The Roy Qiu Resurgence Tour Continues as When a Man Loves Become 6th Highest Grossing TW-movie of All Time, He Gets Best Actor Nomination, and C-netizens Upset about the Mandarin Dub of the Movie

Oh how, like, a decade changes everything lol. TW-actor Roy Qiu is having a career best year in 2021, though he’s had plenty good ones before in his nearly 15 year long career. Thanks to the TW-movie When a Man Loves, adapted from the same name Korean movie, it’s nonstop accolades and success his way. His role of the gangster with a soft squishy heart just wanting a chance to love just got him nominated for Best Actor at the prestigious Taipei Film Festival, and he’s the favorite to win among a murder’s row of nominees in Chris Wu, Chang Chen, Tony Yang, and Umin Boya. The movie was still raking in the Taiwan box office as of last week, becoming the 6th highest grossing domestic movie of all time, though COVID-19 has fully shut down Taiwan now so all theaters are closed in the foreseeable weeks. The movie is getting a Mainland China release and C-fans are super excited, totally un-cancelling Roy after his messy breakup with Tang Yan nearly a decade ago. The C-netizens are not happy though, that the movie is getting a Mainland China dub where Roy dubs over his own dialogue which was a mixture of Taiwanese and Mandarin Chinese spoken with a strong Taiwanese accent with now Beijing accented Mandarin Chinese. Everyone wants the release to keep the original dialogue and I’m glad artistic original voice is getting such support over for this movie as Roy’s dialogue has been called one of the shining points of what makes the film touching and authentic.

  • I never quite get why China must always dub over voices into their Mandarin Chinese. Even their own people hate it. Frankly, I find Taiwanese Mandarin easier to understand.

    • Because China put importance into standard mandarin. If they aren't strict with it you'll see in a decade the way people speak will be worse than now just like Taiwan. I really don't like how they speak aren't standard, it's so distinct. Well truthfully, the southern people sound more like Taiwanese with all their unstandard pronunciation, but if we let even the entertainment to let go the standard chinese, I'm afraid lots of children will be affected and the next generation will sound more like Taiwanese which is horrendous.

      • Agree. Proper CCTV mandarin is actually very easy to understand. It’s the offical way to pronounce and it is the way it should be learnt. If everyone sounded Taiwanese, gosh it would be rather annoying. Honestly not the biggest fan of the accent despite me having one due to my mandarin teacher was Taiwanese.

  • The main reason I don't watch C-dramas is the dubbing, I hate it. It's really bad the most of the time, either the dubbing actor is bad or the effects on the voice are weird. Can I have Jasper Liu's voice in Use for My Talent?

I'm happy for Roy Qiu, I like him :)

    • They dub most ancient dramas due to the noise in the background, it’s hard to get good quality sound otherwise. They have pulleys and everything does the martial arts and good luck editing those out in post production. Actors (most) these days dub it themselves anyway which is so much better.

  • I went to watch the preview just to see whats it about and to hear him. You're right. He cannot have it dubbed into a Beijing Mandarim accent.

First off his voice is distinctive. And 2nd I recoil at the thought of the Taiwanese Hokkien being made into a Beijing Hokkien. Is there sucb a thing as speaking Hokkien with a Beijing accent? My brain does not compute.

The scenes impact will be lost.

  • I don't like dubbing, I like the distinct regional dialect where the actors/ actresses came from, it makes watching a series more stand out. I understand the proper pronunciation but it's become problematic when every series you watch, the dialogues delivered in the same pronunciation manner.
This kind of bother me, why pull Tang Yan into the post, she moved on and found her happiness. Whatever happen to him presently got nothing to do with her.
