Youku Wuxia C-drama Blood River Premieres to Average Reception But Massive BL-viewer Buzz for the Bromance Between Male Leads Gong Jun and Chang Hua Sen
My brother in Christ lol, even the stills are enough to make this point abundantly clear unless one needs glasses. Newly premiered Youku wuxia C-drama Blood River (or Dark River) is off to an okay-ish start. The heat index within Youku just broke 9000 which isn’t bad but not portending a true hit anytime yet. The only buzz it’s getting is from the BL-viewers contingent whom are loving the not-so-subtle homoerotic subtext between the friendship and bromance of male leads Gong Jun and Chang Hua Sen‘s characters as children who survived training to grow up into top assassins and have each other’s back. Har har, sorry these jokes just write itself. BL-fans are saying this drama’s male leads interactions is like the second coming of Word of Honor, but this time Gong Jun is the tightly wound straight laced one while Chang Hua Sen plays the rule breaker type with more emotion. It helps that these two actors are both very very handsome and styled very well onscreen here, and Chang Hua Sen does pining like nobody’s business as he showed in A Journey to Love. Sadly the reviews on Gong Jun’s “acting” is that he still can’t act haha but at least he’s looking great standing there onscreen while Chang Hua Sen kinda acts circles around him.
Blood River premiered on Monday, the dead period for a new release.But the popularity has been on a steady rise since the premiere Yesterday heat index was 9582.
What I don’t understand about GJ is that why do they insist on putting him in costume dramas? He is so wooden and it is amplified in those. The only drama of his I have finished and liked was Love Equations and I thought that was a good role for him. A little innocent and also a little silly.
Gong Jun’s facial muscles don’t twitch one bit. Netizens are reaching. There are no BL vibes because there are no vibes at all. Lol. Siiiiigh. Chang Hua Sen in period garb is always a 🤭👍 though. Hope he gets to lead something good with a decent leading lady that’s matches him one day.

As Anhe enjoyer, I dont like this adaptation. GJ was too stiff. Su Muyu supposed to be cool person with charisma.
