Cable is where it’s at, baby! I like Jae Hee so its with great pain and a sense of the absurd to see his post military acting projects hit upon one turd after another. First he picked Hooray for Love, and then dropped out when he hurt his back. Then came the terrible Color of Woman followed by the slaptastic OTP-musical-chairs crazy May Queen. And who can ever forget his “role” in Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love, a second male lead that didn’t show up until more than halfway through the drama and then had 5 minutes of screen time per episode thereafter. Maybe he’s exhausted his bad luck and the next one will be a charm. He’s the male lead for the upcoming jTBC cable weekend drama called The Firstborn. That sounds like some ominous horror movie title, I know, and perhaps the better title would be The Eldest. It’s a period piece set in the 1960s about five orphaned siblings raised by the eldest sister and each achieves success in life. Yoon Jung Hee (probably most well known for playing the female lead opposite Park Shi Hoo in the weekend drama Family’s Honor) plays the firstborn, the eldest of five siblings that raises them to become success stories after the death of their parents. The younger siblings are played by Jo Yi Jin, Yoo Hae Jung, Noh Jung Hee, and Kang UI Sik. Also in the cast is Oh Yoon Ah and Jang Mi Hee. Jae Hee plays the male lead and love interest of eldest sibling Yoon Jung Hee’s character. The drama airs in September after War of Flowers and is scheduled to run for 50-episodes. Directing is the veteran PD who directed the hilarious time travel drama Thousand Year Love with So Ji Sub and Sung Yuri (it must be watched for the unintentional hilarity) but also helmed First Love of the Crown Prince and My Woman. Writing is also a veteran scriptwriter who did If Tomorrow Comes and Dandelion Family. The network jTBC has been the home to a contender for my best drama of the year with Cruel City (Heartless City), and also aired one of my all-time favorite dramas in I Live in Cheongdamdong, not to mention quality fare like Childless Comfort, Queen In Soo, and A Wife’s Credentials. Check out the cast and the first stills of the kid actors below. Continue reading

There are no words to adequately express my anger on Jae Hee‘s behalf for the fate that befell him in Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love. Forget that he was already a drama and movie leading man for many years … Continue reading
The powers that be over at SBS are really the sole culprit I blame for the sudden and precipitous decline in narrative and visual quality for Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love. The cast is still delivering swimmingly (aside from … Continue reading
Where is Chi Soo orabeoni? As Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love has captured my heart and interest, watching it without the full main cast introduced feels like eating a meal where one critical dish is missing. Reading the synopsis … Continue reading
As much as I’m enthralled with the current universe of Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love, I am seriously on pins and needles waiting for second male lead Jae Hee to show up. And based on the just released stills … Continue reading
The upcoming sageuk Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love delivers its promotional material like one step forward, two steps back, then two steps forward, one step back. I can’t figure out if its going to be good, if I should … Continue reading
Korea has been in the throes of older woman-younger man drama pairings for years so I’m pretty inured to it all. Unless its totally incongruous to me, for the most part if the storyline and the chemistry sells it then … Continue reading
I love it when high-profile and big-budgeted primetime K-dramas go head-to-head with the same premiere date. When dramas airing on the same time slot have staggered premieres, it makes it harder to gauge audience interest since a drama with a … Continue reading
Well……this outta be interesting. SBS Mon-Tues is off to a melodrama start with Yawang (Queen of Ambition) starring Su Ae and Kwon Sang Woo, but the network is getting my interest up for the follow up drama which sounds all … Continue reading
When Jae Hee got out of the military two years ago, he was one of the few actors to not take on an acting gig straightaway, and in fact it was over a year later than he chose to return … Continue reading
When I first heard about May Queen, it sounded like a potential Giant. It’s not, it’s stupid beyond belief. It could be stupid and sprawling like East of Eden, but it isn’t either. The whole poor girl destined to reach … Continue reading
It’s been years since a weekend K-drama hooked me, and maybe May Queen will buck that trend. It’s not that I don’t like family dramas with a good dose of makjang, I’m just always running around on weekends and new … Continue reading
For the first time ever, I’m more interested in a K-drama for its child cast than adult one. Which is a good thing, because the upcoming 32-episode MBC weekend drama May Queen appears to have a expansive child cast that will … Continue reading
