Yang Mi and Gong Jun Start Filming Highly Anticipated C-drama Adaptation of Fantasy Anime Fox Spirit Matchmaker
The musical chairs combination of C-actor and C-actress pairings has landed on Yang Mi and Gong Jun for the high profile fantasy C-drama project Fox Spirit Matchmaker (涂山小红娘). The two will star in one of the three segments in the source anime’s story line called the Yue Hong chapter (月红篇) taken from the names of their two characters. She’s Tu Shan Hong Hong a member of the fox tribe and he’s Dong Fang Yue Chu a member of the spiritual Dong Fang tribe. C-netizens are really excited about this live action adaptation but opinion is split on whether Yang Mi and Gong Jun are the right leads cast. I think they will be great I’m just a little surprised Yang Mi took the role since she’s playing the exact same fox spirit goddess she played in Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles Peach Blossoms and there is bound to be comparison.
neither are exciting actors to me so we’ll get the usual pretty faces with little to no chemistry
Why do I feel Gong Jun will be more seductive and prettier than Yang Mi in this drama…
Well there was nothing “foxy” about her role in Eternal Love anyway; they are just similar backgrounds.
Also, the reason why this drama is anticipated is because the female side of the cast is shaping up nicely. They managed to snag a couple of B-list 90-ers in supporting roles. When you have a strong female cast you can attract the casual viewers.
Yang Mi looks so pretty in costume dramas.
Unfortunately, nothing is new with Yang Mi. She takes on projects that are practically the same. She doesn’t challenge herself, not have the desire to explore other acting avenue. On top of that, for a veteran c-ent artist, she has become so unwatchable. The sincerely in acting is absent in her recent dramas, and she acts very consciously.
It’s boring, to say the least. No new offering from her. I don’t know if GJ can help carry the drama. Let’s see.
Yang Mi might be formulaic, but Gong Jun is straight up a horrible actor. Him carrying the drama? Seriously?
lmao seriously I feel like people have only ever seen word of honor and think he’s good even though he does nothing in that drama except look pretty. he is very awkward and wooden in everything I’ve seen him in
I feel a lot of people who watch BL have ridiculous assessment of the lead actors’ acting skills. Other than Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong, they all suck.
Gong Jun can’t act to save his life, what exactly would he be carrying? Everything he has done before and after his queerbaiting drama has flopped. You can’t be serious, he is literally one of the worst actors out there.
Wow, so many people dislike Yang Mi here haha. I do feel Yang Mi’s acting has been very formulaic these past few years but then, when has it NOT been? The acting opportunities for actresses in c-ent are quite limited to certain tropes anyways.
But Yang Mi is golden in historical/traditional costume dramas. Something about her in xianxia/xuanhuan dramas that will always draw viewers in including myself. She’s just so satisfying to watch. And her solid status in c-ent is a testament to that.
@Charmin
I didn’t say he will for sure carry the drama. I don’t follow him but know he has some popularity in China. I said I don’t know if he can help carry the drama so let’s see. I’ve read about his not so good acting, so combined with YM’s unwatchable acting, only their popularity would matter.
For Chinese costume dramas, it is always the production – cinematography, colors, clothes, action, special effects – which is the main reason for success. The spice is a beautiful cast. Dialogue is always dubbed. Both YM and GJ are professional artists graduated from reputable acting schools. There is no need for anyone to carry the drama as long as no big mistake happens. I think the most important is how the director executes the story.
Not all actors use dubbers. Some actors use/dub with their own voice, which makes a huge difference in the quality of the drama. YM has to use dubbers; her voice does not sound good for any drama. The “prettiness” of c dramas as the primary selling point no longer holds true. Yes, directing makes a big difference, but with GJ’s wooden acting (as some people say), and YM’s as per usual offering, there’s limited chance to sell the drama outside of their normal fanbase. That’s why I say, this is definitely YM’s drama, but nothing is new here, except for the story. Boring to say the least.
