Tale of Gumiho 1938 with Lee Dong Wook, Kim So Yeon, and Kim Bum Release First Teaser Poster

A Koala's Playground Posted on April 1, 2023 by ockoalaMarch 31, 2023
Man in a cityscape, mystical atmosphere.

The gumihos are going back in time as the second season of tvN fantasy drama Tale of Gumiho takes the two gumiho brother male leads to 1938 and follows their adventures. Tale of Gumiho 1938 (Tale of the Nine-taled) follows Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum’s characters as they time travel prior to the first drama to the 1930’s period … Continue reading →

Filming Kicks Off for Tale of Gumiho: 1938 Telling the Story Gumiho Brothers Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum Time-traveling to 1938 and Solving a Mystery with Kim So Yeon

A Koala's Playground Posted on May 4, 2022 by ockoalaMay 4, 2022
"Upcoming TV series featuring four actors."

This isn’t a sequel and now it’s not even a true prequel to tvN 2021 fantasy drama Tale of Gumiho (Tale of the Nine-tailed). It’s called Tale of Gumiho:1938 and from the date everyone thought it would deal with the lives of immortal gumiho leads Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum from that era. Now the spoiler is out that … Continue reading →

Kim So Yeon Confirmed as New Female Lead for Tale of Gumiho 2 with Returning Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum

A Koala's Playground Posted on February 23, 2022 by ockoalaFebruary 23, 2022
Woman in a white shirt, thoughtful expression.

I feel like this second season or prequel to tvN drama Tale of Gumiho seems rather superfluous in that it doesn’t address what the diehard fans want in terms of continuation and/or closure. tvN has announced that it will be producing another installment of Tale of Gumiho (Tale of the Nine-tailed) but it won’t be a follow up to where … Continue reading →

Kim So Yeon Offered the Female Lead in the Second Season of tvN Drama Tale of Gumiho Opposite Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum

A Koala's Playground Posted on October 28, 2021 by ockoalaOctober 28, 2021
Woman in elegant white dress, posing confidently.

Hhhmmm, this drama offer seems totally not worthy of her but if she accepts she can only make the drama better. K-actress Kim So Yeon has been tapped as the female lead of the second second of tvN fantasy horror drama Tale of Gumiho, and her agency says she is still considering it. I still can’t imagine anyone other than … Continue reading →

tvN to air Second Season of Tale of Gumiho Set in the Joseon Era with Returning Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum But Replacing Female Lead Jo Boa

A Koala's Playground Posted on September 27, 2021 by ockoalaSeptember 27, 2021
Fantasy drama poster featuring two characters.

Well this is random and I wonder who is the target audience? tvN will be airing a second season of fall 2020’s fantasy romance drama Tale of Gumiho (Tale of the Nine-tailed) which thoroughly confounded me when it aired. There were glimpses of something MORE that could have made the drama work but what aired was just blergh. I liked … Continue reading →

Tale of Gumiho Ends with a Whimper Ruining the Great Start and a Fabulous Second Male Lead

A Koala's Playground Posted on December 3, 2020 by ockoalaDecember 3, 2020
Three people smiling in a casual setting.

Man, the last four episodes of tvN Wed-Thurs drama Tale of Gumiho (Tale of the Nine-tailed) has been as bad as the first two episodes were great. The drama started going downhill after episode 6 when it was clear the two leads had zero romantic onscreen chemistry no matter how angsty the backstory written, and the big bad was just … Continue reading →

It’s Deja Vu to End Episode 12 of Tale of Gumiho and Next Week tvN Will Preempt to Ensure Better Production Quality for Final 4 Episodes

A Koala's Playground Posted on November 12, 2020 by ockoalaNovember 12, 2020
Group of stylish individuals in a photoshoot.

Production quality hasn’t been a problem with Tale of Gumiho, it’s a little cheesy and simplistic with the special efforts but it compensated by nice horror beats. The problem is the story hinges on people NOT talking, keeping important background information and doling it out in dribbles. At the end of episode 12 when Goddess of Underworld Ahjumma yelled out … Continue reading →

Episode 11 of Tale of Gumiho Does a Brotherly Feint as Imoogi Makes His Moves on the Female Lead with Ratings of 4.863%

A Koala's Playground Posted on November 11, 2020 by ockoalaNovember 11, 2020
Emotional scenes between two characters.

Man, Tale of Gumiho is starting to piss me off. So much potential, a great cast, and the plot developments are wildly frustrating. Imoogi (who I shall call Bowl-cut Baddie from now on) is wasting Lee Tae Ri because I cannot discern his modus operandi and frankly I can’t with Lee Yeon either. So much could be avoided with frank … Continue reading →

The Big Bad’s Grand Plan is to Become Lee Yeon in Episode 10 of Tale of Gumiho

A Koala's Playground Posted on November 5, 2020 by ockoalaNovember 5, 2020
Dramatic reunion in traditional Korean attire.

I find Tale of Gumiho still entertaining enough to keep watch but I wish whether from a different casting or a different twist to the story that I cared about the OTP romance because so much danger is tied to it. But alas all I care about is poor Lee Rang who gets dragged through another ringer – his half … Continue reading →

Tale of Gumiho Goes Back Up to 5.113% for Episode 9 Dealing with Loss, Fear, and Hope

A Koala's Playground Posted on November 4, 2020 by ockoalaNovember 4, 2020
Person in a black suit with injuries.

I feel like Tale of Gumiho tries so hard with the fated love/OTP element but it’s actually everything else that works and that central thread just falls for flat. The lack of chemistry between Yeon and Ji Ah continues so episode 9 keeping them apart made it one of the best episodes to date, and their reunion at the end … Continue reading →

Lee Dong Wook Makes the Solomon’s Choice Between Lady Love and Brother in Episode 8 of Tale of Gumiho

A Koala's Playground Posted on October 29, 2020 by ockoalaOctober 29, 2020
Various scenes from a dramatic series.

The inexplicable and bizarre lack of romantic chemistry between the leads in Tale of Gumiho is really dragging down the energy of the drama, but conversely it makes the other parts work harder to keep this thing afloat. Episode 8 is the midway point and got ratings back up to 5.137% and still delivered the good and the dull in … Continue reading →

Tale of Gumiho Ratings Drop Slightly to 4.789% in Episode 7 as Story Plods Along with the Return of the Big Bad and Ji Ah’s Backstory

A Koala's Playground Posted on October 28, 2020 by ockoalaOctober 28, 2020
Couples in professional outfits interacting playfully.

The ratings have been dropping for four consecutive episodes of Tale of Gumiho (Tale of the Nine-tailed) and that’s not a good sign since it’s only episode 7. But I totally understand why and while I will probably watch this through to the end it’s starting to go on FF mostly to see what happened in the past and also … Continue reading →

Tale of Gumiho Drops Below 5% in Ratings for Episode 6 as the Mythology and Prior Life Entanglements are Slowly Doled Out

A Koala's Playground Posted on October 22, 2020 by ockoalaOctober 22, 2020
People in traditional attire interacting in various scenes.

Watching Tale of Gumiho really helps that I have such a long drama watching history to compare to, and it’s the comparison that highlights the strengths and weaknesses of this fantasy K-drama. Episode 6 ratings dropped below 5% for the first time to 4.926% and it’s fitting. This drama is suffering from the writing framing the way that Goblin really … Continue reading →
