The first stills are out for currently filming C-drama Precious Youth, and for various reasons this is one of the rare modern C-dramas I’m actually excited to watch. Starring Liu Shi Shi and Zheng Kai, the drama chronicles their friendship and romance spanning 15 years from high school well into adulthood. It sounds less like In Time With You/The Time … Continue reading →
I’m not sure I’ll like upcoming C-variety show Challenger Alliance quite as much as I love the Chinese version of Running Man (Hurry Up Brother), but it’s totally piquing my interest solely on the behind-the-scenes antics of the cast. The show might as well be called the Fan Bing Bing–Li Chen lovefest, what with casting the big name real life … Continue reading →
China may be mostly miss when it comes to producing quality C-dramas, but it has the budget and scope to tackle a wider range of projects, especially when it comes to fantasy stories that require a lot of post-production. Case in point the upcoming special effects laden C-drama Ice Fantasy (Chinese title translates as Fantasy Kingdom), with a big name … Continue reading →
Sometimes a delay ends up yielding unexpectedly good results, and that looks to be the case with the arrival of the drama adaptation of Yun Zhong Ge (Song of the Clouds). The novel from writer Tong Hua is one of my favorites even if it’s also the hardest to read in terms of the angst. It’s probably second only to … Continue reading →
It’s going to be hard to top the collective audience outrage that erupted this week over the ending of the popular summer C-drama Diamond Lover. The drama starring Rain, Tang Yan, and Luo Jin has been doing gangbuster ratings since it premiered in late July, running for over 60 episodes and keeping the local audiences hooked all the way. The … Continue reading →
This is certainly happy news for some people, who I’ll venture to guess are the sliver of drama fans who liked the latest widely panned adaptation of wuxia novel Return of the Condor Heroes. This drama version was called Romance of the Condor Heroes 2014 and starred the perfectly cast C-actor Chen Xiao as the male lead with the near … Continue reading →
This is a project I’ve been expecting Korea to remake, and now the watch is on as rumors have started that popular Chinese novel Silent Separation will for sure be getting a K-drama adaptation. The Chinese market has already adapted to novel twice – the first time into the C-drama My Sunshine with Wallace Chung and Tang Yan, and subsequently … Continue reading →
This might not interest most folks but fans of Yoon Eun Hye will be happy to see her finally back on the small screen. Even if the small screen program she’s on is in China rather than picking a Korean drama, at least she’s doing what she loves in fashion design by joining the five female star line up for … Continue reading →
I want to thank TW-actress/producer Ruby Lin and uber Chinese television host He Joing for giving me the biggest bellyful of laughs in god knows how long. I was doubled over laughing until it hurt, and then promptly got up and clicked play again to experience it all over again. Ruby and He Joing are all over the Mandarin entertainment … Continue reading →
I feel like there are fewer K-dramas nowadays, or maybe it’s just fewer K-dramas that excite me enough to anticipate and later write about. The falling domestic ratings may indicate the K-viewers feel the same way, and it’s hard to fault that sentiment when dramas are packed with PPL to the point of being distracting and the story lines are … Continue reading →
I already like what I’m seeing in the previews for upcoming SETTV Friday night drama, other than male lead Lego Lee’s orange hair updo style and wishing the drama could have a less generic English title. The network and it’s gazillion Love dramas, like Love Forward and Love, Now and Love Around for example, made even more frustrating when some don’t … Continue reading →
Preparations are underway for the second season of popular Chinese fashion competition show The Goddess’s New Outfit. The Chinese title has changed slightly from 女神的新衣 (The Goddess’s New Clothes) to 女神新装 (The Goddess’s New Outfit). The final casting line up of five goddesses includes the sole Korean entertainer in Yoon Eun Hye, Taiwanese model actress Bea Hayden, and three Chinese actresses in Ying … Continue reading →
My wait for Lego Lee to return to the small screen will soon be satisfied when upcoming SETTV Friday night drama Love Cuisine (Chinese title Cuisine High School Student) premieres next week. For starters, this one already looks better than his last drama Aim High by virtue of his leading lady alone – he’s paired up with current drama It … Continue reading →
