Cheng Yi’s Big Male Lead Wuxia Period C-drama The Journey of Legend to Premiere September 11th on Tencent and iQiyi Streaming
So I’m not a Cheng Yi fan and wonder if it’s a me thing, because he’s definitely one of the top C-drama actors and gets tons of big roles and projects but I just have yet to understand his appeal. But he’s back to see if he can deliver another hit and keep his standing on the top with The Journey of Legend, the delayed a few times period wuxia C-drama that will premiere this week on September 11th. It’s a dual platform release on both Tencent and iQiyi, and is the fourth and last big male lead big budget C-drama for this year 2025. The three earlier are ranked in terms of success with The Legend of Zang Hai with Xiao Zhan on top, the The Immortal Ascension with Yang Yang a solid hit, and The Guardians of the Dafeng with Dylan Wang a mixed reception just okay release. This drama was delayed for a a few months after second female lead Li Kai Xin (Eleanor Lee) was swept up into a voice recording scandal where she allegedly insulted C-ent and Chinese fans, but that has been cleared up and she will remain in this drama as confirmed by the production this week in pre-release promos that mention her name and she is in the newly released character stills. Not sure if her scenes will/have been cut down though.

I watched three CY’s dramas. I like them and I think he is an okay actor. My problem is his chara’s styling quite similar each other. And his face, in my opinion, sometimes not expresive enough. I always say to myself when watching his drama “Chen Yi as Chen Yi” again 😊

Lol … Im not his fan. I just watch his drama because I like the donghua version or the novels. And the ensemble cast help a lot.
Sorry for going off topic, I just read the news about Yu Menglong and was so shocked that I was speechless. I felt like I was sent back in the day when Park Yongha death was announced. all of my condolences to his family 🙏🏿.
Yeah, the news is shocking and sad. RIP. I’m still trying to come to terms with it.
OMG!!! I did enjoy afew of his dramas. Not a great actor but some of the dramas he picked really suited him. I feel sad for his death… RIP
its nota you thing I also have same problem with him yet I always give a chance to his dramas when its romance. If lead couple has chemistry I end up watching it anyway…
There is “something” about Cheng Yi that is appealing. I am not sure exactly what! I look at him and think he’s not that handsome, then I look at him again and think he is. Sometimes I think he’s too deadpan in acting, then he shows incredible depth through his eyes. Anyway, whatever his “it” factor is, I will be checking this drama out !
I have been looking forward to this drama… I am one of the rare few on this site that has a soft spot for Cheng Yi… I enjoyed 3 of his dramas, the rest, I dropped.
I am glad Eleanor Lee who fought for her innocence was not removed from drama. The ex-assistant have apology for the fake audio clip. Police investigation was involved.
Now, I hope this drama will be enjoyable for me.

Cheng Yi seems to have a solid fanbase thus his dramas are mostly popular. I often see him rank close to XZ so I wouldn’t be surprised if TJOL will end up close 2nd.
I don’t think YY’s drama is a bigger hit than GOTD. The views ranking from what I’ve seen is not even close.
If it’s a me thing, then I guess there must be a lot of “me” like me. LOL. I’m not sure if he’s a good actor or not cuz I’ve never been able to finish one single ep of any single drama of CY. But one thing for sure IMO is that one never changing everlasting the steadiest the most predictable thing existing in the current world is CY’s forever monotonous looks and styling, regardless his hairs are dyed grey or any color. LOL.

It’s ‘me’. I tried to like his works but still couldn’t drag myself to finish watching his dramas.
I wasn’t a fan of Cheng Yi before Mysterious Lotus Casebook – my impression of him was “the guy who kept vomitting blood”. Now I find him a competent wuxia actor as he seems to have found his niche. The Journey of Legend is a fun watch for now.

Anyway the non-fan comments I saw from the Chinese side include “Drama’s CGI is worse than Angelababy’s General and I.”, “Male lead is nearing his 40s yet wears girlish pink outfits.”, “Male lead’s face has more filters than anyone else.”, “This abomination of a drama is NOT wuxia, calling it wuxia is an insult to the genre.”, “Male lead’s acting is still bad with terrible speech delivery.”
Let’s see if this drama will get a high Douban rating. 🍿
Cheng Yi always looks the same, so boring, but of course only some actors get hated on for walking from one set to another. His acting is also so boring. People criticize Yang Zi for pulling the same repetitive acting but he’s the same. Worse, his favor relies so much on the plot and story catering to his characters and a sob story while making the others hated, he can’t stand out otherwise.
I agree with these comments. I have watched a couple of episodes and the production quality is very low. The story is nothing new. Side actors are ppl never seen before, Cheng Yi looks way to old for his character. It’s boring. At least Liu Yuning dramas were interesting. YY drama was gaming,eavesdrop next plotline, internal monologe by ML,learn new skill, level up, repeat. Legend of Zhang Hai was good quality, good acting and intelligent script.
