seeing all the comments above.

Not everyone who watches a drama knows the source material from which it’s adapted. These viewers are less likely to be disappointed because of preconceived expectations. Even those who are familiar with the source material won’t share the same opinion on how it should be adapted and who to cast.

LYN already declined the role because he doesn’t feel suitable for it. He would’ve been able to review the script and base his decision on the how the character/story is written and also to consider whether it’s a collaboration he’s interested in. His decision was probably not based on whether he thought he is suitable in terms of visuals. Regardless of how handsome the character is written in the source material, I would not have a problem if LYN had taken the role. The casting director/production offered it to him and it’s his right to take a job opportunity he wants (and also the viewers’ right to watch or not watch). In this case, he wasn’t interested anyway.

It’s not a one size fits all situation. C-ent spins out endless dramas so surely everyone can find someone or something they like. The comments section exploded because some people are provocative, others are very sensitive/easily triggered, and still others are ready to return fire with fire.

    • Carol, honestly when I wrote that LYN isn’t handsome, I was thinking about the flack he’d probally get from Netizens if he took a role that the female lead is constantly calling more handsome than other men. I also think he wouldn’t suit the male lead based on the character in the source material, but he still could’ve portrayed him well enough. After all, Dai Lu Wa doesn’t suit the visual described in the novel either, but I’m super excited about her rumoured casting because I know she can do a good job after watching her play Fu Ling in Moonlight Mystique. If he accepted the role, I would have watched without complaining, because, you’re right, he is allowed to accept a job oppurtunity that comes his way. Honestly, regarding the source material, the lead characters are fresh and well-written, but the plot is weak, so I don’t have too many expectations and I already dropped the novel. So, he probally isn’t missing out on a masterpiece here anyway, and I can totally see why he rejected the offer.

  22. To date, I’ve watched 2 POB and ADWAD to the end, enjoyed both immensely, thought he suited both roles – particularly in ADWAD. Have seen about half of the Long Ballard – prefer watching the relationship between him and Zhao Lu Shi unfold to the M/F lead/s. DESPITE Lei W being the ‘handsome’ one and a decent actor, from what I’ve seen. Not sure I’ll continue with it, it’s long and am finding it slow and repetitive.

Anyway, I’ve been pondering this handsome thing, to the point where it did distract me in ADWAD – I finished it yesterday. I stared at Liu YU Ning more than a few times, just to judge his looks, ‘objectively’. Someone above mentioned his eyes, critically, saying they unattractive or something along those lines, which surprised me, I think they’re one of his best features, liked his eye makeup. Maybe it’s because he was wearing a mask a fair bit of the time and his eyes therefore became the focal point of his face and maybe it’s because he was filmed well but I thought his eyes looked good/expressive. Subjectively, I personally don’t find him handsome BUT I like him, and the characters he has played a lot. He brings something and, I’ve realised that I appreciate that more than the ‘handsome-ness’ or lack, thereof.

  23. I find it very amusing when people disparage LYN -or any other lead actor, by the way- saying they look “average”.
If you want to see “average”, besides taking a stroll at any park in Beijing or Seoul or wherever, you could always pay attention to the extras. In A Dream within a Dream, pay attention to the Night Wanderers – they are your average guys. Not Liu Yuning, who by no means can be called “average”.
If you think Xiao Zhan’s eyes are uneven (I read that in one of the comments above, ffs), take a look at all the nameless cultivators in The Untamed.
If you find Wu Lei’s nose ugly (I read that too!), by all means, check his nameless soldiers in Love like the Galaxy.
If you find Wang Hedi’s face asymmetrical (face palm), check the extras in Guardians of the Dafeng.
What I mean is, lead actors are NEVER average. They are ALL handsome. Some are more on the ethereal side, like Luo Yunxi, some on the more masculine side, like Liu Yuning. And we may prefer one to another, but that doesn’t mean the latter is not handsome.
By the way, it seems that Liu Yuning rejected the role, saying he does not feel he’s suitable for the character (though it may also be that he has absolutely no wish to work with that director), so all haters can calm down, I guess.

    • “While he recognised the quality of the director and the script, he felt he was not suitable for the role/drama.” (I have attached the link from a fans’ blog).

He may not have been referring to his physical appearance, though.

But for me, visually, he didn’t fit the character. It has nothing to do with whether I find him good-looking or not, but rather that the male lead of this novel has a fairly detailed description: from his large eyes, high cheekbones, and well-defined, angular features. On the ethereal side if I remember correctly.

I think there are actors who are a better fit. Or how is it possible that among +1 billion inhabitants there are no other options? LOL.

  24. This site. You leave a positive or defensive comment, you’re a fan. You leave a negative or critical comment, you’re a hater. Because there are only two types of people in this world. LOL.

  25. 😝😝😝😝No that poster comment on Xiao Zhan was crazy .They went all in they must really hate the guy .Who criticizes someone’s eyes 😆😆😆😆

  26. Whenever there were threads with 100+ comments, my fav was definitely tagged. LOL. With PS or not (that has no way to verify despite more than one popular PS surgeons in China already came out to refute the speculation per their own experience in the practice), his eyes are always a wonder to look at. LOL. His makeup artist is amazing. His eyes without makeup aren’t that mesmerizing. And he looks just like a very good-looking young guy on college campus without any makeup. I don’t believe he had PS by comparing his bare face with his own college photos. Slimming down can change a person’s facial features dramatically. That happened to both me and my hubby too. Therefore, I think those who spreading the narrative that he’s got PS are just butthurt cuz their favs are no competition with him in visuals. LOL.

  27. I had a fun read of this long thread that’s going banana. LOL. Nice to finally find some savvy commenters that delivered valid points. In the past, one could only expect to be labeled either as a fan or a hater on this site cuz a cohort of regular visitors had a binary view of the world and people, either black or white. LOL. And, you can only either praise or hate an actor. No room for a neutral opinion by just stating facts. In particular worthy of a mention is @1+1, who was on point and herself alone knocked out a ring of rabid followers of LYN. LMAO. It’s a blast to follow her logical punch after punch. Good Girl (that reminds me of Good Boy LOL) !!!

    • I hope you will apply the same logic as well when labeling people as CCP supporters because according to you, one can only either praise or hate CCP, no room for a neutral opinion by just stating facts 🤣

      • LOL. The fact is Lilith is indeed a CCP stooge since what you said about the CCP China aren’t fact based. I can’t say the same thing about others though. I’ve been always only talking about you cuz you’ve got a long track record for proof. LOL.

      • Track record like lamenting about underage castings in entertainment industries in general, but somehow it’s offensive to you because I didn’t only blame China like you did? 🤣

  28. There were some logical/rational points brought up in many of the posts throughout this thread regardless of their stance. No particular winner, just different opinions and perspectives.

But when the fighting started, they all became rabid, LYN fan or not. When they threw logic and rationality out the window and just argued endlessly, it’s clear who got totally served and should’ve just quit and gone offline to sharpen their rabid mode fighting skills. It was an absolute riot.

I agree with @Carol’s neutral comment. LYN or any other actor, they’ll continue to accept roles they are offered and want. Unless there is a massive audience objection that affects the casting process, just accept whatever happens and watch or skip.

  29. Not ya’ll fighting in the comments. Beauty is subjective as hell. Although it is rude to be calling others ugly. Lawd.

  30. I have been on the lookout for Dai Luwa since watching her phenomenal performance as Fuling in Moonlight Mystique. If this rumor is true that she will be casted as Ruyi in Inferno of Wings, then I am ecstatic. I just finished reading the English translation of Inferno of Wings in 3 days. It’s a very good story, with a good mix of an enduring love that spans thousands of years and epic battles among gods, demons, and mortals.

    (Some spoilers ahead!)

Ruyi, the female lead character, reminds me a bit of Fuling from Moonlight Mystique – decisive, carefree, seductively beautiful, but with that tinge of vulnerability and humanity underneath the tough exterior that never fails to soften the male lead’s heart. This role is perfect for Dai Luwa! The male lead is described as tall (about a head taller than the female lead) and “peerlessly handsome.” He is the Azure God, who is reserved, cold-faced, strict, and never bends the rules. He sees everything in black and white, but for Ruyi (female lead, who is a demon), he changes and starts to see that the world is filled with shades of gray.

Is there any more news on the search for the male lead? I am very excited to find out who will play the Azure God. I think if they cast the right actor to star opposite Dai Luwa and don’t make weird changes to the original novel plot, this Ruyi-Azure God pairing will become a fan favorite.
