Kim Eun Sook’s tvN Drama Goblin Completes Casting and Script Reading Scheduled for this Friday — 11 Comments

  1. It’s interesting how KES’s dramas here are described as principally vehicles for “charismatic male leads”. I would argue that the success of her shows is much more depended on the quality of the female leads. Of her recent shows KES’s biggest hits – Secret Garden (24.4 % average rating) and Descendants of the Sun (28.5 %) – both had strong lead actresses (Ha Ji-won and Song Hye-kyo). In contrast, the two recent dramas that failed to break the 20% barrier, A Gentleman’s Dignity and The Heirs, both sported comparably weaker female actresses as leads (Kim Ha-neul and Park Shin-hye) – even while having two of Korea’s biggest male stars to front the production (Jang Dong-gun and Lee Min-ho).

I have a good feeling about Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun. Of course, being on cable, it will not break 20%. But the two stars will shine I think.

    • “I would argue that the success of her shows is much more depended on the quality of the female leads.” – Very well said, I totally agree.

  2. tvN might be showing good dramas but still it is a cable channel with lower ratings. I still don’t get why would a ratings-oriented writer like Kim Eun Sook (however good or bad her works may be) choose a cable channel for her drama ?

  3. Lee Dong Wook is my first favorite Korean actor who got me into the Korean dramas for so many years, can’t remember how many times have watched My Girl and still find Dong Wook extremely charming! A little awkward to see him here as a supporting role though but looking forward to seeing him shining again. And as a new fan of Gong Yoo, can’t wait to see Goblin.
