Casting Change as Yang Mi’s Next Big Budget Period C-drama The Reign of Northern Wei Changes Male Lead From Liu Xue Yi to Liu Yu Ning
So this isn’t one of those idol dramas where casting is all over the place until it’s locked down right before filming. Period C-drama The Reign of Northern Wei (江山大同 Jiang Shan Da Tong) is a big budget big name cast serious project that typically has the leads set early on so this is a bit of a surprise. The drama will star Yang Mi from young woman to the future Empress Feng of the Northern Wei Dynasty and last week C-ent was reporting that the male lead will be Liu Xue Yi. Alas that was not locked down because the production has reportedly changed its choice and the male lead will now be Liu Yu Ning. I’m good with either actor and it’s a real get to land the role on such a prestige production.

I love Liu Yu Ning, but I think Liu Xue Yi is the better fit for a big historical like this.
I like both guys, but still…how disappointing. I understand though since casting Liu Yu Ning will likely entice more investors to invest in this big budget drama.
Since this isn’t confirmed yet, I wonder if the final casting choice will end up being someone completely different.
From young girl? Cant they cast an actual young girl before progressing to her? Give someone a break as well?
I’ll rather Chen Xingxu, that guy can act. For those complaining about Yang Mi, do note that the drama attached her name to the casting rumors first, meaning her casting is prioritized over the male lead.
Agree with Chen Xingxu. Either him or Liu Xueyi would be a better choice than Liu Yuning. But I guess popularity >>>> talent.
LYN was casted for AJTL months before LSS, didn’t stop her fans from falsely accusing him of stealing her scenes or viciously cyberbullying him when it wasn’t even possible in the first place because her husband was one of the investors.
Feel bad for the other actor. I can sense the struggle for him to maintain relevant but barely making things stick like most actors have. I guess the second choice is for more traffic and attention. He is okay but still lacking in acting by a hair. The main female seems to be struggling lately too with her acting range and relevance for some time too. Though to be fair some slightly older popular actors seem to be struggling as of late but I also feel it can be due to sloppy scripts that fail to maintain a cohesive plot and proper ending. Hope for the best.
Doesn’t Liu Yuning’s height bother anyone in historicals? I like the guy, a good actor — in modern dress dramas. But how in the world did he become the go-to guy for historicals?
Lmao that is a terrible casting. He is at best a mediocre actor and she has no charisma on screen, on the contrary she needs to be carried.
This is a shame. Im not saying LYN cant act but with this kind of story and setting LXY is a lot better fit. Yet looks like they dont only want an actor but also sponsors coming alongside the choice so…
shame on them because watching YM & LXY in a serious tone of costume historical would have been amazing. I wish I never knew the first choice after hearing this..
This is perhaps an opportunity for YM to get back her glory in her heyday. She’s got a lot of flack in recent years. Unfortunately I always had trouble watching LYN after A Journey to Love. His smarmy image can’t get out of my head lol. I just can’t take him seriously as a ML regardless of how good his leading lady is. My tolerance of his presence in any romantic scenes is almost zero. That’s how bad he impressed me! Condolence to all the actresses costarring with him! lol
Regardless of what anyone thinks of LYN and his acting…it’s an undeniable fact that anything he stars in is an almost surefire money maker these days. Meanwhile, Yang Mi is riding her recent comeback success in This Thriving Land. Considering the state of CDramaland, I understand the decision.
Personally, I think LXY is a better actor (maybe one of the best that regularly acts in idol dramas), but LYN improves his acting in each drama I’ve seen of his.
Glad LYN has been offered a prestige drama role.
This is really disappointing. I don’t know much about the other actor, but I adore LXY. He is the only actor that can get me through an entire C-drama. Most other pretty “traffic’ actors look like teenagers and bore me to tears, LXY is the one C-drama actor that’s for grownups. He’s always interesting and nuanced. Unfortunately, his talent gets dragged down by predictable and ridiculous scripts, and FLs who can’t match his talent (JJY in In Blossom, cough cough). He’s also uniquely beautiful. But because he’s 35, I guess he’s considered “old” now, which is absurd, but that’s how disposable people are in this industry. I hope “Against the Current” is a hit for him.
This is really disappointing. Why go for a traffic actor instead of a professionally trained one?
I’m definitely looking forward to Against the Current. It looks great and may be the ‘breakout’ role for LXY.
