Doing the variety show circuit in K-ent is par for the course when promoting dramas but most are just one episode guest starring gigs. Less frequent but more invaluable is when an actor or actress will get a popularity resurgence after becoming a variety show regular whether it’s of the talking, living together, or doing something difficult in a foreign place. Who can forget Lee Seo Jin‘s first outing as the luggage boy in Grandpas Over Flowers, whereas Lee Seung Gi is such a variety veteran it wasn’t nearly as fresh and unusual to see his turn in Noonas Over Flowers.
Jang Geun Seok has been focusing his entertainment career overseas for the last few years, in terms of K-ent he’s only done two under the radar dramas in Love Rain and Bel Ami (Pretty Boy). That’s why it’s such a shocker for me to hear that he’s joined the cast of Na PD‘s new variety show Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village, a more remote and heartier cousin to the original incarnation with Seo Jin lugging Taecyeon around the countryside cooking. Also in the Fishing Village cast is Cha Seung Won, forever a variety standout since his Family Outing days, and veteran actor Yoo Hae Jin. This line up, not to mention shipping them out to a far off island to fend for themselves, is so chock for strange dialogue and behavior I’m totally dying to check it out.
