First Look at Song Hye Kyo and Gong Yoo in Prestige Netflix K-drama Tantara Set in the Budding Era of Modern Show Business in South Korea
Period dramas don’t immediately refer to historicals, these days as time moves forward even what feels like just yesteryear is now a “period” piece with defined aesthetics and bygone elements. Netflix has released the first stills for the K-drama Tantara (Korean title Show Business) set in the modern era of South Korean entertainment, it starts in the 1960s and goes through the 1980s. The leads are Song Hye Kyo and Gong Yoo, a first collaboration for the two despite entering showbiz and becoming popular in the same era. It’s like if Full House and Coffee Prince had a serious baby lol. Joining them are supporting leads Cha Seung Won, Honey Lee, and Seolhyun, and probably a large swatch of the character and veteran actors in K-ent. It’s scheduled to be a 22-episode drama and likely to be split into seasons or perhaps discreet releases of episode batches.

I love both of them so I am seated. The plot sounds interesting as well, let’s see how it goes. If the writers did their job well, these two should be able to pull it up.
The title and the synopsis both sound boring. lol. Not sure what to draw these two big stars to lead the drama. Perhaps the prestige of the director persuaded them.
Both leads are boring to me. Shk still cant act and gy has never interested me. Only interested in csw and honey lee. The synopsis as well, is this slice of life? Idk ig we will watch this fail as well, since so many kdramas n movies with big names have been flopping lately. Kdramas really have lost their touch, dont recall even watching any the past 4 years, so much for their selling their souls to streaming platforms like Netflix. At least I have non idol cdramas to keep me occupied…
When I saw the mash up that netflix did of upcoming dramas and it came time for tantara, I guess I wasn’t expecting it because I screamed so much, people around me started laughing and asking what was up😂😂. I knew I loved gong yoo, maybe even a little too much, but even I didn’t know I loved him sooo much 😇. I’m looking forward to this drama and praying it’s good. If the story is great I trust my gong yoo, and I believe song hye kyo is also a gifted actress. Sooo excited, God keeping us,I honestly can’t wait
Song hye kyo looking for another global hit. Netflix is new hallyu taking shows to next level globally. The glory was a megahit and landed shk huge cf deals even outside korea. She is in third decade making more money than ever
I normally like historicals, but I’m not a fan of the writer. Our Blues put me to sleep countless times as I plodded through it. But I’m a Gong Yoo fan and will watch anything he’s in. 22 episodes though, ugh. Let’s see.
I am looking forward to seeing this show. The cast sounds great especially with Honey Lee added to the mix.
The subject and even Hyekyo’s look (short hair) is very similar to the drama she did with Hyunbin Worlds Within/the world that they live in. Worlds within wasn’t really a success from what i remember…
Same writer as this drama, too. So I don’t have high expectations.
Ah a Noh Hee-kyung drama! Seems like it’ll be interesting. I like dramas that can take place over a large swath of time.
I don’t get why SHG always has to look so drab nowadays. Hair sucks and her clothes suck and there’s a scowl on the face. I’m getting a depressed vibe by just looking at her photo here.
Maybe she wants to downplay her “looks” so she stops being accused of someone who just gets roles because of her face and star power. I guess at her age, she wants to be taken seriously as an actress and not just a brand endorser of luxury products.
Shk with the same old same old acting again. The only thing she changes in every drama is her hair. NHK is an overhyped writer and I never got the appeal of her plodding dramas.
I found The World That They Live In, by the same scriptwriter, fascinating – a well-written, realistic portrayal of the world of drama-making and the lives of those involved. I was completely absorbed in it, it also gave me a greater appreciation of kdrama-making, in all its aspects.
Also thought that Hyun Bin and SHK were excellent, other actors impressed, too. Can’t believe it’s almost 20 years ago. I will definitely start it.
I’m glad SHK is finally paired up with someone that is compatible with her in terms of looks and age.
Watch the movie first before judging. Good or bad let’s see it!
I absolutely love Noh Hee-kyung, both her critically-acclaimed ones (those that long-time K-Drama bloggers rave about, like Goodbye Solo) and her more conventional fare (like That Winter, The Wind Blows). I just hope she’s not retreading the Worlds Within route (with Song Hye-kyo again!) though. The period setting makes me think this will be Worlds Within meets Jeong-nyeon. My only misgiving so far is the weird casting of Seolhyun, who seems too young (and unimpressive) to be pitted against Song Hye-kyo, with someone of Lee Hanee’s cachet relegated to a mother-of-an-adult role.
