This is an interesting article that taps into a popular Chinese cultural myth and might have some nuggets of anecdotal truth to it. A Taiwanese newspaper recently wrote about four of the most popular actresses in the Chinese-speaking entertainment world in a different context beyond their own popularity and acting successes. There is a commonly held belief that a man … Continue reading →
This is a worth reading commentary from a veteran Korean television critic on the recent batch of idols acting in K-dramas. Published in entertainment news MBN, the critic rated the performances from the August-September dramas where veteran to newbie idol-actors were given roles of varying prominence. To now one’s surprise, and I’ll even argue there can be no disagreement here, … Continue reading →
It’s been awhile since I’ve been spurred to watch a weekend K-drama and What’s With the Family kick-started my interest in the genre again. Upcoming weekend drama Birth of a Beauty doesn’t really fit the usual weekend fare centered around makjang family events, and the drama currently in the time slot Endless Love apparently fits that description to a T. … Continue reading →
After two long years away from the urge to recap a J-dorama, the arrival of the romance-centric love triangle Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu (Today I Take the Day Off Work) flips the dormant switch right when I was mourning the lack of cracktastic offerings from Japan. Thanks to the collective charisma of Ayase Haruka, Fukushi Sota, and Tamaki Hiroshi, KwKY is … Continue reading →
The entertainment news cycle has been busy with big name drama castings and considerations lately but one name hasn’t been raised in the mix. Lee Min Ho delivered one of the highest rated K-dramas last year in Heirs, which is still minting money by staying hot on many large streaming portal rankings, but doesn’t appear to be in a rush … Continue reading →
At the end of the day show business is still a commodity and the show must go on. That makes the producers of the Chinese version of the hit K-movie Miss Granny pretty darn savvy to start releasing movie stills the very week that one of it’s stars generates massive headlines. The C-version is also called Miss Granny with the … Continue reading →
This episode of My Lovely Girl was so static that the bore factor went through the roof. The entire episode was spent on Hyun Wook and Se Na pining for each other without anything else of importance happening. The only time I perked up, and the drama momentum made an uptick, was when Shi Woo shows up. He’s the shining … Continue reading →
This news will be exciting for folks who like dense and darker dramas. SBS is really spacing out the serious and the fluff on alternating schedules, what with sageuk Secret Door on its Mon-Tues slot while the throwback romance drama My Lovely Girl sits in the Wed-Thurs time. Even though Secret Door is still in the earlier stages of airing … Continue reading →
Bom-yi dropped into Poo-reun’s life like a gift from the heavens. The woman is everything the younger girl wants to be: fun, funny, knowledgeable, courageous, not to mention very pretty when she smiles. Just looking at her, she seems like she would smell very nice, too. What Bom-yi provides Poo-reun is an ally she can lean on and commiserate with, … Continue reading →
What did I say about 2015 being the year of the mental illness K-dramas? At this point I’m losing count of how many upcoming K-dramas have one main lead suffering from some sort of mental affliction. Let’s add another to the list, shall we? Kim Soo Hyun‘s agency has confirmed that he’s considering the upcoming K-drama Doctor Frankenstein. After Doctor … Continue reading →
SBS is sure moving fast but who could blame them when so much is at stake in crafting a buzzworthy upcoming drama. The television ratings are abysmal these days even taking into account streaming viewer loss, all the networks desperately need a prime time hit and a few of the upcoming dramas have a shot at winning the viewers over … Continue reading →
It’s strange how My Lovely Girl (My Lovable Girl) captures my fancy in ways where I’m interested but not personally over invested. As far as love triangles go, I love both legs equally and see no need to play favorites. Yay for more love to go around, right? When Hyun Wook and Se Na are together I bask in their … Continue reading →
This new J-dorama is coming in very low profile with the promotions but it’s high on my personal interest radar. The NTV dorama Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu (Today I’m Not Going to Work) is adapted from the popular shoujo manga of the same name and stars Ayase Haruka, Fukushi Sota, and Tamaki Hiroshi in an interesting love triangle of sorts. … Continue reading →
