Bad Poster, Good Drama

A Koala's Playground Posted on August 3, 2010 by ockoalaAugust 3, 2010
Giant TV drama ensemble cast poster

Posters for K-dramas are a notoriously fickle beast. There is no consistency in quality, and if I used posters alone to judge a drama I would miss a boatload of interesting works.

Female Friendships in K-dramas Where are the genuine girl-girl friendships in K-dramas, something that can hold a candle to Buffy and Willow in BtVS?

Dude, Who Let You Out Of The House?

A Koala's Playground Posted on July 21, 2010 by ockoalaJuly 21, 2010
Split-screen: young man and smiling woman

While there are been many instances of horrific fashion choices committed to celluloid in the history of K-dramas, merely to highlight fugly fashion would ultimately be an empty endeavor.

A Very Bad Hair Day

Smiling person wearing red scarf in snow

Moon Geun Young has drop-dead gorgeous hair in that promotional picture for Cinderella Unni. It’s so perfect, both for the drama and for her facial features. Good hair – it is easier said than done.

Good Actors Picked Bad

A Koala's Playground Posted on July 19, 2010 by ockoalaJuly 19, 2010
Seated man in dark pinstripe suit, contemplative

Why is Lee Byung Hun on the front of a post about good actors who keep picking bad projects? Because Stormshadow here CAN pick a project, and I thought I’d start with a successful example for others to emulate.

Sympathy for Mr. Sexy

Man in suit leaning on glass railing

I was going to title this post without the extra “y” at the end of the last word. So, you though this blog was going to be PG, or at most PG-13. Well, you thought wrong!

Bao Chou – The Revenge Meter in Dramas

A Koala's Playground Posted on July 9, 2010 by ockoalaJuly 9, 2010
Two men in ornate Qing dynasty robes

My drama chingu Serendipity once wrote on Dramabeans OT: “It was HK sagas which taught me that essential Chinese phrase, to be screeched at the top of one’s lungs, preferably while running a sword through swathes of people, “Bao chou! Bao chou! Wo yao bao chou!” or “Revenge! Revenge! I want revenge!”

My TW & C-Drama Allergies

Smiling young man wearing scarf and necklace

By popular request (*cough* yuan89 *cough*), I’ve quickly compiled a list of My Other Allergies. These are the actors and actresses from TW- and C-dramas which I avoid like the plague.

My K-Drama Allergies

A Koala's Playground Posted on July 7, 2010 by ockoalaJuly 7, 2010
Two people sitting on yellow park bench

This is both a companion post to the list of My Obsessions and a counterpoint to my post on memorable performances. People have their own taste and tics, resulting in some folks fangirling certain performers no one else seems to like, or conversely leaving others scratching their heads over why certain performers are so popular.

As the title clearly indicates, this is a companion piece to the post I did about the memorable and heart-warming parental figures in K-dramas.

I sometimes live in drama land for stretches at a time. When I emerge from a drama haze, I find that another holiday has passed or I’ve missed yet another birthday.

K-dramas and the fascination with the Love-That-Dare-Not-Speaketh-It’s-Name:

After watching K-dramas for over three years (wow, has it really been that long?), I’ve noticed an oft-used subject matter is the kinda-sorta-maybe romance between two people who have some sort of relationship with each other that should preclude any romantic involvement.
