Deng Wei is the Male Lead of Director Guo Jing Ming’s Next Drama Bai Yao Pu with Various Female Leads in Discussion
Lol, this could be the top of Director Guo Jing Ming‘s most epic assembly of good looking flower vases into one drama. His next project will be the fantasy period drama Bao Yao Pu 百妖谱 or Hundred Demon Records. The male lead is almost certainly going to be Deng Wei and current talks are around the female lead. Reportedly discussions are ongoing with actresses Yang Chao Yue, Peng Xiao Ran, and Cheng Xiao, not for all three to be in the drama but that could happen, the talks are for one of the three to be the female lead. Director Guo is known for being highly selective on the visuals (looks) of stars in his dramas and I guess I just have to disagree with his idea of who has strong visuals based on his past dramas haha. Anyhoo, all three of the actresses mentioned would absolutely jump at this drama so let’s see who lands it.

If it does happen who do you think would be the female lead or will it simply be a harem? I would think the first two female actresses would be chosen over the third but probably the second? Sounds messy if you ask me lol. All three are so so in acting.
Tbh I’m not picky on acting so looks is more important to me in especially when it comes to idol dramas.
Both should coexist but the implications on looks in idol dramas are strong. So far I have not seen any where the appearance of the characters has not been emphasized, even in the support ones.
and that’s why it makes me laugh when they try to cast average actors to play gorgeous characters from the novels lol and then in the plot they keep mentioning how ethereal they are but I don’t see that and even the actors who play sidekick look better lol. maybe the exception was Mark Chao in Eternal Love. he had strong acting chops but if neither visuals nor nuanced performance is offered, what’s the point? like why?
@Alina: I agree. Last year I was called a hater from all sides just because I commented that a certain actor didn’t fit the character description, and with the Chinese population being over a billion, it seemed crazy to me that they acted as if there were no other options. LOL.
LOL. As much as Mark Chao is considered a good actor, his visuals were also the reason why I couldn’t finish Eternal Love. The novel, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, is very popular in China. In the book, while Yang Mi’s character Bai Qian’s beauty was publicly recognized in the heavenly realms , Ye Hua (MC’s character) was considered the most handsome one in the fairy world. I had trouble reconcile with the concept of so-called “PS-ish acting” lol. Therefore, I had hard time rooting for him after reading the web novel.
For those who don’t know the original sources or the visual standard for this type of works, they will be indifferent to the casting (I saw a lot of this in relation to The Double due to Wu Jin Yan sice her looks and age didn’t fit the character ), and those who are unhappy about the alterations in the adaptations, they probably won’t watch them. Those are two interesting perspectives to me. I enjoyed The Double, but if I had read the novel first, I wonder if my appreciation would have been affected. What I find silliest is that screenwriters don’t modify the dialogues so that their actor/actress on the ordinary side doesn’t have to be described as a beauty here, there, in heaven, in hell. LOL. Why highlight a bad casting with descriptions that clash like water and oil?
The Fuck. It’s a female-centric show where the female character is the main one. The guys are all just supporting characters. Why would you choose the male lead??? Another series about a big woman ruined. Better to stick to Donghua. Honestly, i don’t like him either. This is a good thing everyone he was not to cast are bad actors. Not gonna watch.
That’s what I’ve been saying for a long time. Is there a big case where an actress has demanded that MORE scenes be added to her in a male-centric drama, or that she be promoted to protagonist/lead when her role is supportive? LOL.
I have been seeing this for years now. Even with the screenwriters taking away merits from the female characters in the adaptations to give them to the male ones so that the actors don’t whine. Like in Rise Of Phoenixes. And that’s why it turned out to be draggy.😂
I liked Rise of Phoenixes, I just really hated the ending.
@Raya: The ending is also related to the changes I mentioned ever since Ni Ni’s character in the drama was level-headed and only when it served the plot. Contrary to the cunning anti-heroine that she is in original source.
The production wanted a well-known and respected name in the industry, so they accepted Chen Kun’s conditions (the female lead is the protagonist in the novel, but in the drama it shifted to the male POV, removing important events, connections, and actions). It was all for nothing, as the TV ratings and reviews fell below the expected average.
The Double didn’t overshadow the female lead, and Wang Xing Yue shone on his own merits.
another funny thing is that the drama’s audience ended up rooting for the FL anyways. TROP is a monotonous and predictable drama that overseas audiences tend to hype because they have a superiority complex for saying that they watch “serious” dramas.
No need to watch the drama: the acting will be mediocre and the plot nonexistent.
Just look at the pretty posters and buy it a high rating on Douban.
Normally I don’t interfere in other users’ opinions but it has been difficult for me to be indifferent to yours. LOL. I find it curious and comical that you have praise for Esther Yu, while criticizing mediocre actors. Contradictory standards.😂
He’s so gorgeous. I need more dramas of him
Deng Wei looked way better before his face was slimmed down (don’t know what term to use for when it seems that faces have shrunk horizontally): https://p5.itc.cn/q_70/images01/20230605/e6648f2203814feca9d0ea4480e8dd5c.jpeg
I remember him in Miss The Dragon.
To me it looks like it’s a jaw reduction to make it look like a V. But I am not an expert who can speak from her experience. LOL. It’s just my impression. Agree, he looked better with his fuller face – there was more balance. The last time I saw Deng Wei was in LYF, I was hoping to root for him because I really liked him in MTD, but I ended up doing it for Zhang Wan Yi who gave a better and good performance overall.
I like him. He has some spunk to him. When he acts, he doesn’t seem hyper aware that he’s beautiful, thus, he actually comes off swoony. Lol. I still hope the story and execution is good.
