I’m ready to put K-drama screenwriter Ha Myung Hee on my shit list now, I’ve concurred with a lot of the criticism lobbed at her for her previous dramas Doctors, High Society and even her earliest works One Warm Word and Can We Get Married. But being flawed doesn’t mean she’s completely sucky but now her attitude makes me think of … Continue reading →
I’ve found a new favorite K-drama and thy name is Black. Such a nondescript name but oh boy such a rich, layered, and unexpectedly hilarious drama that realizes tension and scares can coexist with fish-out-of-water laughter. I’m four weeks late to the party but it gave me a chance to do that marathon thing whereby all the juices get flowing … Continue reading →
I’m still savoring summer tvN medical and time-travel drama Deserving of the Name (Live Up to Your Name), a drama that has undone all the ill will and WTF-kery that Dr. Jin left behind in that specific genre. I can’t decide which of the two leads did better in Kim Nam Gil and Kim Ah Joong, which really means both … Continue reading →
This news post is a week late but it was a trying week in K-ent with the saddest star departure followed by the happiest celebrity wedding, one needs to take a deep breath and get back on track. On October 27th W Korea Magazine held a huge charity bash to benefit breast cancer research and awareness, one of the causes … Continue reading →
I haven’t seen Kim Ji Won since her late spring KBS drama Fight For My Way finished airing, with a relatively successful ratings run as the drama premiered over 10% AGB and mostly went up to end at 13.8% for the final episode. It was her first drama since doing the mega hit Descendants of the Sun, and this time … Continue reading →
Baseball season ended in dramatic fashion this week in the US professional league but in South Korea it’s still fall classic for a country that also loves this sport. Korean actress-idol Suzy made her fourth pre-game celebrity first pitch appearance on the mound since her debut, looking radiant and believably sporty. She’s not so thin that seeing her throw a … Continue reading →
I love the casting and really hate the appropriated drama title, growls to the conflicted first reaction. Cable network OCN continued to peddle in thrillers and procedural fare nicely, with currently airing grim reaper in the body of a detective drama Black with Song Seung Heon and Go Ara doing well in ratings and getting positive audience reviews. OCN is … Continue reading →
The 2017 Korean Popular Culture & Arts Awards took place quietly with a cancelled red carpet due to the passing of beloved veteran leading man Kim Joo Hyuk earlier in the week. The big winners among stars I follow are veterans Park Geun Hyung and Yoon Yeo Jung getting feted with highest Order of Cultural Merits. Three heavyweight male leads … Continue reading →
I find the first pictures of Kim Soo Hyun in military service so adorkable I just have to share, he looks exactly as I pictured he would once he shaved his head and put on the standard army uniform alongside his fellow recruits. The picture above is totally South Korean military recruitment ready, with his pretty boy good looks given … Continue reading →
I like the title Nothing to Lose and the upcoming SBS Wed-Thurs certainly has nowhere to go but up with the relative disappointment of currently airing While You Were Sleeping in both the ratings and freshness category. Leads Yeon Woo Jin and Park Eun Bin aren’t the biggest names but the recent dramas with the hyped up stars are ones … Continue reading →
Hit K-drama PD Shin Won Ho keeps making successes out of every day South Korean neighborhood and school life as he did with three Answer Me dramas for tvN in the past five years. Now he’s taking his talents to the prison world, crafting a drama described as light and humorous view of the daily life of prisoners and guards. … Continue reading →
K-ent gather along with the friends and family to accompany Kim Joo Hyuk on his final journey as the actor was laid to rest. While the circumstances of his October 30th car accident remain unanswered, in the end this talented and beloved veteran leading man was still taken from the world much too early and the reasons why ultimately won’t … Continue reading →
I finally figured out the flaw of SBS Wed-Thurs drama While You Were Sleeping, and the reason why ratings aren’t higher and are in fact fading again. The drama’s two flaws are familiarity, both in screenwriter Park Hye Ryun‘s writing style and storyboard, and in how the male lead Lee Jong Seok feels like he’s playing a copied version of … Continue reading →
