Bigger isn’t necessarily better is a true adage in many situations, and almost certainly applies to dramas. Those aiming for bigger often find the collapse to be equally thunderous, which can make for entertaining watches for the exact opposite reasons of rubbernecking the hot mess. Premiering this April 3rd is the huge budget period C-drama God of War Zhao Zi Long (also known as God of War Zhao Yun or Chinese Hero Zhao Zi Long), based on the life of famed military general Zhao Yun (nee Zi Long) during the late Han/early Three Kingdoms era. This is vastly fictionalized, with a Zhao Zi Long played by pretty boy Lin Geng Xin and his love interest the willowly Yoona of SNSD. Historically realistic this is not, but the sprawling supporting cast also including Kim Jung Hoon, Godfrey Gao, Yan Yi Kuan, Jia Qing, and many others certainly makes for a buffet of reasons to check it out this week. It’s fairly safe to bet that the drama will bring in ratings and recoup the cost with overseas licensing deals regardless of quality. Continue reading
