A new record got broken from the Korean film contingent attending this year’s 2016 Cannes Film Festival – famed director Park Chan Wook‘s long awaited intense period movie The Handmaiden broke the record set by Bong Joon Ho‘s Snowpiercer as the best selling Korean movie of all time. The Handmaiden was sold to 175 countries over Snowpiercer’s 167, but the more … Continue reading →
It’ll be interesting to see if viewers respond well to MBC drama Lucky Romance and bestow luck on both the drama and the ratings-challenged rom-com genre in general. The drama posters arrived in a splash of yellow themed playful exaggerated fun, with the couple posters featuring leads Hwang Jung Eum and Ryu Jun Yeol in various interactions playing up his reticence … Continue reading →
Hair seems to be the bulk of all commentary around the upcoming K-version adaptation of Chinese romance novel Bu Bu Jing Xin (Startling with Each Step). To be more precise, the hair discussion all revolves around the side-swept eye covering thatch of locks over male lead Lee Jun Ki‘s left eye, a look I think he pulls off even if … Continue reading →
Of the four leads of KBS hit drama Descendants of the Sun, actress Kim Ji Won playing army doctor Yoon Myung Joo was the least well known of the cast. Her popularity has skyrocketed along with the other leads in equal measure hence she’s now been touted for prime time drama leads such as in upcoming KBS sageuk Moonlight Drawn … Continue reading →
The initial fervor and subsequent furor surrounding early 2016 K-drama Cheese in the Trap now feels like water under the bridge. New dramas have come along since, such as the massive hit Descendants of the Sun or the currently buzzy cable drama Another Oh Hye Young, with enough momentum that Cheese outrage has died down naturally. I’m of the mind … Continue reading →
Song Joong Ki‘s China domination continues with the inevitable but totally necessary appearance on top variety show Happy Camp. He’s not the first K-star to hit up Happy Camp in recent years and it’s been a great forum for Hallyu stars to add a different level of exposure. Descendants of the Sun fever and fervor clearly hasn’t dissipated in China … Continue reading →
It’s finally here, or at least the start is finally here for upcoming MBC fantasy sci-fi drama W. It’s gotten a clarification name add to the official title W-Two Worlds, which is two words more to help me write about it going forward since the letter W complicates searching, reading, and writing about this exciting television project. Starring Lee Jong … Continue reading →
Wedding bells are a-ringing soon for star couple Michelle Chen and Chen Xiao, the two famously falling in love in real life after playing iconic reel period couple of Yang Guo and Xiaolongnu in the wuxia novel Return of the Condor Heroes. Their drama version was called Romance of the Condor Heroes 2014 and stands as one of the most … Continue reading →
Filming is underway for fantasy period drama Beauty in the Cupboard (Gui Zhong Mei Ren), with the production releasing exquisite character posters for the dual female leads. Starring Hu Bing Qing and Sebrina Chen, these two younger leading ladies are relative newer faces in the C-drama world. Hu Bing Qing made a splash opposite Yang Yang in last summer’s Tornado … Continue reading →
I recently came across never seen before behind-the-scenes stills from the 2014-2015 K-drama Pinocchio, still one of my favorite K-dramas in recent years, and felt compelled to share for those like-minded folks. These pics feature male lead Lee Jong Seok goofing around with supporting actor Yoon Kyun Sang, with the former remaining super popular even after Pinocchio while the latter … Continue reading →
This coming week is the premiere of Lucky Romance now that Goodbye Mr. Black has bid farewell at last to its revenge schemes. GMB was the ratings leader during the Wed-Thurs time slot after Descendants of the Sun ended, but never passed 10% ratings as far as I recall, so it’s not clear if Lucky Romance can strike it lucky … Continue reading →
Yesterday on May 21st was the wedding day for Ahn Jae Hyun and Gu Hye Sun, with the two doing as stated and getting married in a low key way with the filing of a marriage certificate only. The newlyweds then made a trip to Salvation Hospital in Seoul to donate the money they would have spent on a lavish … Continue reading →
There’s movement on the scheduling front for upcoming fall 2016 dramas. Big budget flower boy driven sageuk Hwarang: The Beginning has been moved from the fall after Uncontrollably Fond to December with a different drama on KBS to bookend the two. It would seem odd to move Hwarang since it’s been filming already and will be done by early summer … Continue reading →
