It’s August so time for a ghostly K-drama to arrive much as one always does every August during the traditional ghost month of the Asian lunar calendar. Last year there was the double serving of The Master’s Sun and Who Are You but this year comes only one ghostly drama and it’s a fantasy sageuk to boot in the form … Continue reading →
With screenwriter Kim Eun Sook in the news this week with her post-Heirs drama update, naturally it would lead me to wonder what the heck Lee Min Ho has been up to. It’s still a bizarre casting choice for him to play an emo high school student, it worked five years earlier in his break out drama role in Boys … Continue reading →
Visuals are part of a drama’s whole package even if it’s doesn’t play a deciding factor like writing or acting. But bad cinematography, chintzy design, unattractive make up or costuming choices, all of that adds or detracts from the overall appeal. Much like pretty people often get an undeserved boost over the same criteria but less attractive competition, a pretty … Continue reading →
The Fall in Love with Me narrative insanity continues and with it comes the commensurate uptick in ratings which has yielded the most fanservice from the drama cast yet with leading man Aaron Yan going shirtless as per his promise if the ratings broke 2%. That’s so sad, in the past such male lead shirtlessness required ratings to break 5% … Continue reading →
I do plenty of fanservice posts but its almost always for my own fangirling needs. This one is purely a “making the universe a better place” post by highlighting how it was a very very VERY good week for YunJae fans, JYJ fans, and DBSK fans. Former DBSK member and now JYJ member Jaejoong wrapped up his drama Triangle this … Continue reading →
I love Ethan Ruan but personally find his career trajectory a good thing for him but not so much for me. It was his drama works that made me a fan but he’s been exclusively movies for the last few years and none are works I consider fun stuff to watch. It’s award-winning to be sure, such as his fierce … Continue reading →
SETTV has had more hits than misses for me this year. Just the incredible one-two Friday night punch of In a Good Way followed by Pleasantly Surprised (Love Myself or You) has been sublime drama nourishment for the eyes and soul. Pretty people playing interesting characters with a story line that doesn’t insult my intelligence, where do I sign up … Continue reading →
I hope those who are watching Joseon Gunman understand what a rare treat it is to have a double helping of fantastic acting across-the-board from leads to the smallest supporting role together with truly smart writing that isn’t aiming for short term thrills at the expense of longer term narrative building. There are only so many times the hero can … Continue reading →
Only with its most high profile cash cow screenwriter will SBS make an official big announcement as to the confirmation of a time slot for her next drama. Kim Eun Sook is still riding high off the success of Heirs, less as a quality piece and more of a “raking in the dough” project. If it was her only success … Continue reading →
This one totally better not have a bait-and-switch in it. My Yamapi is finally doing a honest to goodness renai so imma hunkering down to soak in all the feels when it arrives. I’ve been waiting and waiting for Yamashita Tomohisa to deliver a drama or movie I can love as much as I love some of his earlier works … Continue reading →
The sky-rocketed popularity of Puff Guo over her two other Dream Girls group members Tia Li and Song Mi Jin makes me wonder how long the group will last. When the group launched three years ago, Tia was the most popular one due to her pretty doll looks and a built in fanbase that considered her the Goddess of Nerds. … Continue reading →
It’s such a pleasure recapping Joseon Gunman, with only interesting and narratively sane things happening in every episode. The revenge plus romantic separation has progressed on equally solid footing and it’s amazing how much better the OTP romance gets now that Soo In is in the know and can help Yoon Kang. This drama delivered on doing compelling angst when … Continue reading →
Well this is interesting. Maybe the better way to say it is “buh?” rather than “hhhhmmm…..” level interesting. Last year’s Baeksang Best Drama award went to KBS for Good Doctor, and while I didn’t watch it the feedback on both the writing and acting was all-over-the-place. Those who loved it praised it like the best thing since K-dramas discovered the … Continue reading →
