My gut feeling is that Jaejoong is one of those idol-actors who will always need to overcome his too pretty exterior and ignominious start to acting. Much like Eric is forever being called an idol-actor despite being a critically lauded seasoned actor for over ten years now. Jaejoong has a looooong ways to go before approaching Eric level transition but … Continue reading →
With the 2014 SBS Drama Awards, another prolific if underwhelming in quality year wraps up in K-dramaland. There wasn’t an underlying reason I saved this network for last in coverage, MBC went first and I only had time to write about the KBS awards before passing out sick as a dog after watching the new year’s fireworks light off. I … Continue reading →
The two multiple personality K-dramas going head-to-head to start off 2015 won’t be premiering at the same time. Kill Me Heal Me will arrive on MBC on January 7th while SBS airs Hyde, Jekyll, Me (official drama title) two weeks later on January 21st. Leaving the gate earlier doesn’t guarantee KMHM ratings success, but if it does hook the audience … Continue reading →
It feels like the production of Kill Me Heal Me hit rock bottom when Lee Seung Gi and Lim Ji Yeon pulled out at the last minute, and since then everything has been on the up and up. It’s still a long shot to work, what with the story involving a male lead with 7 different personalities and his romance … Continue reading →
Despite being the perennial prime time ratings loser in 2014, the KBS Drama Awards was heads and tails better than what MBC put on the night before in both fashion, star power, and actually awarding quality acting. Of course not every deserving performance got recognized but the network tried and didn’t pander as much to promoting the young and pretty. Veteran … Continue reading →
If I didn’t know how smoldering Kingone Wang could be onscreen opposite his leading ladies in any drama, I would be freaking out right now based on how terribly awkward he is doing the promo rounds with Kirsten Jen for upcoming SETTV Sunday night drama Someone Like You (Chinese title Hearing Happiness). He looks alternately confused and sullen, even when … Continue reading →
The 2014 MBC Drama Awards mostly went off without a hitch, other than the Jaejoong last minute inexplicable no-show hiccup and all the winners being as predicted to make the evening feel rather dull. The fashion parade was more interesting for me what with the sequins and lace everywhere and the stark contrast between white/gold versus black. The Daesang went … Continue reading →
I’m going to believe nothing can keep on out-randoming the performing line ups for Chinese new year television specials, whether it’s for Lunar new year celebrations or the Gregorian new year extravaganzas. The fact that it keeps involving Lee Min Ho leaves me scratching my head. Last year he performed in front of billions at the CCTV Lunar new year … Continue reading →
Normally this wouldn’t merit a standalone post but this particular occurrence is so last minute and egregious it bugs me enough to write about it. The network drama awards are a show like any other and tickets go on sale to the public to attend and sit in the back while the entertainers sit at round tables in the front. … Continue reading →
MBC must’ve sent the costume coordinator for Kill Me Heal Me out to buy an entire shopping basket full of eyeliner. At the rate that Ji Sung is going through it to whenever the leader of Cha Do Hyun’s six other personalities comes out to play, that might not even be enough. All of Do Hyun’s other personalities have names … Continue reading →
I’m still mulling over the turn hard left direction Pinocchio took in the last episode 14. I’ve enjoyed all the twists and turns so far even if most of the events hinge on massive coincidences and what feels like three degrees of separation. It’s rough but more satisfying watching a story based on bad luck combined with bad decisions rather … Continue reading →
After a few weeks of who’s going and who’s not going, the year end major three Korean network drama awards shows have ironed out the attendee list. There are surprises and expected absences so I’ll started with the upside first. Jeon Ji Hyun is the shocker of the night, coming out of her beauty hibernation to attend the SBS year … Continue reading →
Looks like I’m starting off 2015 more interested in the upcoming Chinese-language dramas than K-dramas. I’m dying for the TW-drama Someone Like You to start (please be good!) in early January while across the Strait there is upcoming C-drama My Sunshine adapted from the popular online novel Silent Separation (何以笙箫默 He Yi Sheng Xiao Mo). I actually read the original novel … Continue reading →
