Four episodes into watching K-drama The King: Eternal Monarch and it’s a steady stream of “buh” and “huh” and “snooze…..” The story may be disjointed but there have been way worse written K-dramas that have worked better thanks to the onscreen romantic chemistry of the leads – not talking about acting ability, just whether the two leads make the viewer believe they are mere seconds away from boning if the camera wasn’t there. The leads of The King don’t just have no chemistry, they might have negative chemistry like two same sided magnets pushing off each other. I thought to make my list of when there has been a stupid/far-fetched,/preposterous/fantasy K-dramas and whether chemistry made it work. This isn’t about a well-written or substantive K-dramas as that can allow the story and directing to keep the interest and carry the day. This is about when everything is actually quite stupid but viewers love it because the leads sell it. Here goes!

Woah momma was I not expecting to see these three people together in any capacity ever again. Gong Yoo, Lee Min Jung, and Suzy was in Japan together this past weekend promoting Big overseas. This crazy roller coaster ride of … Continue reading
Another year, another year end review. For me the year end review contextualizes the dramas watched on three levels – its own merits, how it stacks up against its compatriots, and how the year measures up against previous years. If … Continue reading
I was wondering if I should do this post next month but I know I’ll get too busy with year end work crunch plus the holiday prep not to mention this year I’m traveling again back to Asia the last … Continue reading
When a drama I really loved finishes, I usually need a gradually weaning off of it. Such as rewatching choice scenes, and inevitably posting some more about it until I’m ready to put it to bed. So if you didn’t … Continue reading
I realized in saying that I liked the ending of Big (where Kyung Joon finds his way back to Da Ran as he promised and she believed he would), I didn’t make clear that the execution of the final scene was … Continue reading
I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around the huge chasm between those who love Big and those who hate it. Not that like or dislike could be validated either way, but perhaps one huge reason for why that exists … Continue reading
Big appears to have been a Big Disappointment for many drama viewers, but for me it’s been a Big Pleasure. I loved it, flaws and all, for the entirety of its run. Episode 1 was iffy for me on first … Continue reading
As a whole, episode 15 of Big was infuriating but for the fact that the final 10 minutes brilliantly took this story to a new level poised for an ending that would feel earned for the OTP. This was the episode … Continue reading
I have to be candid and confess episode 15 of Big was so aggravating, that is, until the very end. Then all the aggravation was worth it. I don’t mind getting pulled through the wringer for a pay off. Seeing … Continue reading
The production of Big has pretty much been on lock down for the last week as it films the final two episodes keenly aware that even the littlest news and pictures could let the cat out of the bag as … Continue reading
I’m not sure I like this preview of episode 15 of Big very much. I worry that not much is happening and the story doesn’t have the luxury of dawdling anymore where there are so many issues it needs to … Continue reading
Whether you love, hate, or are indifferent to Big, the drama still stands out as one of the few rom-coms to actually head into the finale week without any clear indicators as to how it’ll end. Will it be bittersweet, … Continue reading
