Nothing screams dead heat of Summer than a nighttime VIP movie premiere in Seoul where all the stars attending were glistening with the combination of BB cream and sweat. Blotting paper for all! It was a parade of actors and actresses at the star-studded movie premiere for Cold Eyes (otherwise known as Surveillance or Stakeout or The Watchers), the thriller … Continue reading →
Good lord, can I get this right now or do I really have to wait another month? The upcoming tvN cops-and-spirits melodrama Who Are You released the first official stills of the three leads So Yi Hyun, Taecyeon, and Kim Jae Wook. I promptly fell in love. All three of them look so gorgeous its unreal, though only one plays … Continue reading →
Not all dramas are created equal but I think to think everything starts off on the same blank piece of paper with a concept. Lately cable networks have consistently been more innovative and entertaining than the Big Three (SBS, MBC, KBS), and by all objective measures doing so by a long shot. Lately most mainstream dramas can’t even start off … Continue reading →
Is it surprising that a glimpse of Kim Bum in his version of the sageuk mane of glory could revive my flagging interest in Goddess of Fire Jeongi? I ought to feel a dash ashamed for the superficiality but who has time to waste on that when it’s smiling dimpled Kim Bum doing his own warrior interpretation! Pretty soon we’ll … Continue reading →
Two much talked about Mon-Tues K-dramas ended today and I’m not going to say “I told you so” to those who stuck around for the entire journey, but even in my jaded and zero expectation left imagination I could not possibly have come up with more inane and unsatisfying endings than what these two delivered as a one-two punch. Spoilers … Continue reading →
Listen up folks, I think we have found the current front runner for worst drama posters of 2013. Please take your exalted place at the front of the line Scandal: That Very Shocking and Immoral Incident. First of all, the fact that this darn drama can’t be satisfied with just calling itself Scandal and has to add the mouthful afterwards … Continue reading →
Ooooh, looking good Empire of Gold. Me likely, though one official poster is much better than the other. Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love ends this week and SBS must be breathing a sigh of relief to move on to more promising pastures with Empire of Gold transitioning the Mon-Tues time slot for the network back to the modern drama. … Continue reading →
I hope I can keep starting off every recap of Monstar with the same sentence, that this was the best episode yet. It need not sound repetitive if true, and since this is a once-a-week 12-episode drama, aiming to keep reaching higher isn’t a formidable feat but does require a firm grasp of the overall narrative. Episode 6 was an … Continue reading →
To say my feelings towards Gu Family Book is like an odd little duck might be the best way to describe it. Clearly I was disappointed it failed to live up to my hopes, but then that really never bothered me too much other than a shrug and a wish for better next time around for Lee Seung Gi. Whereas … Continue reading →
This is going to be a busy week in K-drama land. Two high-profile Mon-Tues dramas are wrapping up in Gu Family Book and Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love, while next weekend a sprawling cast weekend drama Goddess of Marriage premieres. In between I’m toggling Cruel City (Heartless City) to start off the week with the sweet kids-bonding-through-music Monstar to … Continue reading →
We’re less than one week from the premiere of the next SBS weekend drama called Goddess of Marriage and the show has pretty much released all the main stills and teasers that reveal the general gist of what to expect. This is definitely a weekend drama for sure, with a sprawling cast that are all connected in the usual six-degrees … Continue reading →
I’ve seen my share of odd photo shoot concepts, but for the most part its from the edgier magazines such as Vogue for the ladies, GQ or Details for the men, or perhaps an indie rag or two. InStyle Magazine is probably as straitlaced as they come, like the Toyota Camry of the publishing world when it comes to mixing … Continue reading →
When watching a drama live, and keeping an eye on the proceedings ahead of time, it’s impossible not to form an opinion each step of the way. The initial casting creates either an optimism or pessimism depending on the cast, the first stills and teasers give a glimpse of the quality and mood, and the first episode can either be … Continue reading →
