The most underrated K-drama of the year thus far has to be The Blade and Petal (Sword and Flower). There is no accounting for taste but this one is absolutely a work of cinematic art and acting prowess regardless of whether it’s your cup of tea. I spend two hours a week captivated and mesmerized by intensity and passion that … Continue reading →
How can anyone keep a straight face acting out scenes from Goddess of Fire is beyond me. This is a talented and smart cast so I can imagine the eye-rolling and sighs when everyone gets a new script. Episode 11 finishes up the teacup that keeps tea warm story line by having Gwanghaegun switch out the Yook Do made one … Continue reading →
With the recent spate of mostly lackluster period dramas from both Korea and Japan, I feel like being on a formerly award winning team that is sucking so badly it ought to be demoted to the minor leagues. What gives, drama gods? Period dramas used to be the bread and butter of the drama world – its very fantastical or … Continue reading →
Like it or not, this drama is actually happening. No, I’m not talking about the potentially cringe-worthy Beautiful Man with Jang Geun Seok, though this one might make the same timeslot double the pain for K-drama viewers. This casting has been just confirmed on the down low and not “official”, but this is going to be the final main cast … Continue reading →
Moon Geun Young is one of my favorite K-actresses, for her acting talent and real life smart and sensible personality. So it pains me to watch her in Goddess of Fire because her titular character is that horrifying combination of stupid and sassy. The directing for this drama is so ham-handed that watching Moon Geun Young act akin to miming … Continue reading →
I think I started liking Kim Soo Hyun way before most K-drama viewers. He first caught my eye in Will It Snow For Christmas playing a young Go Soo, and my affection for him was solidified when he played a young Park Sang Min in Giant, an epic drama with a long childhood sequence where all the kid actors were … Continue reading →
Monstar just ended and already I’m re-watching and missing the kids like mad. I actually think the final episode gets better and better on re-watch once its understood what the writer was doing. A lot of questions were answered and what’s left is actually the process of people processing the information and dealing with it over time. The trip up … Continue reading →
Have y’all Cruel City (Heartless City) fans calmed down now from the ending of this amazing drama? Admittedly the ending isn’t for everyone, it wasn’t particularly brutal so that the faint of heart felt gut punched. It gave hope where hope was plausible, and devastation when the ultimate price had to be paid. There was a news article with a … Continue reading →
My anticipation for The Master’s Sun can be framed as if I’m on a dating website and finds what seems like a perfect match. Looks great on paper, looks great in pictures, sounds fantastic on the phone, write marvelously in emails. All that is left is the in-person meet and greet, so what could go possibly go wrong? Aside from … Continue reading →
After a two-week hiatus from news about He Who Wears the Crown, Withstand the Weight: The Heirs, there is now some movement and added tidbits about the production. There was a second script reading session held at SBS studios on July 31 but nothing has been revealed about who attended or what took place. Park Shin Hye’s agency S.A.L.T. Entertainment … Continue reading →
I’m so happy I checked out Monstar, because it led to one of the most relaxing recapping projects in a long time. No see-sawing emotions, no heightened expectations begetting freefalling disappointment, it was just a very assuring and easy-to-digest drama from beginning to end. The final episode went out with a relative whimper that capped an overall slowdown in the … Continue reading →
Two Weeks is gelling for me more and more as I read the detailed character descriptions and now have watched the long trailer. There is this bleakness about it, and the cinematography evokes a subtle grey blue aura that makes that world seem cold and harsh. It’s written to be a redemption story, one that isn’t necessary done in a … Continue reading →
Good news alert! Don’t you guys love hearing more good news? Remember this past Winter when it was just a depressing unending stream of bad behavior coming out of Korea – the alleged raping, the prescription propofol abuse, the military service scandals. Yeah, I remember and it was not a happy time to follow K-ent. This Summer hasn’t been all … Continue reading →
