It’s nice to come across low key happy pictures to keep the mood bright during the weekend. On the evening of August 23rd, affianced celebrity acting couple Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young tried to sneak out of South Korea to fly to Spain to shoot their engagement pictures. They were probably too busy to pay attention to the news … Continue reading →
Oh Kim Eun Sook, please don’t make me smack you down early over what is really a lame attempt to be cool. The English title for the already unwieldy sounding Those Who Wear the Crown, Withstand the Weight: The Heirs has been revealed. It’s going to be called Heritors. No, that is not a typo or unintentionally misspelled Korglish. It’s … Continue reading →
The modern day sequel Bu Bu Jing Qing to the popular time-travel period drama Bu Bu Jing Xin finished filming a few months ago and is comfortably ensconced in post-production. It’s not scheduled to air until 2014, but that hasn’t stopped the production company Tangren from doing a slew of early promotions. There was a concept teaser, the most dreary … Continue reading →
If you do something with heart and intelligence, it transcends its genre and pulls in more than the usual suspects. I normally never watching Korean variety shows since I barely have enough time to watch dramas let alone expand my plate. But the hit new cable variety show Grandpas Over Flowers is pure crack magic. This thing is better than … Continue reading →
I’m not trying to hype up Heirs or give it excessive mentions but it really is the most fascinating upcoming K-drama purely for the hot mess potential. I’m also wondering if all the legions of fanboys and fangirls of the leads will turn on each other if the drama sucks and point fingers. Because that would be some potential epic … Continue reading →
The which-rich-girl-is-she casting confusion over Kim Ji Won and Krystal of f(x) playing which second female lead in the upcoming Heirs still hasn’t been officially confirmed. Though all signs point to Krystal playing the ex-girlfriend of Lee Min Ho and getting a future love line with Kang Min Hyuk, while Kim Ji Won plays the current fiancee of Lee Min Ho and rival … Continue reading →
Song Joong Ki is heading off to the army in less than 5 days and he’s leaving on a crest of a career high with a critically well-received drama Nice Guy (The Innocent Man) and a box office hit movie The Werewolf Boy. It’s sad that he couldn’t squeeze in one more project before he left, and it would have … Continue reading →
You won’t believe the numbers of emails and comments I’ve gotten in the last week asking me to (1) recap King of Lan Ling, or (2) share my first impressions of it. I’ve been meaning to write about it but strangely there have been quite a few C-dramas that have turned out really watcheable recently in addition to King of … Continue reading →
Writer So Hyun Kyung is one of those rare K-drama screenwriters that has the ability to make her dramas keep getting better as it chugs along. It’s quite easy to come up with a concept but to execute it well is really the critical element that is sorely in short supply these days. Two Weeks might end up being my … Continue reading →
I’ve been trying to retrain my brain to tolerate fantasy wuxia dramas, which to me is like the untalented sibling of the overachieving star of the family. It substitutes special effects for story, dumbing down characters because magic and make believe elements can be thrown in to solve any problem. But once my darling rising young C-actor Li Yi Feng … Continue reading →
The netizens in South Korea are notoriously judgmental and not afraid to unleash their ire at whatever is the hot topic du jour. When it comes to their celebrities, mostly they require vanilla complacency in their public persona coupled with a hard working ethos. In previous years, some of the topics that have gotten celebs in hot water include tax … Continue reading →
This drama? Is so good, so so good. Quite simply put, it treats the viewers like we’re family and we’re all in this ride together. There is no pandering, it asks us to accept blips in the road when things don’t quite measure up, and it warms us in the feeling of caring about something rather than dispassionately watching with … Continue reading →
While the saying goes that there is no bad publicity, there is something called too much hype. Funnily enough, I don’t think either SBS, writer Kim Eun Sook, or any one of her cast members of the upcoming drama Heirs is trying to hype up the drama (yet). The hype is all fan generated, and we are probably all doing … Continue reading →
