Bai Lu and Wang Xing Yue Investigate Tang Dynasty Crimes in Youku Period Drama Unveil: Jadewind — 10 Comments

  1. Yay! All it needs is a decent script and direction that matches up. I’m fond of period detective stories and am so ready to be on board for a quality one.

  2. After binging some old fantasy Kdrama back before pandemic, all Cdramas are pale in comparison. K writers are quadruple threats beating Chinese counterparts in terms of creativity, logic coherence, depth, and inspiration. While You Were Sleeping is such a good example that outstanding writing can offer so much entertainment value even both the leads aren’t my favs. It doesn’t matter how much I like some C actors, most of the scripts failed them. WXY’s dramas since the Double have been lacking in writing and boring. I hope he is not going through the motions after a breakout hit just as BL appears to have been doing for years.

    • WXY’s last two dramas were all accepted before his breakout. the quality of scripts being offered to him have hopefully improved by now (though I’m not sure I trust this one since Yu Zheng reportedly forced it on both him and Bai Lu.) But C-ent is obviously going through a rut right now, even prestige creative teams are faltering.

      • I just hope his potential isn’t wasted on weak projects and weak pairings. I really want to see him paired with actresses that can go toe to toe with him in the chemistry department. He’s young enough to build his career before he’s solidly in leading man territory. I’d love for him to take on some supporting roles working with renowned vets in television and in films that make the film festival circuit. I just have seen way too many duds drama wise, and promising actors not being able to fulfill their potential. I just loved Bai Lu, Xu Kai and Wu Jia Yi in Arsenal Military Academy and I think it the best work of all three. Wu Jia Yi was a true highlight of that drama and I feel like she’s been MIA. I can’t believe she and Wang Xing Yue have a drama together that still hasn’t aired yet. Seriously what is going on with Shadow Detective that it’s been on hold this long? I’m almost ready for them to just shoot another drama together if that one isn’t going to air. Their In The Mood for Love homage photoshoot for Shadow Detective is such a tease.

      • @Mia his next drama is rumored to be a thriller with Wang Qian Yuan (an award winning veteran) and Elvira Cai (who I enjoyed in Fake It Till You Make It and The Justice.) unfortunately, it’s drug themed so it might veer to preachy propaganda if the script is bad but supposedly all characters are morally grey and constantly switch between good and bad within the story so here’s hoping it’ll be a good one.

the little clips I’ve seen of Shadow Detective don’t seem to match that photoshoot so I wouldn’t get my hopes up too much. but few actors, no matter how talented, have both connections and luck to hit it right all the time. a little bit of growing pains is expected.

The rumored thriller looks promising. If it’s well written, cast, and directed, I could see it being one of iQiyi’s ‘Light On’ dramas. I think he really has the potential to have a future as a serious actor in film. He’s young so he can build his name up putting in good work in prestige projects doing supporting roles working with vets while still taking on romantic dramas. Funny enough, even though I enjoy xianxia dramas, I hope he doesn’t do them. It’s a fine line he has to walk. I look at Wu Lei and I could see why he took a break from the projects that can attract the type of fans dramas can attract. The negative media attention could damage his brand and keep renowned directors and producers in the film world from taking him seriously.

  3. I think Bai Lu is a decent actress, but nothing particularly special so far.
Wang Xing Yue is great and still very young at just 23, so he has plenty of time to improve and make better choices.
I hope the drama turns out well; everything I’ve read about it sounds like something I would enjoy.

  4. Yes to the comment about WXY’s Republican having an awesome photoshoot that recalls “In the Mood for Love” (my fav movie of all time in any language)! 🙂 I can’t wait for that to come out!
